Flutter Stutter [S6: "Flutter Brutter"]
A week had passed since Zephyr Breeze had learned to apply himself, graduated from mane therapy school, and found a job as a stylist in Manehattan. Fluttershy swelled with pride when she got the news about her brother's new job, and couldn't wait to share it with her friends.
To that end, she called them all together for lunch at their favorite outdoor cafe. Once everypony was seated and had ordered, she laid the letter from Zephyr on the table. "Good news, everypony! Zephyr Breeze has a job in Manehattan! He's moving in with somepony who was looking for a roommate, he's enthusiastic about working for a living, he's really turned his life around!"
"That's great, Fluttershy!" Twilight said happily. "I'm glad you were able to get through to him the value of hard work and following through on things."
"I just hope it sticks," Rainbow muttered. "The fewer surprise visits we get from Zeph, the better."
"Well, I'm quite proud of you for turning your shiftless brother's life around, darling," Rarity said as she squeezed a lemon wedge into her water.
"But you know," Spike said as he rolled a lemon around on the table like a ball, "it's kinda funny that you read your brother the riot act for not having a job when, y'know...you kinda don't have one either."
Everything froze.
Six heads turned slowly to face Fluttershy.
Fluttershy's ears wilted. "I...I...I..."
"Ooh, that's gotta hurt," Pinkie said with a wince.
Fluttershy made a quiet, squeaky whimpering noise.
Applejack slapped Spike upside the head. "Way to go, genius," she muttered.

But yeah, it really isn't clear what Fluttershy does for a living. Though given how much ponies manage their environment, ecosystem management may well be a paid job in Equestria. At the very least, it's volunteer work. Still, a pretty big question mark hanging over her finances, one that presents some fun storytelling opportunities.
Also, I though you hated people using that particular nickname.
Oh, I'm sure she has some way of paying the bills. That cottage doesn't pay for itself, and animal care isn't cheap. It's not like Twilight had a job before she became a princess either.

Neither do either you or Twilight, yes Twilight's a Princess, now, but before that and before Ponyville, she didn't really have a job apart from Princess Celestia's Student, and you were her No 1 Assistant.
The general consensus is that Fluttershy is a wildlife veterinarian, and an Everfree Wildlife consultant, employed by Ponyville Town Hall, to keep in check the wild animals that live in the Everfree forest and more or less keep them away from the town. Sort of half-forest ranger and half-zookeeper.
Her income would have increased considerably after she became an Element Bearer, you know, (via royal stipend) with all the mandatory Imminent Danger Pay whenever the Map calls on her to go and solve a friendship problem.

As princess, she's probably still getting royal funds. Or they could actually give Twilight some political authority over Ponyville, so she could use Ponyville's tax revenue to hire guards and officials, establish her own court, and all that.
Sure it is not clear what Fluttershy does exactly for a living since her animal care taking is benevolent.
Though there are suggestion she earns quite a bit of money during the sort time she model for Photo Finish and that she is also paid for her birds singing performance.
And there are the fan theories that she is writing some novels of some particular style if you know what I mean.

Twilight might have been receiving money as part of her scholarship with Princess Celestia, but as she moved to Ponyville, she became the towns librarian and after Winter Wrap Up, one the town's main organizer. So it is not so far fetch that she has been remunerate by the town hall as a municipality employee.
As for Spike, he is stated as a baby, so though he does a lot of chores for Twilight, he does receive some (pocket) money from her.
The way I see it, she gets paid to watch over other ponies' pets on a commission basis, and while those are offscreen, they happen enough that she can afford everything she needs.
You have to admit, there is a touch of irony in the whole situation once it is pointed out.

Another theory is Flutter receives a modest stipend from the town hall, because her cottage acts as an outpost to warn Ponyville in case of any danger coming from the forest (like wildfires). There aren't many ponies willing to live next to the Everfree.
Canonically speaking, we know she does pet grooming services. So while she doesn't work FOR someone else, she is self-employed.

For all we know, the Golden Oak like many others had been planted by a seeding project funded by a Fillydelphia robber baron's charity, and Twilight was getting a monthly cheque from the Carneighie Foundation.
They're right. Fluttershy doesn't have a job. She has 2. She's the town animal rescue and an Everfree Ranger, or at least, that's my headcanon.

Well that's not entirely accurate. Seeing as how she doesn't like interacting with strangers, has a severe phobia on social interactions, and has animals come to her rather than the other way around. She's more a druid than a ranger (especially since she hates violence, and pretty much sucks in a fight. Rather she relies on her 'Stare' for combat, or ignoring that, running and hiding ... or having her animal friends fight for her.)
As for animal rescue. She takes in animals that come to her, because of her kindness. But Ponyville has a Veterinarian, and Flutters hates getting out of her comfort zone (aka. The safety of her home / the familiar). Fluttershy's simply takes care of her pets. Like any animal owner. But that isn't a job. Unlike the other ponies of the Mane 6 (sans Twilight who is a Princess, and prior to that was a profressional student under the guidance of a princess of Equestria), never actually worked. We see animals go to her for food (again animal owner), or animals she's taken to help in an unofficial standard. But we never see ponies come to her for help (outside of Winter Wrapup), anyone with authority come to her for help with animal related business, nor her actually earn any money. Nor do any kind of actual, official work.
To echo most of the comments, as funny as this is, it doesn't seem to make sense: Fluttershy definitely does a job, even if she's doing it for free...
