31 Nightmares: Season of the Witch · 3:33am Oct 31st, 2014
John Carpenter’s original concept for the Halloween series was as a sort of annual horror anthology series, each film dealing with an entirely separate story linked only by the holiday itself. Personally I wish this was what we got because Halloween III: Season of the Witch is honestly my favorite in the series aside from the original film.
Here is a small insight into my character for you all, if you want to make me gleefully, giddily in love with something, make it as fucking weird as possible, and Season of the Witch is certainly a weird fucking movie.
Daniel Challis is a divorced, alcoholic doctor who eight days before Halloween is called in to see to a man clutching a mask and with a cryptic warning. “They’re all going to kill us.”
After the man is murdered Daniel finds himself drawn into a strange and sinister plot that involves a stolen piece of Stonehenge, druid built robots, and the masks made by a toy company called Silver Shamrock.
It is impossible to really forget the jingle used by the evil corporation in the movie, and I find it darkly amusing that every adult in the film finds it as annoying as the audience does. What really makes this movie amazing though, is the villain.
Cochran is one part smiling old toymaker, one part sleazy corporate big wig and one part sinister old school prankster. Why has he embarked on his mad plan? Partially because he wants a big, bloody sacrifice like in the old days, and mostly because he thinks it would be funny.
I can’t and won’t promise that you’ll love this movie. It’s strange and if Halloween to you means Michael Myers then you probably won’t. Still, it holds a special place in my black heart and I’d feel remise in not mentioning it.
Tomorrow we close out the month with one last film. Tomorrow is Halloween. The night He came home.
Well, I think it's fairly easy to figure out what comes tomorrow.
