Living in Equestria under a false name and racial identity is one thing. Finding out you're not the only one of your kind stranded here is another... especially when that someone and the element bearers are looking for you.

Being my first attempt at a first-person romantic comedy, this takes a slightly different approach to the concept of being a human stranded in Equestria.

When a dark enemy begins hunting the young wizard Twilight Sparkle, the walls of the fortress library of Candlekeep cannot protect her. Not even her mentor, the archmage Star Swirl the Bearded, can keep her safe. With a price on her head and the shadow of death on her heels, her only hope for salvation is the Magic of Friendship. Perhaps, with powerful allies at her side, she can find answers and uncover the truth about her destiny.

(This story is inspired by the Baldur's Gate CRPG series by Bioware, but you do not have to be familiar with BG to understand its events)

She has entered the realm of Everglow, where the queen is a queen, and ponies suffer horribly lethal combat much more often than Equestria could manage under the peaceful reign of its alicorn caretakers.

Will she find her way back home, to her friends and responsibilities? Will she survive the harsh new realm she has entered?

Somewhere in Equestria, there exists a letter penned long ago. Not a particularly extraordinary letter, mind you. It does not contain any ancient spells lost to the annals of time, nor cryptic warnings for future ponies to decipher. No, it is simply a message written by a sorrowful mare who just needed some guidance.

This is that letter.

Vinyl Scratch knew from the day they met that she and Octavia would be friends forever. They were inseparable, indivisible, invincible. Nothing would change that, Octavia promised. Nothing.

However, as time goes on, not all foalhood promises seem concrete. Time, after all, changes everything.

In the far reaches of Canterlot Castle, high above in the towers lived the archmage. Everypony knew her, yet few had met her.

Twilight Sparkle sighed, having teleported away another noble seeking favors before reaching the top of the stairs for the second time today. They never learned. As the archmage, she already dealt with political squabbles far too often without inviting them into her home. Aside from personal favors for Celestia, she did what was required of her position and then returned to seclusion and research.

The nobility grumbled that no archmage should be a commoner, and Twilight’s disrespect toward them proved it. Each and every time they were forced to bow to her, they hated what they saw: the position, the status, the deference.

Was she not powerful? Was she not great?

Twilight, now reading through dusty scrolls and long forgotten tales, wrote in her notes — notes gathering dust of their own. A brief thought flashed through her mind.

Am I not powerful? Am I not great?

And then Twilight picked up The Tale of the Royal Pony Sisters.

Defunct side stories told in Across the Boundary. They can still provide a little context, but when in doubt, the main story here is canon.

Ponies make mistakes. They make mistakes because they have flaws. They have flaws because they're not perfect, and they're not perfect because they're not Diamond Tiara.

Humans are the same way. None of them are Diamond Tiara either. That's probably why they're all so silly and absurd. Most of them are even silly enough to believe that there's something wrong with Diamond Tiara. How crazy is that?

Of course, crazy is as crazy does. The problem is that reality does too. Every time Diamond Tiara finds some attention, she keeps getting shoved aside so someone else can soak it all up. What sort of reality lets something like that happen? Where's the fairness in a world where Diamond Tiara can be overshadowed by someone who's not Diamond Tiara? Do the forces that be just enjoy messing with her? If that's the case, they're lucky she's nice.
