The Mare in Black fled across the desert and the Gunslinger followed.

Twilight Sparkle is the last gunslinger of Canterlot, itself a fallen city. The world has moved on. All that is left for Twilight is the all-consuming quest for the elusive Dark Tower at the heart of all creation. Few are those who have seen it, though all live on it's beam.

The White and the Black are at war, the Breakers gnaw at the Beams that prop up reality, and the wind of Ka--eternally cruel fate--is blowing. The Tower is near and Twilight will find it no matter what the cost.

You have my interest. I was a great fan of the Dark Tower series although I felt he did falter near the end and pretty much pulled out a Deus ex Machina to solve the problem with the Crimson King. But that's just my interpretation.

I like that so far it's not a slavish adaptation where Twilight = Roland, Scootaloo = Jake and everything that happened to them in the book will happen to them in the story. That would cause me to rage quit right there.

But as I said, you have my interest and my watch. It's now up to you to keep them.

I have never read Dark Tower, but this looks pretty good...I'm basing that on the guy that commented before me and by the story itself, btw dood.:twilightsheepish:

I'mma going to stay tuned if you want, dood.

agree with this guy.

I'm not going to read this if all it is is an adaptation, I dont want to re read the whole damn series again just to freaking rage quit after the end...seriously..that ending...WHAT WAS THE POINT WHEN ALL HE NEEDED WAS THY STUPID *spoiler*!!!

I just felt that was Stephen King's way of saying, "I don't want this to end so f*ck you, it's not going to".

Now that I finished "Song of Susannah" I will read this.

Ok, so the town massacre didn't make it. Scoots as Jake, yeah I can see that working. And this part:

let the guns rest on her hooves, close enough for her to snatch one up with her mouth if magic failed her. Which it wouldn't, of course, but a gunslinger prepares.

Good! I like it! This is shaping up nicely, can't wait for ch. 2.

1571626 I'll try, sai. I actually think Twilight and Roland are similar in a lot of ways--but Twilight, I think, has a bit more imagination. (I'm so-so on the last two books myself. It's not something I hate, but... (I love the whole meta idea, though.)

1571671 No matter what I do, you should read The Dark Tower. I promise it's good. Changed my life, and that's something you can set your watch and warrant on. I first read it as a boy and it followed me around for years, the image of a Dark Tower at the core of creation seared into my imagination.

1571678 Say thankya!

1571801 I'm not doing a straight tit for tat adaptation. For one, mine will be shorter by FAR. For another, the ka-tet is a bit different this time 'round. And for last... I don't know how y'all will like my end. I hope you like it! But... I dunno. It's definitely not the kind of thing I know you're referring to.... (That kind of ending in Ted Dekker's Green left me FURIOUS.)

1572930 They haven't made it to town yet, sai.

1573016

Cry your pardon sai! I wasn't sure if you time skipped over it to when Roland/Twilight meet Jake/Scootaloo. If you're still planing on the town massacre Scoots will have a more interesting introduction to gunslinging. (Slaughtering a town is certainly more traumatic than a bunch of slow muties.)

1573051 Oh you have no idea. Sh, friend, wait and see. :3

Interesting. Some language quibbles:

"nor look into the fire it gave evil birth too"

'too' is obviously the wrong word, but rather than just fix it, i think this could be productively restructured. Maybe 'nor look into the fire given evil birth by it.' (Avoids dangling the participle, and sounds less awkward beside, since the tense feels less abused).

"I’m best friends with two of your best friend’s sisters "

should be: best friends' sisters, because there's two of the friends, and thus plural.

Liked purely because of the Dark Tower and this crossover.

Loved the books. Can't wait to see what happens when they meet the mare in black.
(And maybe, a certain, dainty little choo-choo train?)

1573184 Aye, you've got me there. This is perhaps the most unpolished thing I have on this site. Future installments will have far more polish, I promise you.

1573202 Liking the Dark Tower is always a valid reason to do/read things. :3

1573397 There ain't no brakes on the Friendship Express of ironic name

1573016

Thankee sai.

Yeah, I agree it kinda fizzled out near the end and I wasn't too happy with the continual looping indicating that he'd been through all this before. It just seemed like a bit of a copout. But then at the same time, he's been through this countless times but each time he's gotten something else that he's going to need at some point in his journey before starting anew. Now with the horn, maybe he'll be able to close the loop and the doorway at the top will lead somewhere else?

