Equestria is in a post modern age, and half of this world is plunged into war. Most days are spend avoiding aerial attacks, and the skies are gloomy, and there is no laughter on the dirty gray streets. Thunderlane's life as a Pegasus in the clouds is ruined when Cloudsdale is destroyed, and he is forced to leave for the streets of Baltimare.

Here he finds a new life with the ponies of a bar known infamously as Haystring Blue. It's the one place cheer is spread with a passion for rock and roll, but it is also the one place Hoity Toity is convinced he will have taken down, if it is the last thing he does.

There was nothing left for Spitfire in Cloudsdale, just an uncle who hated her and painful memories of lost loved ones. The Pegasus Search and Rescue Corps offers her a chance to get out of town, see the world, do some good - and one day maybe have a shot at the Guards or the Wonderbolts! She jumps at the opportunity - and six days later, she limps into training camp.

Doesn't matter: she made it. The world can beat her down, but it can't keep her down. The friendships she forms here will get her through everything training has to offer. Will they also see her through the dark clouds on the horizon?

While struggling to get her magic act afloat again, Trixie finds herself filling in behind a bar in Manehattan, to work off a rented room upstairs. That night, just before closing time, she encounters journalist and adventure novelist Ember Roundup, who reveals that she has been trying to track her down for over a year, since the death of her best friend and writing partner - Trixie's cousin Gusty - as it seems Ember has a significant debt to repay...
