Yes. . . a surprise party!
About suggestion for a party... In theory Pinkie did not need a reason for a party... But what about 'Congratulations for employ the diamond dogs' party? Or maybe a 'Congratulations Sweetie Belle for return' party? They only need a little.
Well. It was a decent enough chapter. However, I still find spikes logic flawed. Applejack still is applejack, and rarity is still rairty. The didnt swap souls, they are still the ponies they were before, it's more like the cutie mark is memories. It just makes it wierd for me if this isn't addressed. Especially since their plan pretty much revolves around them still being good at what they did before. Pretty much the entire applejack and spike parts I just felt odd, it didn't feal right. I don't know how else to describe it. Though that could be intentional. I missed Lero and the gang this chapter though.
For good or bad, thats no longer true thanks to Friends Forever comic 14.

Turns out Spike is just one of many dragons (who are apparently Chinese based in terms of culture) living as citizens of Equestria.
Discord = THAT GUY!!!
Swap just gave her the power to detect gems? That is pretty powerful.
5729109
I'm going to call bull on that comic due to the episode where they couldn't find anything about dragons in books.
i.imgur.com/PMfqOe2.png That chapter length...
5728732
Hey, we like worldbuilding, too, and whenever there's room for in in our stories, we include it. But sometimes you just have to tell a story.
5728971
Actually, this is something that's been discussed before- The actualy issue is the swap is sort of a mashup of the two ponies. After all, who are you besides your memories?
5729109
Yeah, I'm going to have to call "non-canon" on that story. It's cute and fun, but make no sense in context of the actual show itself- It basically makes Celestia a kidnapper, Twilight an idiot, and completelly undermines Spike's character, and directly contradicts several things said in the show.
5730012
Is that good or bad?
5730223 Depend's how you look at it...
i.imgur.com/REDVqoD.png Cool dude! Got something to do today...
i.imgur.com/fPrHdDZ.png Aww nuts! There goes my whole day...
5730223 I would agree,.what are we but our memorIes. However, they stIll potray many of the characterIstIcs that were formed becuase of thIer orIgInal memorIes. In fact, If you put them In a room and just had a converasatIon wIth them wIthout knowIng they swapped you mIght not even notIce.
5730008
5730223
We'll apparently it is cannon since they were going to do something else but Hasbro made them do it like that to "fit with what they had planed for the show."
Fortunately for me, I think its a cool new direction for dragons but I seem to be alone in that regard.
5730817
Actually, re-read the story. They've been exhibiting traits of both ponies.
5731228
Well, I wouldn't have a problem with it if it didn't severely undermine multiple elements already established in the show- I like the comic- in a vacuum- but it just doesn't fit in with the rest of the series.
Honestly, it might be plausible if it was someplace outside of Equestria, in some other nation- but downtown Fillydelphia? It doesn't work.
Spike you little player you.
Now I know what I'm going to watch on dailymotion.
I did not care for that spike/lero swap dream sequence , also holy shit discord, that was a dick move.
5731266 I would say most traits they show of the swapped pony are from the memories. I'm just saying I think spike is wrong going after AJ, the things he loved about Rarity, are well still a part of rarity.
5731467
He loved everything about Rarity. How could he pick one over the other? The fact that he's not going after the other parts of Rarity is because it's not possible.
I am pleased.
Yes, of course. Well, that's the thing about assumptions. If you knew you were making them, you wouldn't.
In any case, I'm very glad that I finally caught up with this. Great stuff all around. Applejack's reconfiguration was excellently creepy, and Discord's revenge was perfectly suited for him. Still getting the hang of the whole "collateral damage is a bad thing" concept.
As for Fluttershy... well, we'll see how well this plan works out. I suspect her parties aren't going to be quite as rambunctious as Pinkie's, though. Still, even if it works, someone needs to run maintenance on Applejack before she backslides into total oblivion.
Oh the fools, If only they would let Rarity try to help AJ, they would discover the cure.
5730223
Actually, they did kinda swap souls, core essences or whatever you want to call it, along with the cutie mark. After they kept rejecting Rarity's rather forward advances she became miserable and they did that mind-merge-y thing and what was inside Rarity was just Rainbow Dash (the beach scene).
The basic conclusion they reached was that the swapped ponies are basically the soul or whatever the cutie mark represents being filtered through the body and mind it's occupying with the least amount of memory modification possible to sustain itself (Which it still is a lot).
Hence they ended up embracing Rarity because if they drove her away and she ended up hating them once they went back to normal even if neither Rarity or RD remembered why, RD would still hate them and the damage caused to their relationship would be just as real.
