Twilight makes a gigantic mistake and she has to become a princess to write new magic that will fix everything, which was probably Celestia's plan for her all along. Why is that racist?
1. I'm not getting rid of it. I'm only revising it. I just think I could have done it a bit better is all.

That's a very good question.
She has to be an alicorn because otherwise she's not powerful enough. Twilight is able to pull off great magical feats (The ursa minor for example) but it wouldn't be enough. Twilight has great magical potential but that's it. Potential. She has lots of raw magical power, which is probably why the plot is happening in the first place, her spell botches and needs to be fixed, but the problem is that she's not skilled enough to control it.
And writing magic sounds hard. It's probably something only the most skilled or most powerful ponies can do. Celestia and Luna can probably write magic but Twilight's probably never done anything like this before.
She might know about writing magic, but that doesn't mean that she's skilled enough to do it herself. That's probably where the 'upgrade' comes in, it'll let her have far more control of her magic than before.
Also: Alicorns don't techincally run all of Equestria. Shining Armors a unicorn, and techincally a prince, and he's captain of the guard and co-ruler of the crystal empire. And Mayor mare is an earth pony and she runs Ponyville.
There's also Blueblood. I can't really say anything about him.
And why wouldn't the Alicorns be the leaders? Celestia and Luna have been around for at least a few millenia. They know a thing or two.
I still stand beside my idea that the change into an alicorn will be temporary and maybe the whole princess thing will be honorary. But that's just my idea.

Also, my problem isn't that Luna and Celestia rule Equestria. They probably earned that position. But for the office of princess to be restricted to Alicorns. That's insane!
Though another thing that bugs me is the whole prince/princess thing. I guess we can assume there is no other rank in Equestria since it's a Principality. Did you know (at least in England) the title of Prince(ss) is basically the default rank for royals? It's basically the lowest title they can have. If you're just a prince, you're quite literally at the bottom. That's why most of them are also Counts, Dukes or the motherfucking Queen! (That's been her new official designation ever since she jumped out of the plane with James Bond.)

It is possible for a unicorn to have that much power but it would be insanely difficult. Alicorns are basically gods, or goddesses as it were, so their magic is probably far above any of the three species. Remember the alicorn amulet; it was insanely powerful, drove its wearer insane, and Twilight could bare stand up to it. That amount of magic in your body probably wouldn't be good for anyone other than a god or goddess, even if your top magic student.
Also royalty titles probably mean something different in pony-world. Celestia and Luna are princesses and look at what they do. And maybe when Cadence took over the crystal empire she became a queen or something.
Of course maybe we're both looking into this way too much and should really just relax.

Okay, I'm gonna stop you right there. First of all, they're not gods, let's get that out of the way. They're not gods for multiple reasons. The big one being, in the context of the show, the Alicorns actually exist.
If Cadance took over the Crystal Empire, she'd be an Empress, not a Queen. Queens rule Kingdoms, not Empires, and it appears the only Kingdom to appear on the show to date was the Changeling Hive.

I briefly forgot the empress thing, thanks. And even if she's still just a princess and SA a prince, they're still the rulers of the empire with full command so you can't say that the title is junk.
I hope my well thought out explanations helped at least.
First of, in my opionion (because different people believe differen't things) alicorns certainly aren't god. Ultra powerful beings yes, but not gods. My definition of god is the being that is all knowing, created the universe and is the highest of all with no match or equal, god simply exsists and will never end (my basic definition) but as I said, differen't people believe different thing, but it still does bug me a little when they are called gods.
second 775017 I agree (with your choice that if you didn't like it to take it down) I have had a few ideas that I might have done but after writing a chapter, I hate it and throw it away keeping the origonal idea in the back of my head, or just rewrite it following the same guide but said much differently . However I didn't actually get around to reading your second "love is in the air" I will have to checkout the new reviosion when it comes out.
third twilight doesn't need to be an alicorn to write spells. Starswirl the bearded did it (mentioned it in the "I forgot which episode it was mentioned in" episode) but yes I do agree that to write spell you would need a vast understanding knowlegde, for example, in order to create a spell I believe you would need vast knowlegde in the thing you were trying to do and figure out how to "weave" you magic in order to manipulate it and the record how to do it on a scroll and such. You don't need to be awesomely powerful, as its not as if your creating it, just figuring out how to do it.
fourth, the reason that they were called princesses I believe is because queens are often seen as a villianous character, and of course, what does every little girl want to be. not a queen. but a princess.
fifth I believe that the alicorns may or may not run equestria, by this I mean they and they don't. I think that they are the almighty ponies that you go to for the most important things were as other small things are left to the small municiple governments, but if they can't handle it, they call upon the princesses for help. obiously the princesses can't run EVERYTHING in eqeustria, they deal with the most important things and leave the rest to others.
sixth, the reason they are making twilight an alicorn, IS TO SELL TOYS. When people have their toys and thats all they need, when they realize that one of their favorites now has wings as well. there kids will want it, and they will probably beg, plead, and pout to get it.
seventh, I'm not even going to bother with cadance and the crystal empire, I have no idea whether she would be the ruler of it, not enough info.
few, that was a few words. well. its full of bad grammer and spelling mistakes. deal with it I'm way to lazy to read it over or paste it into word right now.

The princess thing is true in a real life sense but we're just trying to woke with the canon.
The magic explanation makes sense too and yeah, Alicorn!Twilight is probably just an excuse for more toys and stuff but hopefully the showpeople will make it work somehow. They did it with Cadence.
