Just English should do you well for the first couple of months, but after that I think you'll have managed to pick up enough for day-to-day interaction. Depending on the service you pick, plane ticket shouldn't cost you more than 100 Euros, and I will somehow get my mum to agree letting you use the couch until you find yourself a place. She will very likely ask you to pay rent, so you might want to start doing commissions. Do tell when you will be coming so I know how much time I have to convince her.