They have the passions and desires of the soul that's inhabiting the body, but thend body doesn't have the skills, muscle memory or recollection to how to fulfill those desires, excepting when some extreme episode forces an "info-dump" to maintain the consistency of the swap.
A teally passive agressive party for Discord
I wonder if the dream Spike had was his own or something Luna cooked up to push him in a healthier direction than his crush on Rarity. Maybe his subconscious is telling him he should be looking at females his age through his dialog with young Lero?
Okay, Discord really went and did a dick move there.
At least things keep progressing.
I still wonder if this story would be better served by a gray ending rather than a happy one.
I remember an old time sci fi story set in H Beam Piper's Paratime Police world but not by him about any situation having multiple outcomes & thus multiple parallel universes. (All the Myriad Ways by Niven?)
Point being, all infinites of the same order are, by definition, equal in size. That is, for instance, the set of "all numbers" is no larger than the set of "every ten thousandth prime number".
Given an infinite number of universes everything must not only have happened but happened an infinite number of times. Thus, there are an infinite number of worlds where Twilight has already solved the problem. Just find 1 & ask her. There are an infinite number where she refuses, but also an infinite number where she says yes.
5734815
Problem is, it might require an infinite ammount of time to do that.
5734719
Honestly, from what I know about the ending, it's debatable to call it "happy". More like "Resolves the story arc, and plays out the consequences." Remember, the entire point of this story was to examine the stuff glossed over in the original, which included consequences.
5733444
It's been implied that Luna's been sending dreams to those on the Exception List as a way to assist them. Whether or not she sent this particular dream, or any other? Well, you'd have to ask her.
5732893
Well, I'm not going to debate the existance of souls, or anything like that- but yeah, there's no arguement that something was exchanged.
But not everything. That's what made Magical Mystery Cure so fascinating to me- it was so unlike any other "Freaky Friday" swap. Every other one I've seen was someone's entire soul/memory/esscence/whatever. It was teh whole person, just in the wrong body. This one? It was parts of both. that is what makes it so interesting.
As for the 'beach scene', those were dreams or Asks, so their canonicity is debatable- on top of that, jsut because Rainbow Dash is there, it doesn't mean that A) It's all of Dash, or B) there's no one else there.
Also, which "They" are you refering to? Me and Mike? If so, It's really weird you telling me my own conclusions.
But yeah, there's little question there's something of Dash in Rarity, and they suspect (but have not proven) doing things to it will influence Dash in the swap back. This, too, was either a dream or speculation, so it's not absolute thatit's "True", it's just the theory that everyone's operating under.
5732758
Yeah, but they don't have any reason (yet) to suspect that they kept theri core skills- just ancilary ones. But yeah, they came painfully close to the right answer.
True. But then again, you could devise a search spell w the parameters of "find a universe where somebody has solved this problem & is willing to tell me" You will both succeed & fail an infinite number of times.
This way lies madness. (which is the point of the short story). Talk to Discord about this one.
5735210
Of course. Thing is, I wonder which way the conclusion will go. As it is, Twilight currently seems to have the cure as a secondary priority, with her primary one being Lero's containment strategy.
Furthermore, it seems that you have now steered to the road shown in the show: the originals being put to help their swappers on their tasks. Conversely, you have introduced early enough that the cutie marks will fight against this subversions, up to turning the swappers into raving lunatics. Therefore, this possible ending remains as a treacherous one.
5730705
Well… I hope you found the chapter enjoyable, at least!
My reactions to Discord.

Considering I've never cared about spike/rarity in general (or just plain spike), this chapter was one big blah to me. It was still done well, but I ended up skimming most of it.
5731228 There's a timeframe issue. If those dragons migrated to Phillydelphia only like a year ago, say after they saw Equestria through the Great Dragon Migration or something, then they would not be around long enough for medical books on dragons to be written, and they certainly would not have been available long enough for Celestia to know the location of dragons who would be good parents to an egg she just found.
A great chapter, I like Spike's POV. I kind of wonder why he didn't shred that diamond dog's arm with his razor-sharp claws, but that was clearly AJ's moment to shine. I love that line Spike used on Sweetie Bell about needing her to protect him too, I doubt Spike is ever going to shake her off now!
Now I wonder: Are Sweetie Bell's parents monogamists? If not, she probably would have stayed with a herdmother instead of Rarity.
5736301
Strewth Mate,
All the comments on this chapter and you respond to little ole me... I feel honored.
Let me kick this of by saying; This is the Spike chapter I have been waiting for. He is really maturing nicely.
Everyone seems to be pointing out what Discord did, as coming-the-raw-prawn with Spike and AJ.(including the story characters). I disagree.
