Foodstuffs that are bad for horses · 12:20am Jun 24th, 2013

Today we take a break from linguistics to inform you that:

Daffodils is poisonous to horses - they would avoid them in nature and vomit it out if eaten.

Dandelions can also be potentially harmful to horses if not prepared correctly*.
Normal horse feed usually consists of dried grasses and legumes e.g. clover/alfalfa ('hay').

*Due to mycotoxin (mould) commonly growing on the surface of colonizing crops/pioneer species.

I, a human, have eaten dandelions. Both the leaves (sharp flavor, best used in a mixed greens salad to give it a kick) and the flower (tasted like uncooked flour, actually) Didn't get sick, and the leaves were nourishing (lots of vitamin K too)

So if the leaves were cooked, washed, or otherwise prepared correctly, they might still be edible to ponies.

1224087 Well yes, dandelion salad is a delicacy in some part of the world. And since the neurotoxic mould is the culprit and not all dandelion has mould growing on them, they surely can be eaten if prepared correctly. In fact, in some well-managed horse pasture, dandelions are even encouraged and it's said to be beneficial nutritionally.

I don't know why I missed the more obvious one - daffodils; they are truly poisonous whenever it's eaten by a horse due to the lycorine contained therein - if eaten, equines would display symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea - though in nature horses would just avoid them.
