Just when you think you are starting to solve one problem, a few more take up their place.
And so, Pike begins to realize what, honestly, too many fail to realize.
A beta is not someone who couldn't cut it as an alpha; just as an alpha is the captain, a beta is the alpha's lieutenant. The alpha gives directions and makes the broad strokes outline of what is going to happen, and the beta fills in the details so that it does happen.
Pike proposed the schedule and outlined how it would work, and Cut added the details to make sure it could work. Patton was a helluva general, but that wouldn't have mattered one bit if he hadn't been backed up by equally competent majors, and them by their captains, and them by their lieutenants; no single person wins a war.
In the future, read a book. Way less suspicious.
Pike's mind just exploded a little, I think.
Aaaaaand the cracks have finally begun to give way.
Realizing that someone you were supposed to be able to trust has been giving you horrific advice the whole time isn't an easy thing. It's a slow process, and often a very painful one, since you end up blaming yourself as much as the person who led you astray ("I can't believe I was so stupid").
Necessary part of getting better though. Pike's finally made it to the starting line.

also the whole idea of alpha/beta/whatever is total BUNK. Not even wolves actually do that shit, packs are just wolves that are directly related and don't have set roles like that
11099942
And we're talking about a sapient race of cartoon equines with a completely made up culture with completely made up social expectations and standards.
11099898
Depends on who writes the book. And what theories they spout.
11099953
it's more like the same nonsense it is here. I'm more responding to the guys comment that alphas and betas have "roles' which implies they are things that "Exist".
I'm not making any commentary on the culture of the ponies in your story. Just explaining that it's a social concept that isn't based on anything in nature
11099954
12 rules for life, for example? Leave the herd immediately
edit: would it be like, jordan ponyson?
edit edit: warden ponyson

Please do not engage in politically charged pontificating in the comments section.
11099991
I wasn't aware me thinking a book was bad is "politically charged"
and the pontificating was solely on what his pony name would be
Nice
11100013
It's a slippery slope. Best to avoid it entirely for everyone's sake.
You missed one.
Double what
11100049
Fixed. Thanks!
11099971
You and I disagree on this. In the interest of the author's wishes, let's leave it at that.
11100092
I am going to leave it at that, however I'm not just stating my opinion but the scientific consensus which informs my opinion.
Instead of trivializing polyamory, you do a good job of exploring how emotionally taxing it can be to have to manage several partners at once.
Anon's monogamous tendencies and his natural instinct to feel like he has to be the "man of the house" would naturally create tension in a society where he is meant to be the housewife, and I thank you for exploring that.
It's all stupid, Pike... become your own mare!
Yeah, being right about something being wrong rarely feels like a good thing
No you didn't, your previous statement was more accurate, you did exactly what Star Mapper would do not what an Alpha is supposed to do.
Granted you grew up thinking of her as the perfect example of an Alpha and believed she handled everything as it should handled.
So I can't really blame you for thinking everything was over and done with after the "fit" was over, even if you never really dealt with the root of the issue
Yeah, Cut and Anon need to get better at reading your body language
Nailed it
Nah, you just didn't deal with the core of the issue, and if you learned how to deal with situations like this from Star Mapper then I hope the other members of her herd were better at helping your Dad after his "fits"
I think this is an epiphany moment?
I feel like this is an epiphany moment
Thus, the cracks grow larger. (They started when she realized seeing her Mom always stressed her the fuck out and how easy it would be to lose her approval and gain her contempt.)
Relatedly, it’s almost as if being a “marely mare” to the point of being a walking stereotype is and unhealthy way to live, since, ironically, your sense of maresculinity is extremely fragile because you hold yourself to an impossible, and completely arbitrary, standard. Along with this, since most of all of your self-worth as well as many aspects of your life revolve around your sense of maresculinity, even a very minor slight against it gets a big reaction, since it’s interpreted as an attack on your worth, lifestyle, etc.
In other words, a shitty, shallow, arbitrary, and heavily misguided outlook on what’s important in life and what makes a person worth admiring or respecting makes for a rather shitty, shallow, arbitrary personality.
As much fun as the competition was to read in the Greentext, and acknowledging that Pike needs to navigate several more
questsevents before she can realistically have her big epiphany and/or major showdown with her mom, I really can’t wait for the verbal (if not at least somewhat physical) smackdown about how shitty she is, and has been, as a parent, spouse, herdmate, and person.11100238
My, your second and third paragraphs suuuuure sound familiar.
*Almost the entirety of Facebook and twitter*
Yeah, makes sense to me.
11099942
11099953
Also, ironically, herd animals like horses, or at least horses alone, tend to actually have a matriarch.
Interestingly Zebra don't though. They're more like cats in that they gather for safety but don't have a collective purpose beyond that.
Unrelatedly that Gods Don't Bleed moment that Pike had was a bit abrupt. I'd far more expect it to be far more reasonable for her to not extend that loss of legitimacy to all of her mothers other advice and whatnot until she found herself thinking about it.
Learn and grow, my ponies! Learn and grow.

Don’t have either of those, so I’ll have to take your word for it.
11100610
Lucky for you. Its full of morons and the easily fooled, as well as those with fragile egos.
Pike begins realizing her mom might, just maybe, be a piece of manure herself.
I personally would like to see Pike spend some time with her dad.
Pike needs to realize that her mom is an actual idiot who’s not worth being taken seriously, or her life will be very miserable which will also affect her loved ones.
At least Pike is contemplative enough not to hold a Double Standard and realize if that attitude is bad for Anon it might be bad for her as well.
YES! Pike you sweet little fluffball! You finally understand! Your mother is an idiot, and full of shit!
11100238
Ohhhh I hope Pike gets to verbally DECIMATE her mother.
11102154
Eh.... I'm sure Pike's mother is doing her best, as best she knows how. The path to hell is paved with good intentions, and all that. I'm always reluctant to assume maliciousness where simple ignorance could explain matters instead.
There's a lot to be said for stoicism, confronting problems directly, and being tough. It's just that, yeah. When all you (emotionally) have is a hammer...
In a broader sense, I think that's one of the great revelations of adulthood, really. When you're a kid, you think your parents know everything. When you're a teenager, you realize just how flawed they truly are. And when you become an adult, you realize that they are absolutely still that flawed, but were doing the best they could.
11103132
While you do have some points. Her mother is world reknowned as a stallionizer or something like that. Mareliest of mares. And all that comes with it.
11105630
so i didn't misread that
Anyone else checking on this like Pinkie with the mailbox? 📭📪
11106769
Yes, I am basically addicted to this story. It's awsome.
11099897
Or at Pike would be more familiar with, A Sergeant to her Lieutenant.
Knock knock. Reality here. Just checking in.
Ah the wonders of a house trying to be run by all men (or at least, people trying to behave as stereotypical own men).
And there’s your problem, Pikey dear.
