Nightmare Moon has been defeated, destroyed by the Elements of Harmony. Still some part of her survives, split apart from Princess Luna and trapped in a world of dreams. Now she searches for a way to return to Equestria, to live again and reclaim her throne. However, the dream world is a confusing place with many strange beings who may help or hinder.

(note: "Crossover" with some characters from Sandman comics, but you don't need to be familiar with them.)

\Why do the staff remind me of the element bearers.

RainbowDash looks like fasionist = Rarity.

Fiary = Flutthershy

Owl = Twilight Sparkle.

Also, I hope that Nightmare Moon will find a book "Past Sins" and read it, it may not be a book, but it is still a fanfiction and rather popular and high guality one.
( after all this story was add to past sins group, so it only makes sense since so far I not noticed anythink past sins related ).

The correlation between the Mane Six and the Sandman characters is not something I planned originally, but it just sort of fell into place as I noticed the parallels while writing their introductions. It definitely does not extend to all the characters that NMM will meet, nor am I going to stretch things to try and make connections where they don't come naturally.

As for the connection with Past Sins... The key word here is "prequel". You'll just have to be patient to see how that works out.

You'll have to be patient, the Minty story is my main priority. It'll get at least another chapter before this story does.

I wonder do Nightmare Moon will end up in Twilight Sparkle dream and find out that she is more then just pony who defeated her.

Also since this fanfic was put in Nyx related stories, I am surprised that Nyx was not mentioned here yet, even as story what Nightmare Moon would read

If you think about the timeline of this story, and how it relates to the timeline of Past Sins, maybe you'll see why we haven't heard anything about Nyx.

Well, your story was kind of confusing because I still not understand how it is related to past sins, and also do Nightmare Moon will even learn that there exist a version of her what was adopted by the one who defeated her, the one who took over Equestria, banished Celestia and then return throne and asked for forgiveness ?

The Mad Fashion Thing always dresses in style.

Anyway, loving the crossover so far, though it feels like it's still spinning up to speed.

Poor Nightmare, degraded into being a boogypony.

Well, at least she didn't force choke him with her star-mane. Dream bouncers get no respect.

I like it.

Have a Spikestache! :moustache::moustache::moustache:

Possible reference to Past Sins with Spell Nexus studying the armor fragments.:trollestia:

"One does not simply trot into dreamstuff..."

If this is the prequel of Past Sins, which I believe it is, that Nemesis could be the source that was brainwashing Spell Nexus and the Children of Nightmare.

Glad to see Nightmare getting the upper hoof on someone here.

And here is where Past Sins likely starts

This title sounds like a Breaking Benjamin song :rainbowderp:
Just sayin', it reminds me of it :rainbowhuh:

Had to Google that... "Evil Angel"? Hmm, not bad.

The story was actually named after a song from The Cult, though.

A Sandman crossover? Yay!
A little fix:
Celestia’s had a millennia to shape Equestria in her own image
"millenia" is plural. It should be "a millenium" instead.

This is really cool so far, and I've never even read Sandman.

how in the seven hells does this story not have more recognition?

A Salad Fingers reference? In my MLP? It's more likely than you'd think!

In recognition of your insightful comment, I gift you a grubby tap! :pinkiecrazy:

But what... Nobody's mentioned the Lovecraft stuff? Nobody reads the classics anymore?

3946443 You know what, I didn't even notice the Lovecraftian stuff. I must have been on autopilot again. Having re-read it, I can safely say this...

fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/104/e/e/i_see_what_you_did_there_by_deadwoodpete83-d4w6of0.jpg#I%20see%20what%20you%20did%20there%20900x776

By the way, the feeling of rust against my salad fingers feels almost ORGASMIC...

thanks for the story, I see the goings on as ground work leading up to penstroke's work past sins. I can only nod my head a little as it gives the story direction, and overall the journey has been compelling.

Nice Lovecraft reference. The White Ship am I right? The beginning almost felt like a straight retelling of that. Or were you referencing the Plains of Leng? That would also make sense cause of Lovecraft's Dream Cycle stories.

Kinda own the Collected Works of Lovecraft you see.

Hehee! I, um... haven't actually read either of those. :twilightblush:

When I first introduced the nightgaunts in this story, I only knew of them from flipping through S. Peterson's Field Guide to Cthulhu Monsters. Sometime after that (at a friend's urging) I read The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, which is awesome of course, and that's what inspired this recent diversion through hideous Ling.

Despite depending on others' help so much to stay alive and fulfill her plans, Nightmare is rather callous, even to the ones she considers friends. Looks like she hasn't learned anything since her encounter with the Elements. If she doesn't shape up soon, she'll find herself right where she was before: alone and surrounded by enemies. And I don't think she'll get another extra chance.

