He is dismissed from the night guard for assaulting his commanding officer after hearing him talking about how much of a failure he is as a night guard because of his pigment deficiency and orientation. After an accident while being interrogated he leaves Canterlot behind. He searches for a new life somewhere nopony knows him. A quiet little desert town called Apploosa.

Applejack's cousin, Braeburn Apple, writes her a letter for her to come to Appalossa as quickly as possible but it doesn't tell her why. So assuming the worst, she ropes in her friends to come with her as a backup.

When they get there, not only is Braeburn fine, but Soarin is also there too. Why?
