The Tale of Static Rain (Prologue)

    Prologue

Love, desire, power, and greed. These things can and will drive anypony insane if given enough time to take their toll. That’s what I was told. I never listened though; perhaps if I did none of this would have ever happened. I suppose if none of this ever happened, I’d never have figured out what it was like to have friends.

Prologue

Love, desire, power, and greed. These things can and will drive anypony insane if given enough time to take their toll. That’s what I was told. I never listened though; perhaps if I did none of this would have ever happened. I suppose if none of this ever happened, I’d never have figured out what it was like to have friends.
That’s a topic I could ramble on about all day, the whole having or not having friends and family. I never knew my parents as I grew up in a homeless shelter in Fillydelphia, which was eventually shut down and we were sent to another shelter in Canterlot. Growing up in the capital, you’d think the shelter would be well funded, but it was actually quite the opposite. We received enough funding to stay open with only the essentials. The common citizen of Canterlot would trot by the shelter without as much of a thought of those inside or their well being. As government funding was barely given; fundraisers were a monthly event. Most of the time we had races, on which ponies could bet, and we had concession stands where the fillies talented in culinary arts would make what was called by the rich folk of Canterlot: “carnival garbage”. Basically the races and bets were our main source of income. The fact that we were being bet on made much of us feel inferior to other citizens of the city. The adults who volunteered at the shelter always stressed how important it was to try and win the races and make them interesting so as to draw a crowd.
One race ,however, stood out above all the others. We eventually drew a big enough crowd that we got sponsored by some even richer resident of our all so generous capital. This year’s winner of the pegasi portion of the race would have a complete scholarship to the Wonderbolt Junior Academy, where they would be taught advanced flying techniques. That’s not what mattered to me, though. What mattered to me was that it was a ticket out of the shelter and a possible opportunity to start a new life. I didn’t even really give an attempt at the races, just enough to keep the greedy ponies of Canterlot happy. This race however, I had to win, failure was not an option.
My name is Static Rain and here is my story…
