    Happy Holidays

This is your yearly reminder that I wrote a decently funny Christmas story in the long-ago times. If you haven't read it, you should! If you have read it, maybe you should just stick with blurred memories of how good it was.

    Books!

So, due to my high level connections here and there, I now have an advance copy of several highly sought after ponyfic books. Now that I've had a chance to check several of them out in person, I have to say that Ponyfeather Publishing does excellent work. Anyone able to pick one up, at Bronycon or ordering them afterward, should totally do so.

So, I've actually been posting on my primary blog lately. Which has been nice, given that I've pulled myself out of depression enough to actually do stuff like that. So, here's been my daily content over there:

Big Ultra Master Review List · 6:11am Jun 7th, 2014

This is THE BIG MASTER REVIEW LIST, AKA: the huge list of pony fan fiction reviews.

100+ people & groups covering over 10,000 stories by almost 4,000 authors.

Adding up to over 20,000+ reviews all together.

Currently not updating at the moment, I have wandered on to other things. However, I plan to keep it up for as long as I can.

Please, please, please. If you find a wrong link or see that I've got the wrong source/name for a review please tell me. I want this to be as accurate as possible but with twenty thousand reviews I'm going to make the occasional mistake.

If you want to see how reviewed a story is, or what various people think about it, check it out. It's a huge list so using the find function is recommended unless you just want to wander through it. All authors and titles are copied/pasted straight off of FimFiction (or other source) and it likes exact matches for punctuation and the like. Does take partials, so doing just one word of a name or title works pretty good.

If you are an author who is wondering about if there are reviews for their stories I'll be happy to navigate the sheet for you. Especially if you want to check if there are any new reviews or anything. Just pop a comment on this post and I'll be happy to fetch the info from the list for you. Just don't expect a instant turnaround for it.

In addition, if you know someone who has done even just a handful of pony fan fiction reviews that you enjoy, point me at them and they shall get added to the list. Single person reviews, group-based reviews, non-fimfiction blogs, all are accepted. I am inching toward adding video reviews to the list. So if you know any reviewers who do audio/visual formats, let me know so I can start compiling that information to see how big a challenge it will be. (Spoiler: It's a huge challenge and will not be added anytime soon, but I still want to know about any video reviewers out there so I can bookmark them in case things change)

Reviews of mature stories are included, if the title isn't too explicit, but any warning about mature stories/subjects are the responsibility of the reviewers. The Big Master Review List does not link directly to any stories. So if you do find a link to a story please tell me, since I sometimes copy/paste the wrong url when adding links.

See below the break for even more amazing state-of-the-art features!

Over the years (holy princesses, has it really been years plural?) I've made modifications and additions to THE MASTER LIST. It is all contained in one spreadsheet, but I've been forced to spread some of the side information over several pages. The pages can be gotten to by clicking the tabs on the bottom of your browser window when looking at any page of the spreadsheet. Also keep in mind that (assuming everything is working) that any of the columns can be sorted by right-clicking on them and picking Sort Sheet A-Z (or similar). Which can help if you want to see all the reviews of a certain reviewer, want to sort the stories by title instead of author, or even more helpful fiddle around with the statistics on different pages.

The first page is the list itself, which is simply a list of links to reviews. Stories down the left side with reviewers along the top. I hope it is all pretty self-explanatory. The numbers on the second row are the totals for each column. Number of authors, number of stories, then number of reviews for each review source.

The second page is links to reviews of short story collections/anthologies. Since several reviewers like to review chapters of story collections individually. The links for those collections on the Big Master Review List primary page also directs people here.

Currently part of THE MASTER LIST:

Now for our dramatis personae (major players with more than 100 reviews on the list)
City Of Doors (me!)

Here are the reviewers in the under 100 sections at the far right of the list. The reviewers found here might have done one review, a dozen reviews, even 95 reviews. They might have just started to have been inactive for several years. The only qualification for this category is being on the list with less than 100 reviews.

That list is mega-cool, I can't believe you keep track of all that! It's really interesting to see what stories get more than one review.

Oh, and since you asked for more reviewers, you should definitely start including John Perry's featured box reviews. TSG also does reviews, but his are a little more scattered and harder to really quantify (he does updates on things he's reading, so actual reviews of finished stories are harder to come by).

2183344

I'll see what I can do. Featured Box Reviews seems simple enough, he's only got like a hundred or so blogposts to go through. TSG might be a little trickier so that'll be left until after my trip methinks.