She also doesn't seem to consider how hurtful her own actions can be to others. Nightmare was clearly horrified by Cain's actions both times he went after Abel, but thought nothing of striking Abel herself when she was upset. The same with Celestia and Equestria. Early on, she thought of how her subjects might be 'suffering' under her 'abusive sister,' but she was quick to try and control the dreaming ponies with force and violence, and her own pleasant dreams had her getting a pony thrown into a Fiery Pit for bringing forth a proposal she didn't like. Not to mention the implications of what kind of country would have a Fiery Pit. Nightmare needs a wake-up call (no pun intended), or she might lose what little she still has.

4105602 I agree, kinda want to see if the author has plans for something like that and if so what

The only bit of really consistent feedback that I've been getting on this story seems to be a desire for Nightmare Moon to not really be so bad, or for her to experience some epiphany so that she sees the error of her ways. And I just want you to know, I can understand where you guys are coming from.

However... As I think some of you already know, this story is intended as a prequel to another that has already been written, and it's one in which NMM is still a Bad Pony. Thus, I cannot alter her personality without breaking that continuity. Furthermore, the outline is written, and I'm pretty determined to stick with it.

You all have got me second-guessing myself, though. Maybe I should at least put a "Tragedy" tag on this story? According to my dictionary, a tragedy is, "a play dealing with tragic events and having an unhappy ending, esp. one concerning the downfall of the main character". That seems to hit pretty close to home.

It's not entirely bleak, though. Something good will come of all this. It just may not be the something that you all are looking for, or happen the way you expect.

4109990 The thing is, I realize that this is a Past Sins prequel and have read that story, but having this story end with Nightmare using the ritual to return to Equestria and stopping where Past Sins begins seems like an obvious ending, and what I've come to expect from plot twists makes me unwilling to believe that it will be that simple. We know that enough of Nightmare's energies made it through to Equestria to form a new body, but her mind didn't, which leaves a lot of options for endings. I was thinking that maybe somehow the Nemesis managed to get itself summoned instead of her, or that because the ritual gets interrupted only a portion of her power goes to Equestria while most of her stays in the Dreaming, weakened like Luna was after the pilot episode but otherwise whole.

The way in which Past Sins starts, and how only parts of the ritual are fully elaborated on even in the sequels, leaves plenty of ambiguity for how this story could connect to it. There are plenty of inventive options if you look for them, and personally, I would be disappointed if this intriguing crossover ended in such a simple and predictable fashion, especially as what little I know about Sandman characters tells me that they wouldn't just ignore Nightmare's actions, even if they decide not to punish her. Particularly since Morpheus is supposed to be both meticulously devoted to the rules and has high pride.

A tragedy would have an unhappy ending, although it doesn't need to be sad or grim leading up to it. If you decide that it will definitely have a bad or bittersweet end, though, you should definitely add the tag as some people really do not like reading tragedies.

I really hope you're going to do something unexpected with this plot line, even if Nightmare doesn't decide to reform herself, or at least have someone point out how hypocritical Nightmare's beliefs are to her actions.

Oooooooh.
Ling for changeling!
I get it now!

Aru

Sandman crossover? Oh hell yes. I'm here for a Sandman, screw ponies.:derpytongue2:

This is related to past sins in... what? Both have Nightmare Moon?

Because in the full story, there is not even a mention of Nyx

4899027

The word you're looking for is "prequel". This is leading up to Past Sins, not following after.

4899027

“Ohh… What an intriguing idea! If she were taken prisoner, she could not wield the Elements of Harmony against us as she did before, and the blood of one who defeated us would make a potent charm.”

“Yes, steal the life from the blood of the bearer of the Element of Magic. Let it give you strength, so that you may shed the rest of her blood with your own hooves, ” Nexus whispered to the shreds, as if in prayer. (Past Sins, Prelude)

:derpyderp1:Twilight's blood + nightmare moon's fragments+ dark magic=Nyx

:facehoof: This is the prequel/side-story to Past Sins. I guess you could call this whole story Chapter -1 of Past Sins.

4969501 thanks frost, but zobeid already tell is a prequel

All I could think of was this, hilarious.

Nightmare, you should be grateful that the King Dream isn't punishing you, *shiver* he's scary when he's mad.

pretty good, that conversatIon could of went better for nIghtmare

I like thier interactions. Hopefully he will able to guide her to better living.

Uh oh, bad nightmare!

Im guessing penstroke will be conversing with deeam momentarily

that was nice, using her full repertoire of skills, too many just rely on Unicorn magics to move a story forward

convulsive lurched propelled

I cant tell if that's wrong or not.

Well.... that was unexpected, till next time I guess.
given the idea if I remember somer earlier comments of this being a prequel to past sins, hmm yes, I wonder how this will turn out.
