Dim exists because there are people who should not be safe, no matter how many armies and vaults they have. Without someone like Dim, people like Truffe get away with anything and everything at the cost of nothing. A single being, whom anyone could kill easily, untouchable and invincible because of the expectations and rules of society that sway heavily in their favor, more like a corrupted divine than a person.
The poor have no armies, no vaults, and often need protecting from those who do. The poor are never safe no matter what they do, be it from a random guard or a demigod terror. It makes no difference either way, so why worry?
The important part is to be able to take down those of such ken who do lose their way, or never had it to begin with. Those tend to be the gods, usually. The ultimate "No, stop that." hovering above those who forsake all strictures to cause evil, because people often forget that Good only follows the rules so long as it's beneficial to the innocent, and Good unleashed is no less terrifying than Evil.

Yep, this chapter was a really entertaining read.
This world needs a couple Dim's
Martinet is well within his rights to shit his britches about Dim, but on the other hand it also means that anyone and anything CAN be killed. The duc was a monster but without Dim or another great equalizer so many more lives would have been lost trying to stop him. Its terrifying to think that no matter what YOU cant truly be safe, but neither can anyone else. Brings a sense of equality, no matter how minute, that nobody is safe from Lord Death of Murder Mountain. Kinda like how everyone dies in the end, regardless of their standing.
The "fathers worry" way of governing will do good to get Fancy back on its feet, but hell hath no fury like a protective father. Whats to say he doesn't lose it and start a war later down the line because his daughter starts dating?
Also its good to see Dim isn't a kid-killer. Good chapter.
Dims reaction was quite Mature, though i would have thought that he would have had some kind of reply....
Now if somehow the foals can be raised without the knowledge of who their father was, this could work out quite well.

Or maybe, they know exactly who their father is and why he died. And if they are lucky, they learn from this. It leaves an impression on them and they try to do some good to make up for their father's misdeeds.
Or, you know, one day Dim is out and about in the Crystal Empire and some pony comes along and has the worst questions to ask.

The very fact that Martinet fears how unbelievably impotent Dim rendered even the tightest security most would and could use, and his lines about "who polices Dim and his ilk" shows me two things not said about Martinet.
1) He clearly knows nothing of Starlight Glimmer, Moondancer, Twilight fronking Sparkle, and other insanely knowledgeable unicorn grads from Celestia's School. And clearly knows not of the Darks at all.
2) Mayhap Martinet has something to hide in some forgotten vault, in his secluded manor/tower/etc., behind a private army that he does not wish to see the light of Celestia's sun, hmm?
The "who watches the watchers" sentiment immediately smacks of "I'm a sneaky and crooked asshole looking to discredit the biggest threat to my own dirty dealings" to me. Sorry to say, but many nobles and high-ranked officers take liberties that they feel they are "permitted" by virtue of thwir positions.
I'm actually surprised a bit that a well traveled fellow like Martinet was actually surprised that someone like Dim exists. After all it's not like there's a pair of ponies out there that can move the sun and moon or artifacts that allow one creature the power of a small army. He lives in a literal high fantasy world, and acts what for us would be amazing, are nothing but recent world history.

Disclosure. Martinet's motivations are simple. He's a soldier. He keeps others safe. He cannot figure out how to keep common ponies safe from those like Dim, and as such, as this is a problem with no solution, Martinet believes that ponies like Dim should not exist. If Martinet had his way, powerful magic users would be put down for the public good. Which leads to a whole slew of problems.

There is no way to keep common ponies safe if he's using that viewpoint, though. If Martinet surrounded all the common ponies with soldiers, what happens if the soldiers aren't good people/take orders from someone else? What happens if Martinet goes bad? Who protects the common ponies from an evil Martinet?
Is he an introspective, philosophical man, or more of a roughneck who hasn't considered that anyone with any amount of power (personal/magical/authority) is someone who is a potential threat if you get right down to it? That perhaps even he is as much of a threat to the public as someone like Dim.
9057943
He's a career soldier. His motivations, as stated, are the public good. He's really quite simple, as far as character motivations go.
9057972
Works for me. He's not the sort to sit and puzzle over the nature of power and those who wield it, then. Ironically, while also being a very powerful individual himself. Fits perfectly in the flaws of the common man.
Who projects the world from ponies like Dim? Love and Friendship.

The friendship... IT BURNS! ARGH!
