Well, they wouldn't put any of the known sapient beings in a cage for fear of legal reprisal, so therefore it would have to be an unknown creature which the ponies wouldn't be able to understand, be capable of classifying as dangerous (hoomins can be pretty scary), and yet still have sapience. The presence of two different colored eyes would suggest a mammal with a complex genetic structure that would allow for minor mutations.
