For about two weeks, Rainbow Dash has not been paying any attention to Scootaloo; even avoiding her, or so the orange filly thinks. Scootaloo feels as if she is not wanted and or that she is not good enough for the blue pegasus. She goes on a journey of self discovery, hoping... praying... that what she believes to be true is just a misunderstanding. On this soul searching journey she finds that things are better than she could have ever imagined. And worse.

Princess Celestia has called Twilight Sparkle and her friend Rainbow Dash to meet her in at the castle. Unsure of why they are the only ones called to there they make haste for Canterlot. What must she tell them that the rest of their friends don't get to hear? How might this change their outlook on their ways of life? And how will they react when they hear the knews? Her travels having brought her and her friends to the far-north city of Frostvale, Trixie finds herself caught up in a looming war and a dangerous plot. Still just trying to recover, she decides to lay low for a bit and wait for an opening to continue her journey.

Meanwhile, Twilight and friends continue following the trail Trixie left behind on her way north. By a combination of her letters, and the ponies they meet, they follow in her hoofsteps, discovering a number of surprising secrets along the way.

Ponyville is experiencing a rash of insanity. The stranger thing is: only the bearers of the Elements of Harmony seem to be affected. After learning of her faithful student's willing incarceration within the Institute for Not Sane Ponies, Princess Celestia hires the best detective duo Equestria has seen in over five hundred years.
