31 Nightmares: Evil Dead · 5:18am Oct 28th, 2014
One day in the seventies or eighties a group of friends or just a man and his girlfriend took a trip out to a little cabin in the woods. Here they found a book, Necronomicon Ex Mortis, roughly translated Book of the Dead. A passage read from it calls up terrible demons which possess the living, turning them into undead horrors bent on death, pain and soul swallowing.
Evil Dead is very obviously someone’s first film. There are plenty of cracks showing, and yet there is something special to be found in every gory, chaotic scene.
Fortunately Sam Raimi was able to make the movie again but far better with Evil Dead II. Evil Dead II cuts way down on the extraneous cast, with the initial arrivals in the cabin being cut down to two people, Ashley Williams and his girlfriend Linda. When she succumbs to the deadites it actually turns into a different sort of horror movie for a moment, one about a man’s descent into madness after doing something terrible in an awful situation.
Then he hacks his hand off with a chainsaw and shit gets fucking awesome really fucking quick.
Bruce Campbell is the greatest B-Actor still with us, magnificently hammy with a chin like the fall of communism. I don’t even know what that means but it’s still right goddamn it!
The film is filled with wonderful splattery madness, a gory bloodbath that must be seen to be believed. The viscera comes in green, red, blue and black and demons get dismembered left and right with wild abandon.
Fun fact: There was actually a PG cut of the film made for TV, but it was never used because the film actually comes across way more violent and horrific with the splatter cut down.
Evil Dead II ends in a truly memorable fashion, perfectly setting up the sequel, Army of Darkness.
Army of Darkness begins with Ash now stranded back in time and is a VERY different film from the first two. It is more of an adventure than a horror movie, action packed and full of quotable quips.
Finally, we will end with a discussion of the recent remake.
The film was met with a mixed reception on release. Personally I enjoyed it quite a bit, it hit all the right ultra violent notes, and has some pretty decent writing and atmosphere in it.
Tomorrow we’re going on another little road trip, this time south of the border. Be careful, our companions are somewhat less that gentlemen…
South of the...*GASP*

And I was kinda grossed out when the stripper put her foot in the creep's mouth.
Is the PG cut still available? I like implied gore.
2561872 I've never been able to find it.
2560101 Quentin Tarantino and his foot fetish, god he makes movies uncomfortable sometimes. I should really start a petition to get him to stop playing rapists.
