Writing a Fan Fiction is Ruining my Life · 3:28am May 9th, 2013

If this post looks TL;DR, scroll down to the page break; I talk about my fiction.

So, I decided to write a fan fiction. Pretty normal story for a person on this website, of course.

But the problem is, I dislike writing. I always have. It has always taken up to five (or even more) hours to write one page, prompt or no prompt. Didn't matter. I had always felt writing fiction was something for artsy fartsy people who, like successful athletes, had been doing it since they were conceived.

That didn't stop me from readingtheir writing. I've read anything from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes to fifteen hundred page Stephen King novels for breakfast. I was the kid in elementary school who sat on the bench reading the Dragonlance series and the Lord of the Rings (still can't force myself through those for some reason.) I used the excuse, "Don't worry, Mom. It's for school!" so many times, I had to start bringing the assignment sheet to prove the occasional book I actually did have to read.

Anyway, I just wanted to establish I am primarily a consumer of literature, not a producer.

Then I discovered the Magic of Friendship. I'll spare you the details of how I became a brony, because I'm sure you have heard it all before. It didn't take long for my to discover the fan media online, after I started researching the show to try to show its merits to my non-brony friends. (With varying results. Perhaps a later blog?) I quickly discovered Equestria Daily. But, of course, pretty much anyone on the internet even near the topic of ponies without stumbling over that treasure trove. (DISCLAIMER: I AM IN NO WAY INFLUENCED TO ENDORSE EQUESTRIA DAILY. Now let my friends go, Seth.)

Out of the various pony goodness, I discovered pictures and memes parodying the length of the fan fiction Fallout: Equestria. I had never touched fan fiction before because I had never watched or read or experienced any type of media that I wanted to be engrossed in as much as My Little Pony. As my list of unwatched episodes started to dry up, I began looking for other things to fill my pony addiction.

I decided to give Fallout: Equestria a chance. Why not? It had the length and darkness of a good Stephen King novel, a basis on My Little Pony and Fallout, two of my favorite series, and finally, the writing was on par with my favorite writers. I was soon addicted. I read late into the night and during class, hiding it under my papers. I was desperate to get to the next page, the next event, the next chapter. For the span of two weeks, it consumed my life. Frankly, KKat ruined my for other fan fictions. I now regret making that behemoth my first. I've read other good fan fiction, but most of the time I wanted a fan fiction with the the length and prowess of F: E.

That story inspired me; it showed me anyone can write, if they put in the effort.

I didn't start having a real urge to write until I saw Kashiipanda's (sorry if that is spelled wrong) video, Once Upon a Time in Canterlot. After I watched it, I instantly thought, this could be a fan fiction. Instead of looking for a fan fiction I would probably not enjoy, I wondered if I should write one. Fallout: Equestria may have ruined others' fan fiction for me, but could I really not like one I had written?

I started my journey into my first semi-serious writing project, expecting it to be one or two chapters at the most. But as I began to write out the first chapter, I realized I was naturally adding literary devices and tropes, and pretty soon I had the outline of a story at least 5 chapters long, with more surely to come as I got closer to finishing.

I churned out draft of the first chapter in a day, the second in two days. I was consumed by the story. I couldn't stop, constantly worried I would forget some element, or an important event.

Already long story cut off, I know every story worth anything has a good team of editors and inspiration. I have a rough draft of the first chapter typed, another two left to be transcribed.

What I need is someone willing to read and help write a story. Any suggestions, critiques, comments are welcome.

To make collaborating easier, I'm writing the story in Google Docs. If you are interested, Skype me, email me, etc. and I'll try to respond posthaste.

And if you read all of this, thank you.
