Let's just say... that humans have mysteriously died out at the height of their scientific technology level, and now ponies have became the next sentient, dominant species on The World as well as others (Minotaurs, Griffins, Kirins, and any other talking animal civilizations). (This is not Earth mind you.)
Ponies haven't even thought about cars until Lyra uncovered one of the many ancient ruins of human civilization. That's my headcanon of her: she's the Indiana Jones of anthropology.
