I got a question....If Bastion is like...the king of shield...where the hell was he when the Changelings attacked?!
1943370 Well, that would have been when Glow was still alive. So, not sure if he would have been in charge of that. On another note they may have already been stealthily implanted into the community and in waiting. Not sure, speculation.
Excellent job, keep up the good work!

Playing chess with Luna
1943370 Also, while he may be the expert in shields, I doubt he has the raw power that Shining Armor has.
Hmmmm, Well I'm gonna mentally refer to this chapter as that one about shields and Bastion. I'm also going to refer to the shields defending Canterlot as barriers, and the personal defense shields as shields. Seems less confusing that way.
In other news, Long comment is long. 721 words. I wrote a three page comment. I think I need to go lie down...
Man Bastion's parents must have waited a while to have kids if he's Nocturnal Glow's grandson. Bastion's what, fifity? Nocturnal Glow was near 300. Or maybe Nocturnal Glow's like Hugh Hefner and had kids when he was old or something. Man he's a player. Actually, what about Bastion's parents/Glow's kids. Where were they? Bastion seemed almost overly sad that his grandpa wasn't able to spend much time with him. Did he look up to him as a role model or goal or something?
I liked the Canterlot backstory and the method by which the shields were powered. Spell forms and the such have always been a favorite. Love the idea of written spells/ spells as a language. (see the novel Spellwright for best example) Wondering if that leveler spell is gonna come into play later in a "nearly kill everyone kind of way". Actually, who put those there! That seems really irresponsible.
The idea of living barriers/magic is one that opens a plethora of questions and concepts that I can't fathom, both philosophical and practical. Is it just barriers that can become alive or can any magic come alive Fantasia style. Do they die when the barriers go out? Is it moral to let the barriers go out. I'm gonna guess that these questions aren't going to be answered so I'm going to assume that there are very very few living magic stuff.
The normal time frame of repairing the barriers seems a little off. Bastion mentions that its going to take them about twelve hours to fix things and show her the ropes, five to seven hours normally to maintain it. Fast forward five hours and they're done. If its normally five to seven hours, that's a good portion of the Archmage's day, so try and keep an eye on how an Archmage's average day would go (assuming they're not Twilight, the best magical prodigy) without forcing them to burn themselves out. A near 300 year old unicorn was able to do this stuff even when near death (at least I assume he was able to do this stuff while near death.) This, of course, is almost all void if the barrier renewal is not a daily occurance.
Difficulty of reaching the barriers seems a little high. Can anyone try to do what Twilight and Bastion did if they know a little about shields (both kinds), or do you have to have a proper shield keyed to the barriers or something. If its the first, that seems like a security flaw, and if its the second, God forbid someone tries to break into the apex without the proper key or approach it while distracted. (Which Bastion did mention in an earlier chapter actually, so good for him)
The illusions that she saw probably should have tried to get her to move in some direction like Luna standing before Twilight telling her she hates her and wants Twilight to leave or something. Sure she nearly fell off once but that didn't really feel like it was the result of the illusion, just kind of a misstep. As it is, they just seemed to cause emotional pain/trauma for the sake of emotional pain/trauma. The parts with Celestia and Luna should have had a bit more environmental description, like the part with her parents had. Like "Celestia turned to leave" or "Luna appeared from the shadows of a bookshelf to Twilight's right."
Bastion also probably should have told her before all that, that she'd start to get illusions showing your worst fears and self doubts. She's dealt with them before in the Crystal Kingdom after all. And its another example to throw on the "Nobody Tells Twilight Anything" wagon. Heck at this point she should be pissed anytime anyone tells her, "It was better that I didn't tell you." Like the dual, Luna avoiding her and parents dying combo would get brought right back up into the forefront of her mind.
Edit: Gah, this took like, an hour and a half to make too!
Congratulations for making featured. Again.
Great chapter.
I especially liked the crystals with spell-form's in them (who needs charcoal drawing's when you can have city destroying glowing crystals).
I can imagine Twilight accidentally levitating Canterlot .
1944105
yeah....I figured that as I was writing that rant... not really my finest moment...
Edit: and your story is one of those I like to go back and read way too much. just update moar! (but really, take your time)
Dude, I haven't even opened the first chapter yet, and I'm already in love with your story. Definitely looking forward to seeing Twilight star in this!
Rock on, Twilight Sparkle! You are the best pony!
^
Okay, well that's my opinion, anyway.
No, wait! Alright, you ARE the best pony! Please don't hurt me!
Slightly scared by the 'mature sex' tag, though...
awesome chapter! i wish there were art work of this, that cavern would have been absolutely stunning when painted.
Up to 7 hours a day to keep up the shields? When does the Archmage do anything not routine, or even do all the routine matters?
1945290 Didn't it say that it was a weekly thing? Like, once a week? It's a week for the apex, at least. I'm assuming it's the same for the other five separate shields.
1945290
It mentions that he has to do this only once a week.
"According to Bastion, he made this trip once a week, and would visit every single shield once to ensure all was well."
HA! take that you stuck up council bastards! more story quickly! i can't wait to see her show those pompous jerks who's the archmage.
Wow, Archmage have sush a hard and sad life, doing 20 works like: helping move sun and moon where one mistake can get you killed, spending hours each day fixing shield, and who knows what else.
Not to mention that after all hard work Archmage have to do, everyday he must pass shield in and out, everyday he is assaulted by illusions what hurt him the most, I can not imagine Twilight having her parents telling her everyday that they died because of her, her teacher she admire so much telling her she is failure and love telling her she is ..... .
It is a hard work for Bastion who studied shield 20 years and had to deal with this crap everyday, but Twilight who will have tons of other duties to do alongside this one, wont it be to much mental and physical pressure for her, she may be powerful archmage, but she sure have limits, having a lot magic power do not increase durability and mental strength, I wonder why none of Archmages before her even break or was killed by playing with powers who would crush they mind and bodies after 1 tiny mistake.
As much as Twilight love to learn and study, would not having a routine of hard life risking work everyday without friends and fun make her hate her job, that is why she stayed in Ponyvile with her friends in the first place.
1947195 "We must add power ourselves every week or so to keep the shields running."
not everyday