In my top paddock, I see it as an attempt by ole-matey-potatey Discord to hurry things along a bee's dick. He as a character must be sick to death of having to clean up after everything 'Team Equilibrium(TE)' do to help the swapped. I can only imagine how much work the so called 'data avalanche' that poor Applejack received, caused for Discord. The positive effect it had on both Applejack's and Spike's demeanor would have given him two birds with which to hit with one stone. Derail the equilibrium train and punish Spike.
In my humble opinion. It was Exactly the right thing to do, given the direction TE were heading. Granted, they are doing the best they can with the knowledge they have. But with the knowledge we have, we all know that that is never going to work.
Straight after Spike the little battler made it home and spilled-his-guts about what Discord had done, TE immediately hit upon the idea that using friends with unknown yet innate skill sets that can assist those having the most difficulty with their Cutie Mark compulsion. The misguided but well-intentioned TE are focusing on Fluttershy's 'freaky knowledge about sewing,' which I can only assume will drag a few more chapters out of this ripper of a story. But at least it is a step in the right direction to what we all know is the cure.
This of course is just a theory, I won't bother to defend any attack against it. I will let what happens in the story disprove me. She'll be right, mate.
You have mates
PhucknuckL
P.S. Discord has my "vote" for the Party. And not just because everyone is baggin him out.
Let me explain.
MMC takes place barely three episodes after Keep Calm and Flutter On and from what we had seen, Pinkie Pie had yet to throw him a party. Sorry. But In my headcanon, she would never have left it that long to throw a party for a new friend, regardless of who they were. Her nature wouldn't allow it. (Even if it is just to shoot him in the face with her party cannon.)
In this instance I can't think of anyone Discord would love to have throw him a party more than, Fluttershy-who-is-Pinkie! The Fluttershy part that accepts him as he is and the Pinkie Pie part that TE are trying to help.
5737621
Well, if you don't particularly care for a character, there's not a huge ammount we can do to change that, outside of doing our best write them well, Alas.
5737987
I've not discussed it was Mike, so no canonical answer, But my theory is that they're not, (there was a side story or forum idea a while back that implied they were close with AJ's parents, but nothing came of it because, well, they died.) They still date and occasionally sleep around a bit, but they've just not found anyone that "clicks" with them yet, and this is further complicated by their love of travel- It's had to find a steady date when you're out of the country so often. (I told this idea to another friend... who promptly made a joke about them meeting Daring Do in their travels, helping her save the world... then sleeping with her. >_> My friend's sense of humor is weird.)
I'm late to the comments because I had to decide what to say.
...
Yeah. OK. Alternate titles: Discord is an Asshole, or Undo Button: The Chapter. I mean, it was written well enough, but damn. I don't know what I was expecting, but this wasn't it.
-----
On a broader note, you really should read this if you haven't already. It's very relevant on several levels. Since you're covering similar terrain, you're hitting similar roadblocks.
You've attempted to address this with... mixed results.
And this is the Brick Wall of Doom we're headed for (and which I've pissed and moaned in the comments about since 2013). The show writers slammed into it because Hasbro Said So. You've (presumably) already decided whether to swerve, brake, or floor it, and now we're just waiting to see what happens.
Others have covered my concerns that this story has been chasing its own tail rather than going wherever it's meant to go, but I'm also concerned about the final destination. Regardless of how you decide to resolve the Swap (and any which way you go, you're doomed; that can of worms is already open), what happens afterwards will also make or break the story. Don't just be sure you know which way Twi will jump, also make sure you can explain why in some meaningful way.
Yaay for Earth Pony electroseisomagical gem finding ability. The bleeding obvious. I wish to plant crops in this ground, but tehres a cluster of minerals over there that are detrimental to growth, gems, but over there they are supportive of growth, phosphrous.
Discord is still complaining about face punch?
5729554
I almost thought you were referring to 'That Man' from Guilty Gear.
5729915
Yes, indeed, the Swap IS a real force to be reckoned with!
5732385
I had to throw that one in. You're the first person to have ever 'fanficked' me!
Soooo close, and yet sooo far!
I'm really glad you thought so too!
Ever hear of the "New Powers At The Plot Demands It" trope? I meant for this to deconstruct that!
And Discord… yeah, like he said back in 21, it's not just WHAT you do, it's WHEN you do it.
You'll see what happens with Fluttershy's party in the next upcoming chapter.
5741365
I completely understand the first alternate title, (heh) but the second?
"Undo Button…" when you put it that way, I almost feel like I've written an episode of The Simpsons, and the plot line has inevitably cycled back to the series' status quo.
