Greetings, folks! This is Mr. J back with another movie review for today! This afternoon, I will be reviewing the second installment of the Fast & Furious franchise entitled: “2 Fast 2 Furious” from 2003. I’ll be honest with you all…I found this movie to be a bit underwhelming, to say the least. It felt like the story went nowhere during a huge chunk of the film while throwing in street racing here and there. The character writing felt weak, and the basic premise could have been more interesting. I still liked the action scenes whether it involved fight choreography or street racing.

In this movie, Brian O’Connor and Roman Pierce go undercover for the United States Customs Service and the FBI to foil the schemes of the notorious drug lord Carter Verone in exchange for their criminal records to be wiped clean.

Let me just start with some positives: first off, the action, the choreography, and the acting were pretty good. I may not be a car racing fanboy, but at least I can appreciate the entertainment value in it. Aaaaaaaannnd…yeah, that’s pretty much it. There are a lot of things I just didn’t like about the movie which kept me from entirely enjoying it. You know how people say that you should turn your brain off so you can enjoy dumb fun movies? Well…it’s kinda hard to do that when you’re bored.

This felt like it was a minor rehash of the first movie—same plot, same conflict except we’re facing a drug lord and meeting up with a new guy to replace Dom, apparently. Speaking of whom, where is Dominic? Why isn’t he in the movie? Are we not gonna follow up on the ending of the last film? And I really wasn’t impressed with the dynamic Brian and Roman had. It felt underdeveloped and unconvincing overall due to the shallow writing and boring plot.

Tyrese Gibson did a really good job acting, but I am not a fan of his character.

Carter Verone was incredibly generic as a villain. His motivations suck, his “ruthlessness” felt forced, and he was rather more irritating than anything. Hey, look! There’s a bland cardboard antagonist threatening our heroes! Oh no! Whatever shall we do?! If this is what this franchise keeps aiming at, then I begin to hesitate ever continuing this franchise.

Once again, as seen in the previous movie, there is no proper character growth, the characters pretty much stay the same until the end, the story is weak, and the resolution felt rushed and underwhelming as ever. I don’t know how they did this, but they actually managed to make this even less tolerable than the first one. How am I supposed to care for these guys if the writers don’t do anything unique with them? Maybe I’m the only one who feels this way, but this movie just bored me out of my mind.

This gets a 4/10. This is not a bad movie per se, but it definitely could have been so much better than what it is now. Like I said, it had solid acting, choreography, and action sequences, but everything else sucks ass. This is just my honest opinion, and if you like it or love it, good for you! That’s all I have for this below-average sequel.

Peace!
