CM: Face the Past, part 3

It didn't take too long for everyone to get Axl back on his feet, with Cinnamon providing the energy for physical repairs while X called in Piano for his Sub Tank to replenish Axl's energy. Once that was finished, Axl got to his feet. "Alright, I'm ready," he confirmed, bracing his scythe on his shoulder as he made his way down the stairs.

"Releasing Control Logic Restriction System level 2," echoed up the stairs towards him, followed by a blaze of light. As Axl arrived, two Tails figures with seven tails each awaited him. "We are Seventails," they greeted calmly. "We challenge you to a fight."

Once again, the pair lunged forward to strike at Axl from both sides as he defended himself, sounding out the strategy. As expected, each used physical blows, piercing blows designed to drain his energy, and heavy attacks that could penetrate his defenses. In addition, their hands were surrounded by a dark aura that his systems recognized as a virus meant to interfere with his servos, limiting his mobility. As before, each could also use the Annihilator Hadoken to inflict devastating damage to the surroundings...and presumably to Axl if they hit, though he was able to evade.

The main difference that became apparent when Axl tried a few probing counterattacks was that each regenerated from damage, and grew stronger in power and defense each time they were hit. It quickly became apparent he needed to husband his strength for a powerful blow...all while dodging their strikes, including their heavy electrical discharges.

Thinking quickly, he leapt out of the direct melee, feinting towards one of them to try and get it to follow him. Luckily enough, it did, pursuing him towards the edge of the chamber in an attempt to trap him against the wall. Axl was quick enough to take advantage, racing up the wall to backflip over the Seventails as it crashed into the wall, letting him land back in the center of the room.

"Annihilator..." the other one spoke up, gathering the energy.

Turning, Axl stared in shock, turning to run straight towards the Seventails he'd tricked into running into the wall.

"Annihilator..." that one began, also gathering the energy.

"Hadoken!" they shouted together, unleashing their attacks.

Axl instantly fazed out with Stealth Mode, letting the two attacks pass harmlessly through him to clash in the middle. much to his surprise, both Seventails maintained the unexpected beam struggle, neither showing any sign of breaking free. "Now isn't that interesting?" Axl murmured as he leapt up to the ceiling, drawing his Axl Bullets and firing, aiming one gun at the foot of one Seventails, the other at the other's head.

As he'd planned, the one shot in the foot leaned forward, while the one shot in the head leaned back. The shift was almost imperceptible, but it was enough for the beams to break the struggle and shoot past each other, slamming into the opposite Seventails and slamming them back against the walls.

As Axl landed, he chugged energy from a Sub Tank for a refresh. "That all you got?" he called out derisively.

"Releasing Control Logic Restriction System to Level One!" the two Seventails called out together in response, blazing with light as each sprouted an additional tail. "We are Eighttails, and we challenge you to a fight!" they proclaimed as they unleashed a barrage of Elemental energy.

Yelping, Axl shifted back into Stealth Mode to evade the attacks, charging in to attack. Much to his relief, these two did not automatically heal damage they took over time, which relieved him as far as the fight. Pacing himself, he focused on avoiding the blows aimed at his head and the tail strikes, trying to wear one down enough he could destroy it and focus on the other one. Eventually, he managed to deliver a finishing blow, causing one to explode.

As he turned towards the other, however, it lifted its arms and another Eighttails appeared in a blaze of light. "Oh, come on!" Axl screamed out irritably as he found himself right back where he started.

Thankfully, he'd managed to learn the pattern of their attacks at that point, and was able to carefully shift between forms to deal with the elemental discharges, and sway to dodge the physical attacks. He focused on spreading the damage between the two, hoping to be able to disable the second one after destroying the first before it could summon a fresh one.

His opportunity arrived as he managed to split one Eighttails right down the middle. The other Eighttails started to raise his arms, but Axl charged in and sliced his arms off. "Can't summon backup now, can you?" he braked out angrily.

The disarmed Eighttails looked at Axl...and grinned. "Release Control Logic Restriction System to Level Zero." The still standing figure and the wreckage of Tails scattered throughout the spiral staircase glowed, flying together. "Maintain power release until one of the combatants is permanently silenced!"

Axl gasped in shock, leaping back as he felt the overwhelming power focused in the tiny chamber. When the light faded, the figure had nine tails and seemed to hover in midair from the sheer force of its power. "I am Ninetails," it declared calmly, its voice barely above a whisper. "My strength is unparalleled." With no further warning than that, he pulled back his hands and fired off an Annihilator Hadoken.

Axl dove to the side, barely evading the blast...only to hear sudden screams of pain. "No!" he screamed out, spinning towards the source.

Massimo, Spider, and Zero all were sunk to their knees, their eyes the blank, dead look of a forced shut down. X, Octavia, Cinnamon, and Marino were behind them, looking like they'd just barely evaded taking the worst of the blast.

Axl rounded angrily on Ninetails. "Bastard!" he roared out, charging in to the attack spinning his scythe.

Ninetails swayed back and forth between the swings before turning his back to Axl. "Nine Fragments!" he proclaimed, lashing out with all nine tails. The first struck Axl's hand, sending the scythe flying. The next four struck at where he stored his guns, smashing some and scattering the others. The remaining four struck Axl in one leg, one arm, and two in the torso, punching holes through his armor and sending him flying back with a scream of pain.

"Axl!" Cinnamon and Octavia screamed out, rushing to his side as Cinnamon immediately started trying to restore the damage.

"Bastard!" X roared out as he activated his Ultimate Armor, ready to go charging in.

Marino beat him to it, charging in with Quicksilver and swiping anything she could off of Ninetails in an attempt to slow him down. When she grabbed one of his tails, however, he spun and caught her by the throat, holding her up between himself and X. "I suggest you stand down," he instructed as the things Marino had managed to seize scattered across the floor.

"Let her go!" Axl roared out. Despite only having two working limbs, he lunged forward, grasping the only weapon in his reach...a gun Marino had dropped after swiping it from Ninetails. It was a long-barreled silver revolver with a black grip and odd plates riveted along the length of the barrel, with strange designs etched into the metal along the sides. Spinning, he leveled the gun and pulled the trigger three times in quick succession.

The first bullet struck Ninetails' wrist, causing it to jerk open and let Marino drop to the ground. The second and third each hit Ninetails in his eyes, making him stagger back clutching at his face.

Axl glowered at Ninetails, wanting more than anything to just blast the smug bastard to oblivion. He found himself focusing all the power he could bring to bear on that thought, even if it was only-

"Five percent," the gun suddenly chimed in a robotic voice. The plates along the barrel burst off, revealing a spinning black circle that sparked with white energy that wasn't quite electricity. When Axl pulled the trigger, the recoil sent him falling back against Cinnamon as a small white sphere shot forward to slam Ninetails in the gut, driving the figure into the opposite wall before erupting in a massive corona of light.

As the light faded, all of Ninetails' tails had vanished, and the figure lay on the ground, unmoving. As Octavia moved to reboot the others, however, something inside Ninetails stirred, and an odd sound was heard.

"...meow..."
