Edit: Comment: Hm...darkness training. Always the more difficult of lessons. Some with very different morals and end results.
yes yes yes
good stuff so far, definitely liking this. I did find the conversation with Cadence a little jarring though, the cut to the end of the day seemed to appear from nowhere.
A double post in the best possible way. Twilight is best pony. Luna is best shadow mage. Yay magic varieties!
1708289 this day just gets better and better... while I was out, another chapter posted, giving me something awesome to look forward to upon coming home.

*Mischievous laughter*
Why the hell did it have me quoting the guy above me on my last post?
1708768 Ok Chuckles... what the hell is up with the laughter? What evil plot are you planning to hatch?
You ain't planning on convincing the author to throw a sick and twisted GranLight ship into this story, are you???
1708989
Not evil, mischievous.
you'll see why soon enough.
good chapter!
my current vision of luna: she's a bi-polar, vague bitch who's a bad teacher to boot. i was grinding my teeth by the time luna finished explaining what she had intended to teach twi. that might have been a good lesson to some, but for twi it just feels redundant and ineffective. i know; my opinion is very extreme at the moment, and probably very colored, but still; that's how i feel, we'll see if it changes...
It's odd. Luna says she needs to teach Twilight of humility, but like Twilight says, she was anything but humble throughout the chapter. Her whole lesson was a game of her lording her "wisdom" over Twilight when there must have been far simpler ways to go about it. It wasn't about teaching Twilight a lesson, it was about showing Twilight that she was wiser. It's kind of the opposite of humility.
Luna and Twilight were talking about being humble and such, and I'm sure there's a point of view where this is all understandable and agreeable, but all I see is Luna being a dick.
awesome.
Twilight was supposed to lose but she still managed to get in one good solid buck ... I wonder if any archmage had ever done that much before ... Did they learn their humble lesson in a day? or did it take them the entire week it took to exhaust Twilight?

The perspective is the null-perspective.
Right before I read this chapter I was playing the first Kingdom Hearts game. The similarities between shadow magic and "the darkness" is uncanny.
Hmmm... Reminds me of basic training... except... I'm still here, getting the shit kicked out of me daily, and we don't really get breaks (sometimes we get a day off... First 5 weeks though, we were working 24/7. no leave, whatsoever.)... Good story so far. Will definitely keep reading.
Oh, goody, it's the "This Looks Like A Test Of Combat Skill But I Will Beat You Without Fail Every Time So The Only True Win Condition Is To Give Up" Test. I've never liked those. They make me angry every time I read them, having a personal allergy to humble pie, and they continue to anger me when the recipient of the TLLATOCSBIWBYW/OFETSTOTWCI2GUT accepts the lesson without so much as a bat of the eye.
I mean, if I were Twilight here, I'd at least give Luna a telekinetic bitch-slap just for pulling that stunt. Especially after the broken rib.
That minor quibble aside, this is still shaping up to be a magnificent story.
it's =/= its

Three times in twenty seconds. Nice.
Besides that, I really like the story so far.
Oh wow, this story's amazing. I love how things like love and friendship are treated as different schools of magic, and the characterization is very detailed.

I couldn't say it better myself.

It is not enough to simply give up. You must know why you are giving up, and be able to admit to it. That is why she can't just come out and tell her she must.
Fine chapter. The action scenes were very nice and easy to follow, depicted through excellent detail. Now, after meeting with Cadence, I can't wait for Twi to learn about love.
~SolidFire
Luna beat Twilight up to show her that Shadow Magic won't tolerate anypony trying to be the boss of it, but from their dialogue it seems Light Magic needs to be overpowered in order to master it. As hard as this has been for Twilight, I suspect Celestia's lessons are gonna be even worse
Luna isn't humble at all. She states her teleportation ability as being good for one thing. And ironically enough, claiming herself to be the definition of humility is just about as far from humble as you can get (reminds me of Weirds Als "I'm a million times as humble as thou art"). Her double standards made her dislikable.
4181848 Two rebuttles there. The first is that Luna was in combat with Twilight and playing off of her emotions with her teleportation comment, so that doesn't count. The second is that she never claimed to be the definition of humility so much as that she was capable of it. She is in a way the definition of darkness but humility is only one aspect and not synonymous. She can claim to be darkness all she wants and yet still remain humble as long as it is true. Pretending to be something your not is a two way street and it is just as easy to pretend to be less of yourself than what you are as to be greater. Pretending to be insignificant isn't humility, it's just plain annoying. So Luna wasn't being boastful but rather respectful and humble where she need be. With that in mind I must disagree with your statements in both regards.
I know I am more than a year late with this, but 2453469 sums it up rather nicely, I'd say. Twilight was quite humble when we saw her lose; the fact that she's humble this time BEFORE getting kicked while down isn't her being humble, it's her being a pet begging not to get punished further for something it doesn't understand. She already showed humility, and had done so before the training began, so it was highly unnecessary.
I am reading this for the fifth time.
Help
4973908 why need help? this is amazing. no seriously, I agree it's that good.
4203191
you replied perfectly. while reading the comments, I had the same arguments running through my head. and I believe this goes for a few of the comments up there, not just the one obvious recipient.
I really want Twilight to be mad at Luna.
4973908 i know how you feel there are certain stories that ive reread like 10 times
2453469
That's what I thought too. I understood the lesson in humility, but it also felt like Luna was also on a bit of an ego-trip, being able to force Celestia's prized student into kneeling before her superior might.
rereading this i feel that twilight should have been at least a little mad at luna for using such a crude method to teach her 2 lessons
5930760
It might be crude, but I guarantee it's a lesson that Twilight will never forget. Hard won knowledge and wisdom is much stronger in the mind than things that come too easily.
I listened to this during the fight scene ->
healthy? HEALTHY? 8 HOURS IS HEALTHY NOT 6!!!

Technically you're right. Although it's easy to see how those words could be confused (Even I had to look it up).

Did your opinion ever change?
Well this is pretty good as far as magic-all-day-every-day stories go.
Pretty close on characters, but I still wanna see just how many magic's you have conjured up my good thaumaturge.
I think I cut myself while I was reading, Luna
7514592 I think so.

Twilight is infuriatingly patient. It's one of her best qualities. She even lies to herself about how patient she is before admitting something bothers her.
Luna is the Princess of the Night. It appears the Night has some trouble with openly and clearly communicating its wants and wishes, and a tendency towards violence.
Even if she didn't believe Celestia, Celestia wasn't the only witness to the craziness of that day. Plus a dragon going through the roof has got to get a lot of people attention.
Luna: Excellent warrior, poor teacher.

Honestly, Twilight should have been a bit angry way earlier, the second she realized Celestia didn’t tell her that she was elected as the new Archmage till the very day of the funeral/ceremony - three days Celestia had the chance lol. Luna probably would have been more understanding of Twi’s nerves and doubts considering some of Twi’s first thoughts on the matter was when everybody’s eyes was on her as she performed the tradition.
