Ok, to be totally honest this one is me cheaping out big time and just going with a film that really, really panders to my tastes.

Its got an imminent magical apocalypse, some fucking awesomely freaky gore effects, zombies, Lovecraft references and drips with that good ole grindhouse style.

There is a trope often seen in horror, one likely older than written language. That trope amounts to this: STAY THE FUCK ON THE BEATEN PATH BECAUSE HOLY SHIT WILL YOU BE MURDERED IF YOU DON’T!

We have a horror of those alien places, far from the familiar safety and comforts of home, where people are so strange and god only knows what lurks in the underbrush.

Peter Jackson is another of my favorite directors. Over the last decade or so he’s made a name for himself as the auteur responsible for big, bombastic, highly profitable fantasy films with his adaptations of The Lord of the Rings, King Kong and the Hobbit. Additionally he’s produced on any number of excellent scifi films such as District 9.

Love these films or hate them, there is no denying that he is easily one of the most respectable nerds working in motion pictures today.

In my opinion no discussion of horror movies is complete without mention of Herschel Gordon Lewis, the rightly named Godfather of Gore. HGL pioneered the art of selling a movie purely on the amount of red paint and chicken guts you’d see in it. He got his start doing Nudie Cuties in the 50s, films which sold themselves on the underground, non Hayes pornographic circuit purely because they had breasts in them.

Louisiana, 1927. A mob of men storm a hotel bent on violence. Their target is an artist by the name Schweik. They accuse him of laying a terrible curse down on the building and ignore his protests that the land already contains one of the seven gateways to hell. They beat him with chains and crucify him in the basement, before in a final act of furious cruelty they throw quicklime in his face.

Here’s something none of us can really relate to, living in fear of the fact that at any moment the people who run the world could get a little pissy and subsequently turn our planet into a scorched radioactive hellscape!

The Antarctic. Thousands of miles of absolute desolation, a place where we and all the things we take comfort in are utterly unfit to surive.

In many ways it’s like being on another planet, you’re cut off from civilization, living only with a huddled handful of your fellow creatures with little enough to remind you of a home that seems a million miles away.

Zombi 2 is as mentioned in the discussion of Zombi Holocaust a sort of unofficial sequel to Dawn of the Dead, or perhaps an unofficial prequel.
