NYY Judge Roberto Clemente Award Winner · 11:26am Oct 31st, 2023

Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees, a "right-handed big gun" representing the team and the league, won the Roberto Clemente Award in 2023.

The Major League Baseball (MLB) Secretariat held the Roberto Clemente Award ceremony ahead of Game 3 of the 2023 Major League World Series Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix, Arizona, on the 31st. It is the fourth time that he has won the Roberto Clemente Award as a Yankees player since Ron Guidry in 1984, Don Baylor in 1985 and Derek Jeter in 2009.

The Roberto Clemente Award is awarded by the Major League Secretariat and is given to players who have raised Major League Baseball's honor by conducting various charitable services to the community as well as exemplary behavior.

The reason why the name, which was the "Commissioner Award" when it was established in 1971, was changed shortly afterwards is because of what happened in December of the following year. Roberto Clemente, a "strong hitter," was killed in a plane crash while carrying relief to help Nicaragua, where the earthquake occurred, and the secretariat renamed the award to Clemente's name in his honor.

Judge, who was selected as this year's winner, founded the "All-Rise Foundation" in 2018, helped young people in the Broncos area of New York, and also volunteered in his hometown of Fresno County, California.

According to the Major League Baseball's official website MLB.com , New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, "It's very important for him to do charity work. "I've seen many players win the award over the years, and the winners will say that the Roberto Clemente Award is the most meaningful award in their careers," he congratulated Judge.

Meanwhile, Judge hit 62 home runs last year, breaking Roger Maris' record for the most home runs in an American League (AL) single season in 1961, and signed a nine-year contract worth $360 million with the Yankees after the end of the season. This season, he suffered ups and downs from toe injuries, but he played with a batting average of 0.267 37 home runs and 75 RBIs OPS 1.019 in 106 games and 367 at-bats.
