I say this is the best story when Rainbow and Soarin' are already in a stable relationship and there's nothing live-threatning going on. Just seeing their everyday life is interesting enough because they're so well fleshed out and in-character.
Rainbow's the best of course. That's EXACTLY how her relationship with any stallion would've turned out. There's just something so lovely about a wife that is sweet, caring and passionate but also can turn into a weapon of mass and total anihilation when needen. So a total tsundere
In fact their normal activities are so well-written that I can't wait to see it more along the way (or maybe in some flashbacks again) with a just a right amount of double entendre (heh they're married after all) to make it cute.

I don't know who the father is. I wanted one of them to be an alicorn so I could use that as a plot device later (for comedy in some cases, in others it creates conflict) and I needed to make up some information about the father to help explain his... behavior.

1596808 .... I knew it! In this continuity, alicorns are rare crossbreeds! NOT different species! Good thing too. means OP justification justwent out the window and plummeted to a grisly death! Hooray!
All of the canon alicorns are female; two are ruling the country while another is already married. Celestia also scheduled Capricorn's father's lunch to be with his son. That said, Capricorn is also implied to be a royal, and the only male royal we've seen in canon is Blueblood (plus Shining Armor, but he married into it, which simultaneously takes him out of the running as Capricorn's father).
So either we've got an OC alicorn working interrogation for Celestia, or Capricorn is the result of a union between a unicorn (Capricorn's father is casting spells) and a pegasus.
There's really no reason for a slice of life story like this to be bringing in random OC alicorns. Barring random OCs, the only reason pegasus+unicorn should produce an alicorn is if the unicorn is Blueblood (on the assumption that his royal blood means there's an alicorn in his family line). With the personalities presented in A Day With Dad and thus far in this fic (which have been well-done and line up well with canon), I see no reason for Fluttershy to be paired with Blueblood at all. (Besides, the description of Capricorn's father's behavior do not match Blueblood.)
That leaves either random OC, or the spontaneous production of an alicorn colt for no apparent reason at all. Neither of those possibilities look good to me. I hope I'm wrong, because I really liked A Day With Dad, but Capricorn's mere existence looks like the downfall of this fic for me.
Edit: Another possibility is that Capricorn isn't Fluttershy's foal and she just serves as long-term foalsitter (implying he's Cadence's foal). If that's the case, the chapter needs some re-writing as the heavy implication that Capricorn belongs to Fluttershy leads to reasoning like my own above, which can result in a turn-off, like it has for me.
I'm willing to give you a chance because I loved the previous story, but I'll say if this had been my first story of yours that I'd read, this chapter would have resulted in thumbs down and unfavorite.

Time for responses!
The category 'Slice of Life' means just an average day (or as average as you can get with these characters). There's no great adventure, no villain to be defeated, no deaths, no magic duels or anything. It's a story about character interaction.
Onto your concerns about Capricorn:
Did I foresee people complaining about him being an alicorn? Yes of course I did. One of the biggest downfalls of many fics is making some overpowered alicorn OC that ends up being a mary-sue. That being said, I am a person of genetics and believe a pairing of a unicorn and pegasus on the rare occasion could produce a mutation where both alleles for wings and a horn are representative in the phenotype.
I personally feel like my writing skills can overcome the 'OC alicorn' hurdle simply because Capricorn is an extremely flawed character. He's not overpowered, not the main character, not some emo 'give me sympathy, everyone hates me for having wings and a horn' character that I'm trying to shove down people's throats. He's a plot device that drives certain character interactions that wouldn't realistically happen without him, and some of these (as I hope you'll read later) require him having both wings and a horn. I considered at one point simply making him a unicorn, but there are two scenes in particular I can think of where he would need wings to avoid making descriptions overly complicated.
I can guarantee you that Blueblood is not the father, but keep an open mind when I say even I don't know who the father is. Canonically, Blueblood is a distant relative of Celestia (as Cadance would also be simply due to the age difference), and such an ancient lineage would be bound to be a bit expansive. I couldn't think of a character with a job and personality (other than Shining Armor, who is already married) that would be compatible with Fluttershy, so I simply described what his job would be to help explain why Capricorn has a very twisted sense of justice.
The whole Canonical argument is invalid; MLP:FiM will most likely NEVER have any of the main 6 characters get into a romantic relationship, unless it's a series finale or future episode.

