Twilight Sparkle has been living a lie. Everypony told her what a beautiful and accomplished mare she was. Everypony thought she was a responsible adult. They were wrong. She was still just a filly trying to stumble her way through life.
One night a year, on the Eve of the Summer Sun Celebration, Princess Celestia is sad, at least according to Twilight's observations. She has a plan, a boardgame, and is determined to try to cheer up her mentor.
No clop, but suggestive content.
Life can be tough when you're part of the in-crowd, so it helps to have a few friends you can turn to. For one filly, realizing who those friends are might mean losing the only friend she's ever known. If only she had the courage to face her biggest fear, things might be different.
Maybe this year...

.my name is charon, ferrypony of the underworld.
.it is my task to carry the souls of the dead into the darkness beyond.
.this is a necessary burden, one that i took up at the cost of my own spiritual tranquility.
.and i will not sleep, nor will i taste the soothing kiss of oblivion, until the last pony is ferried.
Twilight Sparkle is a happy pony. With the help of her friends she defeated Tirek. She has a shiny new castle, the kingdom is safe, and she knows the reason behind her ascension. What more could a young princess want?
She is happy, she tells herself as she digs through the ruins of her home. She is so happy she can barely smell the ashes any more.
But in those ashes she finds something unexpected: a small porcelain vase, and with it a decade's worth of unspoken questions. A mystery hiding beneath her hooves, waiting to be put to rest.
Winner of the November Writeoff event.
What is a sock to a pony? What is it really? Something special, something wonderous?
Hardly.
And yet, a quartet of them bothers Twilight on her birthday.