You have my interest.

1582343 And I'm glad for it, set your watch and warrant by it.

It may only have 69 views, but this story has almost as many comments as some of my more popular stories. Definitely continuing on.

oooh how did I miss this. GREAT start, faved & thumb'd (and stached :moustache:)

1684599 Because it was on the front page for about 2 minutes, that's how. :P lol

Thanks! I can't promise a steady or quick schedule, but I have not forgotten Twilight the Gunsliner.

Oh, I'm loving this. As a big Stephen King fan, I can't wait to see where this will go.

That being said... MOAR :flutterrage:

1783373 I'm glad you liked it!

I haven't worked on it in awhile... and it's not as high up on the list as other tales... but I've not forgotten my lavender gunslinger. She has miles to go before she sleeps.

q97randomguy May have recommended me to this story in passing during a conversation...I like it. The premise is interesting and not something I am to familiar with. Though it says crossover...So I assume its based off of something. Pray tell what is it perhaps? Also the way Twilight is talking is just...interesting :twilightsheepish:

1807573 *hyperventilates over converting you to DT*

haha.

It's a series of 7 books by Stephen King, coolectively called The Dark Tower. It's an amazing series, mixing fantasy and horror and sci fi and westerns...

Imagine Strider with a less sure moral compass and twin revolvers and also a cowboy but kind of a knight too from a world in the future that never was, which is also like the past.

And there are shenanigans.

It's genuinely beautiful, all my silliness aside.

Question: is this basically a ponyfied version of the originals?

1870606 Not entirely.

I'll be following much of the same route, but the details and the end will be different in many ways. It'll be a lot more condensed as well.

1870606
wait a sec, isn't that against the rules? :twilightoops:

1942879 No.

The rule you're thinking about is where peeps take the actual text of a story and just replace names. Like copypasting the text of HArry Potter and replacing "Harry Potter" with "Twilight Sparkle" or "Luke Skywalker" and then changing the personal pronouns.

Hilarious as it can be, it's not a real story you've written so away it goes. I'm just following the plot, the words (except a few quotations) here are mine

Iiiiiiiinteresting! I hope you're going to continue this at some point; the Dark Tower series, flawed as it is, is a masterpiece, and crossing it over with ponies has all sorts of potential.

2156059 Ha, I go back and forth, but I think I might at least try in and between other stuff.

I can't believe I had just found this story. I've been a huge fan if The Dark Tower series, and I'm stoked to read this story.

I know it might sound all of a sudden and kind of weird, but I wanna' draw a piece of fan art for this story, maybe even cover art.

2286427 I would love to see it, if you did! I've never given this one up.

2286441

Consider it a challenge accepted.

After seeing your OFF crossover I looked through your stories list and found this. A Dark Tower/MLP crossover. This is just about the best possible thing. :raritystarry: I think I'll be taking a look at some of your other non-crossover stories soon as well.

After reading some of the previous comments, I have to agree that I also found the ending of King's overall story to be a bit of a letdown (especially what happened to Flagg even before the ending proper, grr, no seriously I could rant about Flagg's fate for untold paragraphs, but I'll spare your comment section that). However, there was one thing that made the story immensely better, at least for me.

That was when I stopped considering the final line of Roland's story to be "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." and instead started considering the final lines to be:
"There they stood, ranged along the hillsides, met
To view the last of me, a living frame
For one more picture! in a sheet of flame
I saw them and I knew them all. And yet
Dauntless the slug-horn to my lips I set,
And blew 'Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came.'"

-- Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came

Essentially, I consider each of Roland's repetitions to be a different adventure along each spoke of the Beams (not an idea original to me, though I wish it were), with the final loop being the original Robert Browning poem. After all, he has the horn in that one.

(Also, one apparently cannot span spoiler tags across multiple lines if there are hard breaks in them, which is kind of lame.)

I shall have to take a look... see if you tell a better story than Stephen King does.

Was going into this thinking I would be disappointed. How pleasantly surprised I was! It's not the best it could possibly be, but it's still actually quite good.

I've also got a Tower story brewing in the back of my head, but it's going to be more of a parallel tale than a complete retelling. Reading this just makes me want to start on it.

Hey, you should totally think about working on this story again. I have not forgotten about it.

6983748 hell, I could try.

6983756 Where are the mini sentries?

Okay, I'll be keeping an eye on this one. Different things are happening, and you've not just replaced names.

Say thankya.
