Oh god when was this actually written... (checks DA version)... yep, May 2011. Smack-dab in Season 1-times. These days I'd have done things a little differently (and yes, used the word "races") but we were still in the wild west era of ponyfic. Not everything was hammered out yet. I kind of miss that.
Also I regret nothing re: the Princess of Ponyville thing nothing.
(One day I'll consider emdashes worth my time. One day.)

Not bad. The idea that the Cutie Mark Crusaders would actually succeed in anything they attempted is a little hard to swallow, of course, but with enough suspension of disbelief to account for that, this was cute and sweet.

This reads like a dream sequence from the beginning, but with Luna showing up first, I had to double check the date and make sure this was still written pre-season two.
Applejack was not my first guess for the first guest, but it made for a nice "aha!" moment when the twist hit. And if all the stated accomplishments for Rarity and Applejack seemed to have the air of childish exaggeration, well, that checks out too.
(Scootaloo does not qualify here because Rainbow Dash's accomplishments are impossible to overstate in the first place)
Given the generally contentious nature of Rarity and Sweetie Belle's relationship in the series itself, it's heartwarming to see a story where Sweetie does something for Rarity because she loves her big sis and it also doesn't backfire horribly. And this could've been more of a comedy with obviously out of place elements slipping in, but keeping the ruse up the whole way also underlines how she really does understand who Rarity is and what matters to her, and that's sweet too.
Alas, getting a sweet dream when stress piles up really is only fiction.
