Student and Teacher, Servant and Mistress, Citizen and Ruler, Friend and...Lover?

Twilight ran.
It started as a dignified trot, head high, chin up, purposeful steps. By the first turn she could barely see for the tears in her eyes. It was the first sob that broke the levee. All sense of poise washed away in the flood of emotions that followed.
When the clatter of racing hooves reached her ear, she knew she'd not be able to out run them.
Twilight blinked.

A flash of golden light filled the Books and Branches library, only for a more stable glow to replace it a second later.
Celestia took in the ancient tree's interior with red, puffy eyes. It was empty save for the books that called it home. "Twilight?" she rasped, her voice too weak to produce an echo. She moved deeper into the building, climbing the stairs toward Twilight's room, calling out for her ever other step. The creak of floorboards the only reply.
It was a small door that led into Twilight's bedroom, designed as it was for normal ponies. It was wood and paint, and thin besides. Yet, it may as well have been the gates of Tartarus for all that Celestia could make herself open it.
She rested her head against the rough surface and sighed. "Twilight? Please speak to me."
Any pony else would have missed the faint sob that came from the other side, but to Celestia's ears it was as loud as a Sonic Rainboom. She waited until the silence became too much to bear.
"I-- I'm sorry," she began, uncertain if her voice was even penetrating the door. "I know there is nothing that I can say to make this right. I know that... I know you hate me right now. And you should. I won't make any excuses. You deserve so much better than that. Just... I need to know that you will be alright." She drew a shaky breath. "I've sent for your parents and the girls, but until they arrive, I can't let you be alone right now. Please talk to me... say something. Yell at me. Anything so that I know you are there."
Celestia fell with the silence, crumpling to the floor like a paper doll under its own weight.
"How long?"
Celestia stared at the thin gap between the floor and door. "It's not that si--"
"I asked how long!"
She sighed. "Six months."
"Six months!" The door shook as Twilight's hoof slammed against it, and Celestia flinched. "I can't believe you! I trusted you!"
"I know."
"I gave you my heart!"
"I know."
"And you betrayed me!"
Celestia stared at the gap and nodded, even though she knew Twilight couldn't see her. "I'm sorry."
"How?" Twilight finally asked, the anger ebbing from her voice. A dull thump sounding from her side of the door. "How could you do this to me?"
"It started..." Celestia dug her hoof into the floor. "It started at the garden party. Just... friends. You know we started spending time together after that. It... it just grew from there. We didn't--"
"Good intentions," Twilight said, her voice dull and lifeless.
Celestia nodded again. "I don't expect you to forgive me. I don't deserve it."
"Why her?" Celestia closed her eyes, hoping that she would let it go. The door shook again. "Why her Princess? WHY HER!"
"That's why," she whispered before she could stop herself. Celestia cringed, hoping that she had gone unheard.
"What?"
Celestia closed her eyes, trying to hold back the tears. "I... I tried Twilight. I tried so hard. I wanted it to be you. You're everything I... But you... I couldn't..." She swallowed back the lump in her throat. "Do you know what she calls me when we are alone? Sunbutt. She calls me Sunbutt, Twilight. Luna is not so at ease in my presence. You... you still don't see me, Twilight. Even after... when you look into my eyes. You are looking for approval. I can't be your mentor and your lover, Twilight. None of that excuses what I've done, and if you are never able to forgive me, I understand." The creak of old hinges pulled at Celestia's ear. "Your friends are here. I should go." Her horn began to glow. "I am so sorry for what I have done to you. I... I will always love you... my faithful student."
A flash of sunlight filled the library.

You think you can just go back Celestia? Not likely. Your lover sounds extremely self absorbed to me. She's not relaxed around you, she's so in her own little world she can't grasp that other things are important
why celestia you little bitch.
this needs a continuation as well.
Interesting: Celestia says "I can't be your mentor and your lover" but at the end she calls Twilight "my faithful student". Maybe it's not just Twilight that can't let go of their old teacher-pupil relationship. Either that, or she just chose for Twilight.
Celestia is being extremely selfish here. Not only does she blames Twilight for HER cheating, she also doesn't even have the decency to actually stay and at least comfort her. Instead, she decides to just run away and in hope that it'll just disappear. She just throws Twilight's friends at her and hopes they'll do the job.
She basically says that Twilight's to blame because the poor mare looks up to her as a mentor. Yet, as pointed out by the LastBrunnenG, she is the one who uses Twilight's old title. The relationship was obviously consensual, so why did Celestia even bother if she knew that Twilight worshiped the ground she walked on? Wouldn't it have been better off to refuse her in the first place if Celestia knew this and avoid shattering Twilight's trust. Celestia does not deserve pity for this. She has just potentially ruined the life of a mare who utterly believed in her.
Also, did Celestia really just break off the relationship at the end? She didn't even let Twilight choose?
What a bitch.
I'm really interested in seeing a follow up to this.
I really like this one. I can totally picture Twilight not being able to handle treating Celestia as an equal.