1943855 One day Archmage Twilight is going to curl in to a very, very small little ball and begin muttering: "Nopony tells Twily anything, nopony tells Twily anything, nopony tells Twily anything...."

This situation can only be rectified with KNOWING. EVERYTHING.

: It's gonna be okay Twah. Ya know th' girls and Ah are always gonna be honest with ya.
:T-thanks Applejack. It's good to know I can trust my friends not to keep something from me, no matter how life altering or unhappy.
: Of course you can trust us, Darling. What kind of friends would just leave you in the dark about something so dire you deserve to know?
: S-so u-uh g-girls, when are we going to tell her I'm pregnant with Discord's baby?
: Consarnit, Flutt--
1951051
So I admittedly saw the title of the video before I read the body of your comment... At the beginning, I was wondering how in the world this could escalate to a nuclear explosion... Straight up until Rarity (And halfway through fluttershy's dialogue) everything was normal...
Then we took a left turn into fucktown where canon doesn't mean anything and everything is possible...
Eeyup, I fuckin' love my fans.
1952696 All Twiluna and no honesty in relationships makes Knight a dull brony
Also, good to know I can write IC well enough to lull you into a false sense of security. It will be good for when pulling u-turns and sucker punches on my reader base in my more serious work.
Dagnabbit I have to know.
You guys, did you get the idea for the Archmage story from the story "Like Fine Wine" by sleeplessbrony?
There are some very VERY odd coincidences in these two stories which I just cannot ignore. Actually only one really, but a big one.
Is this true? Or is it just my imagination running wild and seeing connections where there are none?
1971842
Both Iroh nor I have ever heard of or read that story, so no.
1971866
Just my mind running wild then. Very odd coincidence though. Both stories tell of Archmage Twilight.
Part one is before she's one but ends with Celestia mentioning the Archmage to her.
Then the second part is where Twilight is already a fully realized Archmage and did amazing things in her still going life.
Why am I saying these things again? Not sure, I like ranting I suppose. Anyway! Back to reading now, keep up the work and all that.
Yeah, guess you guys hear that too much x3
1950889 and that folks is Trixie in a nut shell
That was a fun chapter. The defenses of those shields though... I fear that could drive Twilight mad with grief over time. Can't wait to read more!
~SolidFire
2564860 you forgot the irrational fear of wheels
Bastion is gradually getting softer and softer as this goes along
4408454 kinda like a male Tsundere
I know Twilight is Main Character, but is she going to perpetually be the “you’re better than anyone else has ever been!” pony? It’s starting to become a little much - it would be nice if she actually failed a little before success.
