Seems like a nice introduction. Good that you got away from fandom impression of Lyra and made your own personality of her. Admittingly
the dialogue is a little bit stale, but different. It shall be interesting as the story progresses.

I thought of something like this in my upcoming story as well. Maybe humans react completely different to the equestrian enviroment. Ponies react normal and use magic, earn cutie marks. There are fics out there where even humans earn cutie marks, but maybe even these simple things for ponies might cause violent transformations for humans. Not like *POOF* and the cutie mark is there... What if it will be a painful, gory moment that is traumatizing for the human?

Thing is we don't have magic in our world. maybe chronic and sustained exploring in our world might do the same to ponies since we have electric smog, radio signals left and right and bombard the planet with sattelite signals. Come to think of it, this miight affect unicorns the most since their magic might diminish among all this technological filth in the air. Or it might cause their magic to go random. You want to get a spell out to hold a cup of tea and instead you fire lasers or the flower pot explodes as the flower gets huge. You know stuff that could happen. Or just imagine Celestia comes to our world and messing with the Solar system or merely the Earth's rotation to set the sun right. Or Luna pulling the moon into place. Oh, the tidal waves...

The part about there being only a thousand or so ponies seems odd. Considering the number of towns and cities on the official map, including four that appear to have some number of skyscrapers, I'd think hundreds of thousands or even millions would be more accurate.
