......i feel sad, that's all i can say oh and angry but moving on you are a really good writer and you should keep up the good work
.............wait......what happened to the feather?!
Shit........wings...........fix..........fortheloveofgod!
Delighted as always to see a new chapter pop up for this, all of them great. Your skills in the art of cliffhanger are still as strong as ever i see.

He's wearing it. It just wasn't important for him to go looking for it at the time. He handed his necklace to Scoots before he charged into the house.
*Edited a few lines at the end to show he still has it*
well, you have exceeded my expectations yet again, good job! Still loving the story!

*rolls about* And what were your expectations, sir?
Alright now that I know Sweetie Belle is OK I can fanboy now.
OK I don't care what anybody says Steelhoof is the best kind of neutral/possible antagonist/master troll character. His whole 'Mister Starstep' routine is awesome and I like how he and Star are building this pseudo rivalry relationship. I actually wouldn't be surprised he if has a way to fix his wings, for a price of course.
Now it looks like it will be back to Ponyville and we'll get some possible great scenes with Sweetie Belle and Rarity, Starstep asking his parents to adopt Lighthoof, Star's parents' reactions to their son courting Scootaloo (and one of the immortal divine princess sisters possibly). Also getting to see a CMC reunion will bring many feels, and finally Star may drive out Apple Bloom's stalker (of course he is terribly injured so maybe he shouldn't be playing detective when he gets home). Finally, Luna will hopefully get to have her talk with Cheerilee, who will be a pleasant sight to see, hopefully with her lover/resident mad scientist Twilight Sparkle.
There are just so many possible things (and if course there will be unexpected surprises) to look forward to I can hardly wait .
Hmm... interesting revelations are a comin'. Predictions are being made, as always I look forward to the next chapter.
1043078that this would be another great chapter in the saga of StarStep the pegasus
Steel hoof... kingpin... trauma...accident... Marvel's sliding time scale and a rabbit
*Sigh* I was hoping you wouldn't go for the injured wing bit.
Liquid Dragon-fire = Napalm?

For the good of the overall story, this was necessary. One, as a sacrifice for his friend, and two, as a engine that drives the characters to Ponyville for major developments. Sure, it's been done before, but he is a pegasus. And wings are important to them, like magic/horns to unicorns. At least he was hurt in a spectacular way. Fire and ash and dragon-flames.
Plus, it also allows you readers to get a better insight into StarStep's character and how he deals with loss.

It sticks like napalm, but can devour stone and metal. Plus it has a natural resistance to magic.
nail biting action and drama. even the little things like that it was not just a normal house fire was an awesome way to spice up the chapter.
I love it

How can you be so awesome, yet so damn infuriating at the same time?! It's just one unexpected twist after another! And here I was thinking I had you figured out.
1047335
Infuriating? I'm not sure I like being that.
Well, if I didn't keep you ponies on your toes, it wouldn't be a very fun trip, would it? If you think I've twisted your brain now, just wait for the next few chapters. Poor, Poor StarStep.

Why the tears?
1047453 The whole time they were talking about his injured wings I had a doctors voice playing in my head saying. "He will never run again, or ever walk again for that matter". Can't remember what movie that's from, but it just sorta came outta nowhere. I hope this doesn't lead to him doubting himself towards Luna. Ya know the whole, I can't do as much as we originally could together etc etc, which would make be go. "aawwwwwwww, Star noooooo" . I also wonder if or how worried Luna is about him.

I also wonder is Celestia is worried as well, idk why but that thought also just randomly came to mind.
1051206 THERE NOT TEARS!!! ok maybe one, BUT THERE NOT!!!
Moar soon?

I plan on a new chapter up today (8/11/12). Sometime this afternoon. It's been a bit of a hectic week.
Chapter 28 notes: Ah, how unfortunate I was not there. I have dealt with dragon fire before and know several means to extinguish it. And, a simple asbestos cloak is able to resist it as it would normal fire. For asbestos shields against magical fires as efficiently as mundane ones.
*wiggles fingers* It's maaaaaagic!
1216893
...Aliens
And two, you have no fingers. Silly pony.
Three, perhaps asbestos doesn't exist in this world? And even if it did, I can't imagine an asbestos cloak would be very healthy for a pony. *shrug* eh, you'll have to give me some artistic license with the concept of Dragon-fire. I needed something Luna couldn't handle solo and presented a real threat. So, Magical napalm ftw.
Do not worry everypony Luna will make it better here hugs from Luna fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/195/f/d/luna_hug_by_tijimjoy-d577xxi.png
Steelhoof set the fire, it has to be him. My profile *rips open file filled with pictures and papers* suggests he is a criminal mastermind and a straigest. STARSTEP DONT FALL FOR IT!!!
“Pip, how did this happened?”
Incorrect and also irrelevant in this situation. Two ponies are in danger, possibly already dead, and you ask "what happened?"
“I had hoped she would win prize money and repay her loan.” Steelhoof said as he gave a disappointed shake of his head.
The longer she takes paying him back, the more money he'll end up with. This doesn't make much sense.

Well...unfortunately I can't say too much without spoilers. So I'll just say this, Steelhoof likes to play with pony's perceptions of things. He's trying to paint himself as not such a bad guy. I like to imagine him as a bad-ass chess player, who thinks ahead four to five steps. Sure, keeping Sweetie in debt long term would be profitable, but what advantages would he gain by being reasonable? Specially now that Luna is hosting a contest.
I don't fucking trust Steelhoof.....guys like that always give me the creeps.

That sound's like it was taken straight from a movie. At least it doesn't sound like it's been taken from Resident Evil, if ya know the cheesy crap they pull in those games.
Where did you draw the inspiration for Steelhoof? I love his character. He's something of a crook with a strong sense of ethics at least when it comes to business. I actually find him very interesting sort of like a crook that you want to get rid of but are better off just leaving him alone because he won't cause a lot of trouble as long as you leave him alone
Steelhoof reminds me much of John Marcone from The Dresden Files. Didn't see the similarities the first time I read through this fic. Will be interesting to see if they keep being similar. :)
Does anyone else think of The Illusive Man when reading what Steelhoof says?
3942453
Actually he reminds me of Gentleman Johnny Marcone from the Dresden Files book series.
Excellent story this is, by the way!
3939659
Lol saw the post after yours but not this. I completely agree!
4026583 WHAT IS THAT PROFILE PIC?
Why wouldn't he just ask Sweetie Bell to use her magic to, i don't know maybe just open the door?
5458157
I've always thought that unicorn magic required great concentration to do tasks beyond floating small objects. Some unicorns aren't as good using magic under pressure. With all the smoke and fire, I can imagine she's have a tough time.
That and with all the structural damage from the fire, magically opening the door might have made everything collapse on their heads.
Ok, the last two chapters hit home. As someone who not only server, (Corporal, USMC 91-95) but also was on Waterville Fire for a while, (resigned for medical reasons) this brings back memories. Maybe sometime, I could tell you about the Riverview St. fire sometime...
This story has earned a place in my Best of the Best shelf.
I do a lot of work with birds of prey. One perched on top of an industrial building and a vent started discharging hot caustic vapours (why that's even legal I don't know). Her beak, scales on her feet and feathers just melted. It was one of the most horrendous things I've ever seen.
Luckily the feathers shielded the living tissue underneath so after being put down to moult she could fly again but her beak took two years to grow out right again. She needed to be hand fed for quite some time.
So I feel for Star step here.
Should "I'm sure the Luna can fix me up" be "I'm sure that Luna can fix me up"?
PS, if I wasn't loving the story I wouldn't bother to bring these up ;)