I found this list the other day, amazing stuff, can't imagine how long it took to compile!

2184431

Well, I do it pretty much by hand. So basically, it took all of the time.

Just want to say, this is a really cool project you've taken on. I found several reviews of my stories I had no clue existed. (Also, glad that you enjoyed my stuff!)

Oh wow, I'm included in this. Cool!

2422123

Yep! Got you a while ago. Trying to get everyone, at least for now.

This is the coolest thing ever. Thanks!

Holy crap, look at this.

Edit: Hey, you're the CityOfDoors guy! Small world.

2627868
It's a post on a blog consisting of text and hyper-links, but that's not important right now.

I'm not sure if you'd be interested, but I've done reviews of 13 stories so far:

Lumino Zero's Subconscious Desires

Ardenfax's Under the Aurora

The Fires of Friendship

And two sets of five reviews:

Here's one

Her Blood Ran in Hollows of the Floor by HoofBitingActionOverload
Cards Against Equiniti by Door Matt
Bitter Harvest by Else Ynopemos
Words Failed Her by Nonsanity
Little Apple by Oroboro

Here's the other

A Confederacy of Dunce Caps by Estee
Going Anywhere by Eakin
On the Importance of Spelling by Softy8088
Awaken, Scootaloo by xjuggernautx
Fugue State by Horizon

I'm not sure if you'd be interested in including me on ZE MASTER LIST or not, but I'm planning on doing more (I actually have four more that I haven't posted yet) so... yeah.

I've also done some reviews of the write-off entries, which is... a ton of stories.

2628014
That's certainly enough reviews to get you added. Will probably take me a while, I'm taking a break for a day or so.

2629032
Fair enough!

I ended up reviewing five more stories today anyway:

In Her Majesty’s Royal Service by Sagebrush
Clash of the Heavenly Titans by Ciroton
Celestia and Luna Drive a Car by BronyWriter
Waiting For Celestia by Bronetheus
Moonlight Palaver by Carabas

2629534
Thanks for the links. Now that searching through blogs is slightly more difficult, it is much appreciated.

2630364
So what's the best way of keeping things up to date? Should I send you a PM or a message or whatever with links when I make a new review post?

2630474
Nah, I just follow you and when you put up a new review post I add 'em in. Just getting the ones already up and in the blog gets a bit annoying sometimes.

2630484
Makes sense. Easy enough.

Ohhh, this is a really interesting concept and, very impressive work

Not sure how interested you are in more reveiw but, been trying to get some done.

Have about ten on my blog here.

Only the latest three are up on Fimfiction.

A Bad Day for Grumpy Goat. by: de Writer
Fluttershy's Bad Hare Day. by: Pegasus Rescue Brigade
and
A Delicate Balance. by: Japanese Teeth

Also did

This rather massive chapter by chapter review/analysis of Fallout Equestria.

2633671
Cool. Thanks for letting me know.

Thanks for adding accidents to your list. You going to review it?

2653060
Probably not. My current to-read backlog is quite large and it didn't catch my attention enough to jump the line. Plus it sounds a bit too depressing for my current mood. Big master list is for stories that have reviews from anyone, or at least the three dozen or so reviewers I'm keeping track of.

Finding out that more reviews for my work exist than I was aware of is pretty high up there on the list of good feelings. Thank you for the effort you're putting into this—I can picture myself referring back to it a lot. Also thanks personally for the review I see you did on the one fic of mine.

The menu bar isn't visible. Is that deliberate? If so, how (& why) did you hide it? I want to make a copy so that I can resize the columns.

It also doesn't allow me to download a copy.

2659943
Um, it is visible for me. Lemme see what I can do. Which columns are you resizing? I keep going back and forth on how big some of them should be.

2659943
Hmmm. No clue on the menu bar. Seems like it might be something on your end? A bit of research suggests trying CTRL + SHIFT + F.
As for downloading, should work. What browser are you using?

Nevermind, I figured it out. Let me know if you are still having trouble.

2659943 I see I just have to remove the 'pubhtml' from the end of the link.

For me, if I just make a local copy of the spreadsheet, I can scroll through it much, much faster. Possibly because so many other people are reading the original at the same time.

It would be easier to read if you did a global search-and-replace of '--- ', ' ---', and 'The ' with '', abbreviated some of the names, and then resized the columns to be as narrow as possible.

