Yep, how silly of me to comment before reading the actual thing.
Now, I have to admit, this one is written quite well. As expected from the guy. The initial fighting scene, the XO exposition, the characters themselves... I think that one of AP's greatest gifts in writing is that he can make the reader see the bright beams of light of the vast personalities behind his characters from the very beginning of each story, and then develop the plot and the characters themselves in such a way that the beams turn out to be the prophets of the radiating sunrise in our hearts.

I don't like fics where humans are outplayed by Celestia, because that segment about the EQs getting what they want over the humans was bull. Also, Celestia hunting people in another country sounds shifty, surely illegal.

Start a war with a plane of existence with a single way in or out of that needs the consent and power of the ponies in the other place to maintain, again, guarded by a PAIR of godlike creature, where nothing more advanced than a flashlight works? This is of course ignoring if any kingdoms allied with Celestia wouldn't come to her aid at a time of war, so your not just fighting Equestria but potentially an entire worlds military might.
As for less violent means, what, Impose tariffs or a trade embargo with a place they don't do trade with yet? Give a stern talking to on the international community? It undoubtedly pissed China off, but I imagine there aren't THAT many solutions they could do about it, other than refuse trade or business with Equestria, which would leave them out of what would essentially be an economic gold rush for a until now untapped trade resource of a planetary scale that could change the economic powers. With the ponies help any third world barren country could become wealthy by way of turning into a exotic agricultural farmland by magic, or any of the other uses of it. China saying they want no part of this would be suicidally stupid for them in politics and economics.
Thats STILL if China even acknowledged this publicly, considering they used mercenaries and the whole mess never officially happened, they wouldn't really have grounds for negative repercussions anyway. China probably grumbled, distanced themselves from the mercenaries as best they could manage, declared they had no knowledge of their actions and didn't sanction it, and left the kidnappers to the wolves.

Also, thanks for the use of the Starlight scope. My dad had told me about those when he was in during Vietnam. He never went to 'Nam, instead he was sent to Germany, but he said that they were all taught the basics of how to use them. It was the actual snipers that got the in depth training on them.

Eh, mostly comes from a passive knowledge of how foreign relations work. Terry Pratchett was a big help to grasping such concepts when I was young. His stories conveyed politics, city function, law, war etc in a way that was easier for a teenage mind to understand....and were just in general hilarious and filled with Dwarves and Trolls and such. I'm not an expert by any means, but the statement I made seems like the most obvious outcome to Celestia coming in person and beating the snot out of a rogue (If only officially) military division which kidnapped her citizens.
For his take on War and Foreign Politics I'd recommend Jingo, which is about a island that appears between the nations of Anth-Morpork and Klatch and the two are at the brink of war for claiming the island for their country. As well as to a lesser extent, The Fifth Elephant, where Commander Vimes of the Watch is caught in the politics of a neighboring kingdom of Dwarves electing a new king.

Maybe it's just me stereotyping, seeing how I'm not familiar with this particular version of Equestria yet and don't really have any canon information on them either, but -- sleeping at night, having trouble seeing in the dark, getting all cold and shivery on top of a mountain despite being a natural flier (who I'd imagine would be either be naturally adapted to those sorts of temperatures or else at least know how to prepare for them)? Not exactly traits I'd immediately associate with a bat pony at all, let alone a supposedly professional military one.
It's not that I don't like the characters or don't want to find out where the story is going next, but those bits did kind of jump out at me.
