Alright. Long, drawn-out story time guys.
So, this is about all the hubbub surrounding an Alicorn Twilight. It's been confirmed that she will acquire wings, with a horn (as if you haven't heard all of this before), which is simply what an Alicorn is. Now, to go way back, way before season 3 was premiered. Through my days, I saw many Alicorn versions of various ponies. I scoffed at these, declaring them ridiculous. I felt that the idea of an Alicorn that was not a Princess was foolish, and would never be canon. When season 3 was out and churning along with it's episodes, I started hearing rumors. And the first episode helped substantiate these claims to an alarming degree. I was scared witless. "It was irrational." I assured myself. Though I was shrouded in doubt. This has been going on, and today, it was announced almost directly. There is no turning back from it. It is true. To what extent, that is only guesswork.
I've had mixed feelings about it, but then I saw a picture. It was actually from a tumblr. But it hit me, and it hit me slam in the face full. It bit my heart in a way only something that I've been too foolish to understand could. That even though Twilight Sparkle, the most dearest of characters to me, will become an Alicorn, she would still be Twilight Sparkle. That having extra limbs won't change who she is. And I saw this, and I felt sad. Sad because I couldn't realize this truth earlier. That it was such an obvious thing, I hadn't noticed it. Now that I've realized this, I feel sorry. Well, long story short (too long, I know) I have accepted this. The MLP team has been creating wonderful, phenomenal works of animation, so why should it change for one thing? Why would it be any different? Why shouldn't it make it even more fantastic? Well, this is done. Keep your face upward, and onward to more fronts! ~A Stupid Long-Post Fellstar

I personally think that an Alicorn Twilight Sparkle is fine. To be honest, I can't say I'm too surprised. You need to look at the story of the show since season one first aired. We always knew she was Celestia's favourite (assuming she has any others) student, perhaps even what you might call an apprentice.
Twilight has always had access to the head of state that so many a pony could dream of. That alone should be a fairly reliable clue. There are only so many reasons why an otherwise normal citizen of Equestria would have such access.
Look at the Elements of Harmony. Twilight has a crown. Hmm. That's another clue, I believe. Who else in the show wears a crown, I wonder?
How many times has she saved Equestria? A lot! In my opinion, that would eventually lead to an elevation in her status in pony society. They owe her so much.
But anyway, enough of my cryptic beliefs. You need to always look at it this way. She gets some wings. She gets some wings. You say that to yourself for a while and the idea loses its shock factor. As you say, they're just extra limbs. It won't change the most important thing about her. That thing? Her soul. I mean, Look at Rarity. She has had wings before. Did it change her personality? No. She just showed off, like she always has. (Not hating on Rarity here, she's one of my favourites, partly because of that very characteristic)
Look on the brightside. If she becomes Alicorn, I'm sure her magic will mature. Plus, she has wings. Perhaps we'll get to see more of Equestria because of this!
On another note, when Twilight becomes Alicorn, I'm hopeful that might help combat the taboo against Alicorn OCs. A taboo that I just can't understand the existence of. Does many a brony think that Alicorn OCs are only OK if it's made by a certain Lauren Faust? Probably, which makes me sad. If somepony wants to make an Alicorn OC, then why shouldn't they? You've already demonstrated that it's not bad to do this with Atla. Besides, Alicorns the reserve of royal blood? I doubt it. I remember in one episode there was a random background Filly that was an Alicorn.
