My bets are on Devon's mother is a night pony. Having panic attacks might not be a guarantee but it fits the night pony profile. Her being a night pony would also explain why she hasn't run into Devon during the day. And if she was a night pony she might not have any of her possessions including her phone because they are all known to have been recruited into the Enclave and pretty much took off from their homes early on.
Here is a disturbing thought: because of Tonya’s mind magic, Sunset Blessing reverted to bisexuality, Number Crunch killed Swift Strike, and now Paul was forced to accept his family.
Considering how long Tonya has had this magic and how much she affected people and ponies consciously and unconsciously, it is entirely possible that Phobia Remedy identified as transgender and became a mare BECAUSE of Tonya.
two chapter that have every thing changing some ways big some vary small.
i am watching to see how this all plays out.
It looks like shimmerists were all people who had a hatred for another people. The transformation changed the target of the hatred towards what Sunset Shimmer wanted,
Also Phobia has to learn to get her mom to shut up or stop her from visiting. She is going to have foals soon and you never want a racist bigot to be around impressionable children.
It seems of note that, so far, most of Tonya's "victims" of mind magic (whether willing or not) seem to be prone to fits of extreme anger after the fact. Sunset Blessing needs no example, Number Crunch is enraged almost at the mention of her (though we haven't heard her whole story yet), and now Paul became so angry at Phobia, he sent her into a panic attack. It might be coincidence- most of these are very justifiable to be angry at- but I can't help but think there might be a little more going on.

I was still skeptical about phobia being transgender and would not be surprised if Tonya was the reason that it was either forced or amplified by her.

I think there's evidence that Phobia was going to become a mare before she spoke to Tonya about it. It's a small detail early on in the first story, but her nipples migrated lower on her body. Stallions on earth don't have nipples or teats like human males do. If she was transforming into a stallion I think they might have just disappeared rather than migrate. Plus, both Swift Strike and Rosetta picked up a mare scent off her before that talk.
I do like how Luna is portrayed and how she seeks to take Sunset down a peg or two whenever she can.
That said, I just had a very interesting thought about what Tonya did to help set things straight with Devon and Paul: Isn't that sort of the same thing that Candance can do? I seem to recall the one (and I think only) time I saw her use her power. She zapped a quarrelling couple with her magic and they were all back to being affectionate again.
Would be interesting if anyone in the story knew about that and could use it in Tonya's defense.

There were significant events in Matthew's, now Phobia's, upbringing that indicate she was never fully comfortable identifying as male. I think it's chapter 5 in 'what you are meant to be,' where Charlotte, now Sunset, admits to a lot of things that happened in Phobia's childhood that reaffirm this transition to be a natural function of Shimmer's spell on Phobia's ressonance. It seems possible bit unlikely that Tonya had any effect on this. I personally like to think that Phobia's resonance always communicated a female form, even if non magical beings couldn't see it.

Wouldn't it be fun if Devon's mother was that one pony that Phobia mentioned she had to discipline on her first night as dreamwarden?
Given the rush of other events, it's understandable that none of the characters seem to be giving even a moment's thought to Shadow Dancer's trial, except for some of the judges risking their lives to get ready to impose a sentence. But I think it's still a mistake to ignore the fact that Shadow Dancer will be the very first night pony the Dream Warden's try. Given that he is the first, his trial will be probably be remembered and studied for a very long time. I think it's imperative that the Dream Warden's conduct be exemplary in this respect. Shadow Dancer must be seen to have gotten a completely fair trial. There must be no reason for future historians to doubt he got treated justly. And yet, no pony has apparently even given a moment's thought to getting him a competent defence lawyer, much less doing some basic research by talking to any of the humans he is accused of mentally influencing, most of whom won't even be arriving in Riverview for weeks. Has it occurred to anyone that when Shadow Dancer bragged about having 5000 human converts, he may have been greatly exaggerating his own accomplishments? He probably hasn't had the time to talk personally with 5000 people, so many if not all of those people have probably just attended some rallies where he worked up the crowd in much the same way Tonia did when she got the townspeople to sing. Shadow Dancer's trial really should be delayed to give both sides a chance to prepare for what will likely be regarded as the single most important foundational case in Earth night pony law. Perhaps Luna could point this out to Phobia?

Thanks for the feedback. I understand that the night ponies (or Dreamwardens as I'm sure more people are concerned about rather than night ponies) have taken up a lot of time as of late. While they will still be a very major part of the remainder of part 1 (primarily due to the two trials) the Dreamwarden lore is largely done being fleshed out. I spent more time making sure it was fleshed out than I would have originally preferred, but it was a necessity--not only for story purposes but overall pandemic universe purposes as well.
Part 2 (when it comes around) is going to have little to do with the night ponies beyond regular interpersonal relationships, with the Dreamwardens moving largely to the background. Night ponies who appear will be dealing with more of the interpersonal and family issues again, you'll see Phobia the mother not Phobia the Dreamwarden on display for example (she's still clearly a Dreamwarden but that doesn't have bearing on the overall story like it does in part 1). Part 2 is set six years later (I was originally going five years later but after reexamining things I think six is better) and there will be a lot of changes in character's lives in that time as well as seeing what type of city Riverview had become. There will be of course a new central challenge, but it will take a little while to be revealed and for it to build into a full on danger.
I'm loving this story, really. Just one common mistake so far...
That should be 'your', which means 'belongs to you'; not 'you're', which means 'you are'.
Considering I made the same mistake a few times before I got it right, it's easy to do.

Thanks, going back and correcting that. I actually catch a lot of these on preread but not all of them. When I'm writing I tend to let my fingers just move and there's no telling which of your/you're will initially appear and the same for their/they're. I try to catch them all on quick review, but inevitably miss a number of them.

I know the feeling. I've spotted mistakes in my stories months after reading and re-reading them and posting them. Sometimes they're the simplest of errors. 'Its' and 'it's' is my biggest bugbear at the moment; I'm having to re-edit all of everything I've posted and correct them for this one little grammar mistake...

My current explaination on Cadance is that she did things like that as a teen...which is also while Luna was banished to the moon. Luna was therefore unaware of Cadance's actions at the time, and no night pony was particularly interested in telling her about them. When Luna returned she would have stepped up and put her hoof down on Cadance's actions of doing this without consent but wouldn't have called for punishment because it was done in ignorance of the rules and it had no malicious intent. Basically Cadance got a warning.
In the case of Starlight's use of mind magic Luna was satisfied that Twilight dealt with the issue by the time Luna even learned of it and felt no need to get involved. Starlight would never even have realized there was the possible wrath of Luna to contend with.
Tonya at the point she did her mind magic on her brother and Devon was aware of the rules. It may have been an accident, but she was aware of the rules at that point. It is important to note that even though she was going to be tried for this (and still technically is as a secondary crime) it was expected originally to essentially add up to a slap on the wrist with a stern warning of "get this under control or we won't be so nice in the future." The major issue remains Number Crunch which was malicious in intent.