My issue isn't the assumption of Mary Sue-ness; I think you're a better writer than that. My problem is that alicorns, as a breed, are so rare that we've seen exactly four (An alicorn filly appears in Lesson Zero, but that's in Twilight's imagination when she's horrified by the prospect of being sent back to Magic Kindergarten. It's also likely an animation error.). In fact, Faust didn't even want a third; Celestia and Luna were supposed to be the only winged unicorns when she was writing it up.
Based on the Cake twins, honestly, either Mrs. Cake is a cheating b
h or the breed of the parents is not the direct cause of the breed of the children (Mr Cake's explanation is not convincing in the least). While that might be an even better reason for 'normal' ponies to birth an alicorn, I'd say that the lack of alicorns being born over the course of at least a thousand years (possibly excepting Cadence, we don't really know how old she is) makes that possibility slim. The chance is so low that, even if it's possible, such a child should rightly be the center of media attention for decades. Ponies would naturally assume the foal belongs to one of the existing alicorns (who rule the country and control celestial bodies, I might add), reporters would swamp the foal and his caretakers daily (you think Blitz had it bad?), underhanded scallywags would force the foal to require a guard detail... there's a lot of world-building that goes into such a rare birth. Beyond what other ponies would do, the Princesses would likely want to make the foal a ward of the crown, which would mean he'd be moving to Canterlot, not living by a dangerous forest near Ponyville and teleporting to Canterlot for lunch.
If the setting had alicorns as a relatively common occurrence, I'd let this go... but the world you're basing the story on does not indicate such (in fact it indicates the opposite), and you've done no world-building to change that fact. "Suddenly, a wild alicorn appeared!" is sort of how you've left Capricorn, and it's nowhere near the quality of the rest of your work. I mean, is there truly a reason why Capricorn needs to be an alicorn? The bullies seem to be wary of him because of his parent(s) more than his nature, so why is he an alicorn in the first place?
Also, admitting you don't know who Capricorn's father is in the comments of a chapter where you talk about him at length just looks bad.
(It might be different if Capricorn's father had left Fluttershy and Capricorn never knew him, but the colt has lunch with the guy on a regular basis.) You've introduced a relationship that doesn't exist in canon; even if it's not the focus of the story, you should at least know who the two ponies are! (Even if it's an OC, know something about the character.)

Celestia, Luna, and Cadance are the only three that have made an appearance, and despite what Faust's intentions were, Hasbro made Cadance an alicorn. Despite the presence of a horn and wings, she doesn't appear to be godly (as is the case with Luna and Celestia), so there's always the chance she's in a different category of alicorn (god mode vs. 'hey, that one was born with wings and a horn'). We don't really know much about the canonical MLP world, so who is to say they're the only three? As for the media attention, I thought about that long before I started actually writing the story, and that will be explained as well. Let's just say there's a reason they leave him alone, and leave it at that for now.
For him 'needing' to be an alicorn, my reasons aren't really as cosmic as you may hope, but I really just needed one of the characters to be able to fly AND do magic.
As for the father existing and not existing, that's not a concept I made up. Plenty of stories/shows have descriptions of a relationship between two characters where one of the characters is never shown on screen. The whole point of even bringing up his father was to show that Capricorn has the one thing Blitz really wants and needs: a strong relationship with both parents where they have gone out of there way to spend time with him. I have introduced a lot of relationships in my stories that aren't canon; all pairings between the mane 6 and others are not canonical.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, let me worry about the details (but I do thank you for pointing out your concerns, even if they are obvious and I have thought about them already), calm your tits, and enjoy the story and characters as they develope

There's a difference between having a character never appear 'on-screen', and not knowing who the character is, I think. There's different levels of how much an author ought to know about individual characters in their story, but flat out not knowing who you've shipped with Fluttershy (especially with a foal involved) just sounds completely alien to me.

There is nothing more dangerous than a canonxOC ship. Based off of her personality (satire on a Disney princess), I had an idea on what kind of character I wanted to ship her with, but unfortunately the only one that exists, as I stated, is already married. I was already taking a risk with Capricorn, and creating another controversial OC would have been pushing my luck too far (though based on the like to dislike ratio, most people don't have complains about Capricorn). Better to give some detail and let you (the reader) infer what kind of pony you think he is than for me to force a shipped OC down your throat.
I do have plans concerning Cappy's avoidance of the media, and it helps explain his relationship with the bully in a believable way. I won't say anything more on the topic (spoilers), but hopefully you trust me enough to know I'd never let this story come crashing down because of a lapse of logic.