Plot developments have happened in this chapter. Sweetie Belle's been brought into this story, for one thing. Spike's matured a lot as a person, for another. Don't confuse a lack of success for a reset button. Lero's had his share of setbacks and defeats, and now Spike's experienced one of his own.
How you handle defeats says a lot about you as a person.
I assure you: I am not 'chasing my tail.'
I do love surprising my audience!
5739090
…You don't know HOW accomplished I feel after reading that sentence, buddy.
It's always fun reading an alternate interpretation like this. You truly are a free thinker, dude.
Couldn't have said it better myself: that's EXACTLY what Spike is, at this point.
5741925
Oh, don't get me wrong. I don't mean "nothing happened", and I think I see where it's going (forcing the Mane Six to help one another, as in the episode). I mean "undo button" as in "Discord ruins quite a bit of apparent progress". And the "chasing tails" bit was about something that seems to be over and done with.
5741965
I've been called worse I s'pose.
Although it helps being on the other side of the planet, it kinda skews my perspective. Everything is upside down and backwards in here.
You'z lot 'r' flamin bonkers.
Personally, I'm kinda glad that Discord has extracted his payment. As bad as it was, it's no longer hanging over Spike's head. It was a set back, but Spike made a lot of progress and I don't think things are as bad off as he believes. Plus, from an external point of view, it puts them on the road to having the friends help each other and points this story towards the home stretch.
That brings me to a disturbing question. We know the Mane 6 can help each other conquer the swap, obviating the need for Twilight to produce a counter-spell. But what about Honeydew and Exit Wound? Could Herd Bellerophon in good conscience leave them swapped? I don't think they would feel right about that. Soul synthesis is an option but the Honey sisters don't deserve that. But how could they unswap them? Maybe with the sisters' help they could figure out what Honeydew's talent is and help her back, if she doesn't murder them first. But what about Exit Wound? Is someone going to help her learn to kill people again?! Can Honeydew even be fully restored without also restoring Exit Wound? Yet, even though they brought it on themselves, wouldn't the Herd find it morally repugnant to leave them like that?
I've been thinking about the swaps. I suppose the flat out impossible ones are ruled out. For instance, if Apple Jack was the Element of Magic & she can't use magic then that variant would be impossible. But, in infinite universes anything possible would happen
Pinkie being the Element of Magic is marginally possible, I suppose she does enough weird stuff it might work. The impossible part would be Celestia trusting her with something delicate & dangerous. Still, I suppose the spell would justify it as a mistake.
I'd love to see what she'd do w the job.
5766256
Unfortunately, the Swap would almost never 'rule out' any reassignment of life roles, no matter how impossible. Had Applejack been Swapped with a living salmon, odds are horrendously high you'd quickly find yourself with a very drowned AJ.
True enough. If push came to one HARD SLAM of a shove, the Swap might even go so far as to 'revamp' AJ to become capable of wielding a very weak form of, er… 'unicorn-esque' magic, similar to the 'gem hunches' she gets in Chapter 35.
Surprisingly, Pinkie-In-Twilight's-role would be one of the easiest 'refits' for the Swap to pull off. Pinkie the Mage would be capable of doing nearly everything's Twilight's capable of doing, only via 'Looney Tunes' stunts, instead of spell casting.
There'd still be some spots where it'd be a 'rough fit,' though. For one thing, she'd read as much as Twilight, but her hyperactivity would compel her to 'speed read' ineffectively, and be unable to retain the majority of the information.
Pinkie would probably take Celestia's assignment to 'learn more about friendship' even MORE seriously than Twilight, (remember what a social butterfly the real Pinkie is at heart.) So Pinkie the Mage would pay social visits to a lot more ponies, too.
But like Rarity the Weathermare, Mage Pinkie would also be extremely loving to Lero, and vice versa, (once he got used to her level of exuberance.) She'd also 'magic' up a lot more baked goods for her whole family to enjoy.
…If anyone would be interested in writing a recursive fanfic staring Mage Pinkie, I'd happily grant my permission!
I'd write it myself but I lack the skills
Just remember, Pinkie loves pranks, although (unlike Discord) she does have some clue about limits. Still, my idea of Hell is a bored Pinkie capable of using magic.
So, before I decide whether or not I want to take a dive into this story, would someone be so kind as to explain to me how the author has stretched the events of Magical Mystery Cure into a ... 550k+ story?
I feel like more happens than just 'Lero deals with it'. Depending on where Mike Teavee goes with this, it could become a really great story, but I'm going to need something more substantial than the story's description to convince me to begin this fic. Feel free to be spoiler-ific.
