Halloween. The night He came home. This is it people, the big one. We are looking at a movie that essentially invented the slasher film. If you watch a movie in which an unstoppable, implacable man murders you people, it exists because of this film.
We have here another adaptation of Clive Barker’s work, this one of his short story The Midnight Meat Train which can be found in The Books of Blood anthology which I highly recommend.
This movie begins as Tarantino-esque crime drama. Horrific brutality interspersed with pop culture references and bits of dark humor. We meet up with the Gecko Brothers, Seth (played by George Clooney) and Richard (played by Quentin Tarantino) are pair of career criminals on the run after a brutal bank robbery gone horribly wrong.
One day in the seventies or eighties a group of friends or just a man and his girlfriend took a trip out to a little cabin in the woods. Here they found a book, Necronomicon Ex Mortis, roughly translated Book of the Dead. A passage read from it calls up terrible demons which possess the living, turning them into undead horrors bent on death, pain and soul swallowing.
There are many parts of Lovecraft’s work that I dislike (his almost comically fearful racism, his general misanthropy,) and disagree with. For instance: The concept of Things Man was Not Meant To Know.
Lovecraft watched the dawn of modern science with absolute terror; certain it would reveal nightmares that obliterate the collective sanity of all humanity. He wrote with absolute conviction that it would plunge us all into nihilistic truth that would devour the very soul of our species.
David Cronneburg’s vision of the Fly is a textbook example of how you should do a remake. Of course it helps that the original version is a very simple story in and of itself.
Here it is folks, one of the fucking big ones. Nightmare on Elm Street is one of those films often listed alongside Friday the 13th as defining the slasher movie, and yet I feel the series has a very, very different villain than most slasher films.
Here is the sort of movie Re-Animator is: The opening scene has a man’s eyeballs exploding, squirting blood onto a screaming elderly matron.

This is one of my favorite movies by one of my favorite directors, David motherfucking Cronnenburg.
