Curse of Immortality

A commemorative night fell upon the Royal Castle. Celestia sat alone on the floor of her bedroom in all but total darkness. The gentle glow of the moon softly peered in her windows from around faint openings in the curtains. Tears were slowly steaming down her elegant face. It was the day, they day when she honored her past students.

"Why do I always cry on this day?" she thought to herself as she slowly got up to face a memorial wall of pictures. The pictures were of different unicorns, with a name and short comments below each:

She looked up at one and saw a picture of blue unicorn with a pale cornflower blue mane was shown with the comment, Although your boasting can get the best of you, I am happy to say that you are one of my students. -C

"Trixie, you and Twilight were the best of friends." thought Celestia letting out a sigh, "I worried about you the most. I worried that your boasting would get the better of you. Sadly, I was right. You dropped out to start your one-mare show. You may not be dead, but you were my past student."

There was also a lone candle under every portrait. "This part is never easy," she thought letting out a sorrowful sigh. These were the alicorn’s past students, "Sometimes I wish that everypony could be able to live forever. That would make this day a little less painful for me." Each picture of them gave Celestia a small weak smile of delight.

Her smile was quickly turned upside down as she went forth and carefully lit each candle. Illuminated them made Celestia cry harder and harder, as she lit the final candle, "Why must they all die?" She slowly trotted over to her bed. Laying down the saddened alicorn continued to cry.

"I wish, that all of them could be able to live forever like me. I loved them so much. It still brings pain to my heart to know they’re dead. It all happened to fast. One minute they're brand new students, the next they're graduating, and then the last minute, I realize that they aren't like my sister and I. They all have to die, someday. "

The princess continued to sob in the soft glow of the candlelight. The pain of losing them had been renewed within her compassionate heart. It only served to stir fresh new tears in her already moist eyes.

After a short time passed, Celestia’s tears tapered off and she regained her composure. The princess sat up and decided to write a letter to her current student Twilight Sparkle. She used her magic and gathered a fresh piece of parchment, some ink and her quill. Collecting her thoughts, she began writing. A good while went by and she had completed her heartfelt composition. The princess looked over it carefully, making sure that there was no errors. The letter read:

My Faithful Student Twilight,

As you have probably guessed, I am well over a thousand years old. What you don't know however is just how long I ruled with my sister before her anger got the better of her…let's just keep it simple and say it's been a while.

In that lifetime I lived, I have been mentor to many. Every so often, I light a candle to remember those who are no longer among us. It can get a little hard sometimes. Every single one of my students took a piece of my heart with them, because I loved them all so very much. It’s with a heavy heart I admit my fears that someday I will lose you too.

I had feared this since the day when your first became my student. In fact, I feared this day with all of my students. Do not be scared, I sent a letter like this to all my students.

It pains me to realize that someday, I will also lose your friends. When evil comes, I will have to search for new wielders of the Elements of Harmony. Your friends also have a special place in my heart. It brings a smile to my face when each of them sends me letters about their lessons in friendship.

I hope you understand why I have you send me all those letters. Partly it’s to help my future students as well as others to learn the valuable lessons of friendship. But most important of all Twilight, I have you write them so like the rest of my students, I will have something to remember you by. Sometimes, I just like read them and remember past memories. Your letters remind me of the days when I was your age, playing with my sister in the royal grounds. Oh how we got in so much trouble! We learned so many lessons about friendship from our parents. It brings a feeling of warmth to my heart that you are learning the same lessons too. Even today, I am still learning. Even Luna is too, your letters help her with learning the modern language and how to interact with the modern world..

Regardless of when the fateful day I lose you arrives, never forget how much you mean to me. I also want you to know just how proud I am at the unicorn you’re becoming! You’ll be in my heart…always and forever more Twilight!

Your Loving Teacher,

Princess Celestia

P.S. Tell Pinkie Pie that her letters are the most humorous of the group. Oh and tell her to send me more of that delicious cake!

After the letter was written, Celestia looked to the wall covered in pictures. Next to the wall, was a was a wall with just one picture on it. It was a picture of Twilight under it, a lone candle sat waiting for they day it would be lit.

"Sadly, I had to this for all my students. Having to count the days when you do leave me forever." Celestia thought as she closed her eyes and went to sleep, "Of all my students, you are clearly the best."

HNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGG
Those feels, man.

I found one mistake through this whole thing!
Last line in paragraph 12- "Loose" should be "lose".

Love it. Fav'd.

So sad... But so true.

That's excatly what I was thinking when I saw the title.

And now I'm thinking Celestia's chandlers must be hella busy.

I just wanted to reach in, and give Celestia a hug. No one ever said immortality was fun. Although... wouldn't the technical term be 'eternal', rather than 'immortal'? A lot of people get those confused. 'Immortal' means 'unable to die'. 'Eternal' means 'unable to die of natural causes'.

Will this piece be continued, because it says incomplete, however this just feels like a one piece to me. Sad, short, and to a powerful point.

A sad story...to be honest I would hate to be Princess Celestia going through all that pain.:raritycry:

The story was short and sweet, so touching. :raritywink:

I don't know. I'm a project guy and it would be great to be able to finish my life's works. I'm also pretty social, so it would be hard. However, I would get the chance to get involved with so many great individuals. You would also have the chance to help those that past live on as a firt hand witness and friend. The sad part would be forgetting the older relationships.

I was sort of inspired by that comic.

that was very sad. almost made me shed a manly tear. and that is very hard to do.:ajsmug:

While i enjoyed the story, i've began to notice a lack of stories about immortality being a boon. They are always sad, cry fests in someway.

I need to write a fic about immortality not sucking.

Wow...:fluttercry:

♪Who wants to live foreverrr...♪

DAMN I keep crying but...I dont care Listen to this while reading

I just listened to JamesIsTheBrony read this on YouTube, and I have to say, the saddest thing about it is how poorly it's written.

Oh, your plain mechanics are fine, don't get me wrong. But there is more to telling a story than spelling and grammar. The fact is, this piece is a perfect example of why we need the adage "show, don't tell". Does Celestia normally go about, monologuing her emotions to herself? She tells us about the past, tells herself how she's feeling, then tells Twilight a bunch of stuff. That's not effective storytelling (a word that needs to be excised from the English language for being misleading).

I could go into how this is not a story (a story needs a plot, plot requires conflict, there is no conflict, thus no plot and no story), but I'll leave off by saying that immortality and extreme longevity are common tropes in pony fanfic, and thus realms that have been written to death. Your attempt to squeeze emotion from this cliche adds nothing to the overall body of work based around the concept, and that is most specifically why this is not effective.

me: feel are overloading
Renamon: slaps me in face
ME: thanks

any was this story made me tear up in the middle of class

You're killing me, man. This is VERY painful. Immortality. Tis both a blessing and a curse.

I mean, I should know. I'm an invincible robot!:pinkiehappy:

For every story I love, I make a song for. The song length depends on how much I love it. So get ready to know how much I do :pinkiehappy:
In the shadow of the night
In the sunshine of the daylight
Remember I will forever remember you
Don't be afraid to go
It only makes it worse
Cherish your life
For you might not have it long...
So please don't be frightened of this time
For even if your gone, you will always play a part of my life

Immortality suck. Cause all your loved ones dies.does cadence even know that she will outlive shining armor?

:trollestia: :AND NOW, I SHALL GIVE THIS TO TWILIGHT SPARKLE!

Love this story soo much :rainbowkiss:

And for the first time in her history, she buckled. Twilight is an alicorn and that candle need never be lit.