I wouldn't say she blames Twilight, but that does not mean that Twilight does not share in the blame. Yes, Celestia's actions were wrong. She is very clear about admitting that.
As for leaving, she feels that, at that moment, her presence would not help. They need distance and time before they speak again.
In a healthy relationship, both parties must see each other as equals. Perhaps Celestia allowed herself to be blind to Twilight's continued worship when they first started out, perhaps she thought Twilight would grow to see herself as an equal, perhaps it only became obvious once they were together, or perhaps you are right and Celestia is an emotionally manipulative bitch who has no issue breaking the heart of the mare who gave brought her sister back...
4431598 Why should she let Twilight choose? Had she not found somepony else, sure, but now there is a third pony who has just as much stake in the outcome as them. Giving Twilight any hope would only cause more pain.

I knew going into this that you guys wouldn't be big fans... I mean, Twilestia break-up fic with a cheating Celestia? That's just asking for hate. The big thing to remember is that sometimes, people make mistakes, and those mistakes hurt the people closest to them. That does not make them bad people, it makes them people.

if that's Celestia's attitude then she has no right to pursue, very little right to explain and no right to redefine their relationship. She can say Twilight's no longer her lover, but not that they're returning to a mentor student relationship.
I've never been a big fan of platitudes. Honestly, it's not like I'm going to hold this against other versions of Celestia but I see no reason to forgive this one
I feel like I'm about to go against the grain and say I understand Celestia and her actions. I don't condone the cheating, that's wrong when a relationship isn't what you need and your no longer able to be yourself, its time to end it. Masks are for the outside world, never a lover.
This clearly states she wasn't happy, while it is no reason to cheat it a reason to break off the relationship like she did at the end. She should done it sooner. Giving Twilight a chance wasn't a option because Celestia already knew what she wanted, but was too afraid to make the right decision before she cheated.
The feels!
To be frank, I see this biting Celestia in the flank. No, not just in the obvious ways (such as how Twilight's friends and family are going to react including Cadence and Luna), not to mention the public fallout once it gets known, but also in that the mare that Celestia was with went into it knowing that Celestia was already in a relationship. That says to me that the mare doesn't care at all about that sort of stuff.
So Celestia better be prepared because that sort of attitude leads to the cheater being cheated on... And when it happens, unlike Twilight, she won't get any sympathy for it whatsoever and probably told that she deserved it.

exactly the kind of thing I was thinking
I can't tell, did Celestia try telling Twilight about this problem before to try and work through it or is Twilight hearing about it for the first time? That is going to be a big factor in how mad I am at Celestia in this.
4432596
So it's Twilight's fault she's doing something wrong that Celestia never made any effort to bring up or work out with her?
Sounds like a big croc o' victim blaming to me.
Aww hell naw. Unless Tia lied about her being in a relationship, this cheating partner's only stake in the outcome is how not to be even more damaging to the relations between these two than she already was and try to support her lover's decisions. They have zero right to complain about whatever happens because they were the catalyst for the conflict (relationship troubles are not grounds for cheating).
If Celestia simply lied to her about being in a relationship, that changes things (adds an innocent third party), though it means ideally neither mare would have anything to do with her in the future in any way, shape or form.
4434943 If she wasn't able to separate her lover from her teacher and mentor its already a problem. Although Celestia is wrong I think the blame here is mixed to both parties. Wanting a relationship of a romance sense and having that come from a already established relationship of teacher/student and one having one person in that relationship blending the two separate connections instead of changing the relationship is means to try to fix it or end it.
4437217
not every relationship, even if it is between equals will be between equals Celestia has a great deal of life experience and has done things Twilight never will. Celestia may want to be just another pony, but the fact her own sister can't relax as fully as she would like around her, says to me it's Celestia who's relationship expectations are messed up
Nice! I love this, not so happy take.
Oh, and who's the mare? Flur? AJ ? Chrysalis? Pinkie? Or Rarity, she's been chasing royal flank for years...
4431466 I agree. Celestia is a bit of a coward in this one, not to mention a cheating bitch.
This.... actually makes a scary amount of sense...
4434641 Do you really think Twilight would do that to her? She may have been hurt deeply, her heart shattered, her soul scarred, but.... I dont think she'd abandoon Celestia like that. She'd still come to her aid, trying her best to help her through it... and probablly crush Celestia even more with that once she realises what she haas lost with Twilight. I agree that a relationship between the two could never work in this scenario, but if celestia DOES end up getting cheated on as well, both her and twilight will end up having their hearts shattered like thin ice.
4433384 i know this is responding to an old post but youve got to look at it with more than just that in mind as there are more than 1 option
1 what you stated
2 she could have talked to twilight about it maybe fixed it before barring that failing breaking off the relationship
