Synopsis
A traveller to a beleaguered merchant city becomes involved in a strange plot when his curiosity takes the better of him. What mysteries lie behind the lit window of the Tower of the West?

Story Notes
The story is based in an era several hundred years before the MLP:FiM episodes, at a time when Luna was still locked on the moon and Celestia had a very hands-off approach to governing the country. Equestria is finding its hooves, slowly modernising itself, and pushing at the edges of its boundaries. The tension between it and its neighbouring countries has started to come to a head, particularly on the borders with the Gryffon Kingdom. All out war is inevitable.

Author's Notes
This is a short story; part of a potential series based around a character who travels from place to place as a soldier of fortune. This particular story is a test piece designed to see if the concept works as part of the ponyverse, and as such the underlying tale borrows from stories about events around Europe in the 1900s. The series, whilst set in an arena of war and strife does not focus specifically on the violence (although there is some), but rather on the way that our main character manages to appear somewhere as a mere observer, yet polarises events to such an extent that outcomes and destinies have been changed by the time he leaves.

I'd hate to find out it was really last Thursday. Ha! But seriously, folks. I've been doing a fair bit of thinking about our fair Canterlot, and I've realized it isn't just somewhere we all live. It's what we build together into something greater as we all reach for the moon. A symbol for a way of life and a state of mind. So, in honor of the thousand years, I'm taking an eye in the sky peek into the lives of the ponies on the streets, and a few in the penthouses too. I don't often do real news on this show, but these are some genuine equine interest stories, folks. In their own small, unique way, these ponies are as vital to the city as the princess of the night herself. So settle down, get comfortable, and don't touch that dial.

With a powerful artifact on their side, a group of rebels has sealed Celestia in her palace and stripped her of the majority of her powers. As the last of her guards fall, she hears the pounding on the throne room doors and knows the end is coming soon...

With her organizational skills and keen understanding of scientific principles, she leads diplomats and scientists in a well-planned expedition to a historic first contact.

The first exchange doesn't quite go without a hitch, however, as the portal opens near a pony ranch at Texas, Earth.

For the purposes of this fic, assume Equestria Girls didn't happen.

The Everfree forest is just like any other forest—except it's full of monsters and weird magic junk, but ignoring that—it sometimes grows out of control and needs to be trimmed a bit. In order to keep the forest from growing too large, Celestia asks Twilight to start a controlled forest fire to burn a portion of it down. It seems like a simple request, but a series of mishaps and misunderstandings lead to some miscommunication and, subsequently, to Twilight setting fire to all of Equestria.

This story is a chronological sequel to It always begins with a Book, it is NOT required to undertstand this story.

When Twilight Sparkle slipped beneath the covers last night, everything had been fine. She had friends whom she loved, a teacher she adored, and a bright future ahead of her. But when she woke up, her blankets and quilts had been replaced by hospital gowns and padded restraints.

Everything is wrong and nothing makes sense; even her friends have changed. The doctors keep telling her that she is sick, that none of it was real and that it was all in her head. Yet she remembers a life far beyond the hospital walls. She couldn't have made it all up on her own. They must be lying… right?
