“Shh, Rarity, it’ll be okay.”
Spike gripped the sobbing white mare in his arms, resting his head on hers.
“Oh, Spikey, I just thought that he was the one! H-How could he d-do that?”
Spike could feel her tears start running down his back. She had been crying like this non-stop for the past hour since she showed up at library to talk to him after her date with Caramel.
“Well, if he didn’t respect you, then he wasn’t worth your time anyway, Rarity. You deserve only the best. Not a cheap stallion who cares more about your bed than you.”
Spike held her closer as she nuzzled into his shoulder. It had been like this so many times it seemed. Rarity would go out with a stallion, he would do something to hurt her, and the she would seek out her best friend to cry into. It seemed as if she was just using him at this point.
But he’d be there for her every time.
“Oh, Spike, why can’t I just find a stallion who actually loves me for me?” Rarity pulled away from him and looked him straight in the eyes.
Spike had to resist the powerful urge to facepalm, but she was being serious. Maybe, just maybe, she’d finally give him a chance.
“Well, Rarity, there is someone. Someone who loves you for you, and cares about you more than anything. And you know him very well…”
Rarity opened her mouth to say something, but shut it just as quickly and turned her head away. “Well, um… If I’m correct in my assumption of who you’re talking about, you know my feelings. You know you’re my best friend, darling.”
Spike just frowned in disappointment. It seemed that no matter how well he treated her, it wasn’t enough.
“I understand, Rares.”
Rarity looked down at the ground and back up to Spike. “But, you know, maybe a best friend would also make a nice coltfriend… someday.”
“Someday?” Spike asked, unsure of what he heard.
“Someday. I promise. Just, give me some time, alright dear,” Rarity leaned forward and lightly kissed his cheek, setting his cheeks aflame. “Hehe, nice to know you still care about me just as much as the first time I kissed you all those years ago.”
“Well, I’ll always care for you. Even if I have to wait…”

I hate to say this, but the way this is going, I fear that the friendzone could become the rapezone, and then the permanent-banishment-from-Equestriazone...all because either he's not taking no for an answer, or there is somepony or some creature there that will not friendzone him, but use him for nefarious purposes...
(In laypony terms, he will be played for a fool and a loser--that could really go south very quickly and painfully, also potentially leading to banishment 
)

The Royal guards knocked on Raritys door, As it opened they said "Rarity Belle come with us, On her highnesses orders" They took her away no bags no prior notice ,no nothing. The Royal Rariot flew on to Canterlot Rarity thought 'What am I going to tell my family ,friends everypony , Oh bother...'
She asked "Dear Sir,What is this about?" The Captain replied "By Princess Celestias order you are to wed a ward of a Royal Court."
Rarity gasped "What? How? WHO?" , The captain shrugged " That information I do not have Miss Rarity I do have a Why, Our Kingdom will be at war if this wedding doesn't take place" Rarity asked" WHY ME?" He answered "Princess orders that's all I know" All with the exception of the guard Rarity stood alone. The fate of the kingdom held on those two words 'I DO' . Her life was ruined nothing could prepare her for this. NOTHING. Her Royal gown was flowing as she was escorted down the isle with the force of the guards, Oddly her groom in full armor was also under guard. Under protest the vows were exchanged, The two faced each other ,Her vial & His helmet covering all. "Fillies & Gentle colts I give you the Royal couple Rarity &,,," A roar of applause erupted before Celestia finished, A crying voice echoed from under the knights helmet "A sad day for you & I my lady for I too love another"
The vial & helmet were removed as the two prisoners faced each other ,>) "Oh my gosh RARITY !?!"(< ' Oh my...My SPIKEY WIKEY!?!"
Celestia spoke "We had a little problem with the Dragons?" Or was it the Everfree Forest? DISCORD? TYREK?? Dancing with the stars?
Luna interrupted her sister " Everypony just got tired of you two just beating around the bush" Luna blushed "Now go make some Draconys"

As to the perception of it in this story, it basically implies that one may or may not be aware of the other's feelings, but takes proactive steps to avoid the idea of romance between the two.
I absolutely love Spike. I'm merely writing this because of the ludicrous notion many have of him being just the "failed comic relief" or "the third wheel". He's actually my favourite character by far.

Spike, nothing against you man, but you really need to grow some balls. The vast majority of girls want a guy with some testosterone and a backbone, not a whipping boy. Stand up for yourself, and you'll be surprised how far it'll take you.

Spike's making classical mistakes all friendzoners seem to make; assuming that girls want a servant for a boyfriend.
Yeah. No. There's a reason girls seem to go for assholes and its got nothing to do with them digging being abused, or the guy's lack of personality. Assholes tend to have confidence and are assertive, usually in the extreme and usually take a confrontational approach to problem-solving (not neccessarily aggressive or violent but more approaching problems head on rather than namby-pambying about). You know, trademark, basic masculine traits? You see that submissiveness, supportive no-matter-what-especially-if-they're-in-the-wrong-and/or-being-stupid attitude and always being on hand when they need shit done for them? Yeah, those are great traits for a friend, but fucking terrible if you're looking for someone to be the rock in your life.
A guy who keeps his distance, a guy who seems to have things of his own going on in his life, a guy with confidence is always going to interest women more than the guy who's always in her face. Have those traits and a woman is much more likely to notice you, regardless of wether you're a nice guy or an asshole, its no garauntee of course, nothing is, but it is healthy and increases your chances tenfold. Familiarity breeds contempt and distance makes the heart grow fonder, Spike may have gone through puberty but his balls have yet to drop as it were.
If you want to be their friend, keep doing what you normally do, that's great. If you're looking for something more, change your fucking game, if you can't do that then stop pretending you have the courage to ask women out and get used to the loneliness you are confining yourself to. Because if your whining, pitiful methods eventually succeed, you aren't just locking yourself but the girl into a needy, unhealthy relationship.

4886646 It implies that it is the ladies fault, that just because they guy was NICE to her, she HAS to go out with him. I understand, this isn't always the case, but from what I have seen, heard, and read about it, that is the usual case. The guy then proceeds to complain, and the girl is called a prude, or other insults.
Like I said, that isn't always the case, and I think it is happening less often now. Girls don't have to date a guy because he was nice. And if you teach a guy to be nice to a girl JUST to get into her pants, or date her? Well shame on that person! Genders should be nice to each other out of decency!

You're right, that's one possible interpretation. I can't help but feel that there's been some change in it since it was first used when I was in college more than a decade ago, though. It seems like, once upon a time in the ancient 2000's, it was a reference to two friends and one of them starting to feel new feelings toward the other, and the other being oblivious/afraid/unwilling to go with the new situation.
I guess my feeling is that, for someone to be stuck in a "friendzone," they had to be friends to start with. The "new" and "internet" definition of portraying the guy as some kind of sexual predator who is only being nice to a girl for sex is disgusting to me, and not in keeping with the "real life" issues that arise when such a thing happens... and believe me, they can happen.

I know the friendzone all too well, and I mean really getting friendzoned. I even once had a girl choose another girl over me. If that wasn't a kick to the balls, then nothing is.
You know in terms of "friend zoned" the whole punch in the gut scenarios aren't as mean or messed up. Like the ladies still hang with him and all that jazz.