2659968
Yeah, Google gave me the more restricted link before I figured out the better one and just forgot to update the link above.

2659968
Understandable. Just remember to get the updated version every now and then. Is a constant work in progress. Plus I'm probably going to do a update by the end of the week where the leftmost 4-5 columns are smooshed together into one 'misc'.

I want to keep the titles and authors as they are on the fimfiction pages for easy searching. As for the '---' those are left over from a previous version and I probably should change them, but the find-and-replace feature apparently doesn't work text with link. So as far as I can tell I'd have to change the 5000+ link entries by hand. I probably should narrow up the title column at the very least.

2660029

the find-and-replace feature apparently doesn't work text with link.

Enter find-and-replace, and check the box that says to search formula contents.

When you want to search-and-replace a string with quotes, check regular expression, and put a . instead of the '.

2660069
Like magic, it works! Thanks for the help.

Have you been to /fic/, man? All we did there was story reviews. Man, I miss those days. Shame Dem axed the old spreadsheet; there was a lot of knowledge in those reviews.

2687717
Sadly, I don't tend to hang out at those places. Shame that you lost the spreadsheet for them.

2688523
well, the spreadsheet was simply for convenience. it didn't contain the actual reviews. rather, it just linked to the post containing them, but it was very organized and made it super easy to find them, much like yours.
If you're interested, you can just follow the back links in the Training Grounds thread OPs and manually find each and every review. They currently still exist as far back as Feb 2012

2688575

Hmm... It'll go into the 'maybe' pile. That's a lot of work and this is a hobby of someone who is somewhat lazy (me). Thanks for pointing me to it though.

Thanks for adding my fic to your li- whoa, that's one hell of a review compilation! :rainbowderp:

I am unsure of how this all works though. I've just read the blog post that stated my story had been 'cut' (I honestly had no idea it was being considered for a review), and I'm somewhat confused as to how it has ended up on the list if such is the case.

I'm not complaining, since the review - although not favourable from my perspective - is pretty damn accurate; I'm just confused. Any clarification you could provide would be much appreciated.

2700020
In general, my definition of 'review' is that someone who read the story had an opinion of it. xTSGx's stuff is always a bit hard, since he doesn't really do reviews he simply talks about what he's been reading. Which also makes linking to stuff he talks about hard sometimes. In that particular case, I believe he is merely saying that he stopped reading it because he didn't like it. He merely talks about if he is continuing to follow a story or not.

Opinions of reviewers linked on the big master list are not necessarily the opinions of the person maintaining the list. Except, you know, mostly of the links to the reviews I did myself.

Thank you so much for adding my story to your list!

2700111
Ah, I see, thanks for clearing that up for me. The 'cut' part made me assume it was no longer eligible for the list for some reason. :twilightblush:

2700281
Nope, I just stalk them. None of the reviewers have anything to do with the list. I just find them and link their posts.

2702778
Well, 35+ people over two years can read a lot of fanfiction

Thanks for adding my fic to the list! I had no idea it had been reviewed anywhere so this was helpful :pinkiehappy:

VGI

Thanks for adding me!

Thanks for adding me to that list, sure is nice of you to put forward the effort to do all this. That is a spreadsheet that probably makes IBM engineers wet themselves.

Thanks for adding my fic to your super-awesome-splenderific-humongous-big ol' list you got there! I'm very honored to have it included.

That list... wow... Impressive.

In addition, if you know someone who has done even just a handful of pony fan fiction reviews that you enjoy, point me at them and they shall get added to the list.

It feels uncomfortably like flagrant self-promotion to do this, but in addition to being a Pleasant Commentator and Review Group reviewer, I review things in my blog, too. I think I have about 9 or 10 blog posts up for that so far.

2731238

Cool, thanks for letting me know.

Impressive list. I am sorry to inform you that my story A Kezzerdrix in Equestria in the review by spideremblembrony to my story has been redone. Only time will tell as to what will happen to the review once the changed story is resubmitted. It was reworked by given suggestions and comments.
I say sorry, because you took the time to find the review on the day I came looking for someone to look over the remake before I submit the newer one.

Okay, maybe it's just because I'm tired, but... I'M SO CONFUSED! A story of mine was apparently added to 'The Master List' bookshelf, but I can't find my name on the spreadsheet, nor was I aware of anyone having reviewed the story (or any of my stories, for that matter). What am I missing? Did the story get added by mistake?
