Bookish Delight

I've moved on from Fimfiction. New works on AO3!

T

After so much preparation, the Grand Galloping Gala is here at last! How will its attendants from Ponyville fare... and most importantly, will Rarity find true love? (An AU alternative to the canon Gala... written before the Gala. Ahhh, naivete.)

Well, you got the glass shoes right, at least!

this reads like a cliffhanger.... where's the rest if i may ask ?:twilightoops:

Loved this one. Don't know why but everything feels so smooth :yay:

Would you...

..for a friend?

You might have just written a new ending for this to bring it back to canon! :rainbowlaugh:

Oh the whole, I think I like your version better than what officially happened in the show. :pinkiehappy: When you get right down to it, the Mane Six really should have more social prestige, even among the Canterlot "upper classes", than the show gives them considering that they are the Bearers of the Elements of Harmony, which is only the most powerful magical force in all of Equestria, and that they did save the world from Nightmare Moon while restoring one-half of the royal diarchy to her true self and right mind. Not to mention that Twilight Sparkle is Celestia's personal student, and Celestia clearly considers her and her friends to be important ponies given that she goes to Ponyville to visit them on more than one occasion. You'd think everyone would want to be seen in their company at the biggest social event of the year!

(Plus, the episode never really did explain why the animals in the royal gardens avoided Fluttershy like the plague right from the beginning. Sloppy storytelling there.)

Now this is great fun. Even though it’s been overtaken by canon, I love your version of these events; in some ways, they’re even more entertaining. The dialogue between Rarity and Applejack was especially snappy, but it’s great all the way through, as is the characterization. And poor Rainbow! I can totally imagine that happening to her. Very nice work!

Oh, Twilight, how sweet of you! Very clever work here – I didn’t see that little twist coming, but it makes great sense. It’s a lovely resolution, and a fine take on Twilight and Rarity’s relationship, even if it’s just a tiny bit… well, shippier than I’m normally comfortable with. Still, a wonderful story, arguably better than canon. Kudos!

Shipteasing, you say? You should totally read Revisionist History, then. :raritywink:

(sigh) But in all seriousness, much appreciated, and... quite honestly? Yeah. I really prefer my version to the show's. While that may sound like hubris, this really wasn't something I wanted to happen. I consider my writing a far cry from the series's and fully expected "The Best Night Ever" to blow my version out of the water for me, to replace my own feeble imagination. Back then I vividly remember wanting to close out the season I'd just spent discovering these new awesome wonderful pony friends with a nice warm goodbye at the pony event of the year.

Instead it gave me those new friends at their worst. It's the one episode of the show I've never been able to forgive, and I'm the one who wrote a whiny 2,600 word-essay lamenting "Magical Mystery Cure"'s very existence.

Anyway, history lesson over. Far as I'm concerned until the end of time, the Gala ended with two unicorns kissing. :rainbowlaugh:

Appreciate the feedback as always, you two.

2957662 You're quite welcome! And no offense, but if "Revisionist History" is more overt than this, I'll likely give it a miss. This fic had about as much subtext as I can usually take. :twilightblush:

I'm afraid I don't despise "The Best Night Ever" quite as much as you do (I found it only mildly disappointing), but I absolutely know how you feel. Showing us the Mane Six "at their worst" is a terrible way to end a season. I don't blame you at all for liking your version better.

Hmm, I just finished reading this story, and I like it, the best word I have for it is "sweet".

I have to disagree with you on "Best Night Ever", I always found it a fantastic episode. It was uncomfortable seeing the mane 6 in a less than flattering light, but they were redeemed in the end. To many children's stories end with everything turning out for the best, if not better. In "Best Night Ever," however the writers showed that unrealistic expectations have a way of blowing up in your face.

Here's the thing though, when things go wrong (especially when its your own fault) thats when you need your friends. As we see at the end of the evening with them commiserating, laughing, and seeing their friendships as the truly important thing that had gotten overlooked in their individual quests for the best night ever. It was a major moment of growth for them, that allowed them to mature as characters and strengthened their bond with each other enough to get through Discord. (thats my head cannon anyway)

I guess it just resonated with me. Some of my best memories of my friends are when days went horribly wrong and we somehow hours later ended up in an awful waffle at 4am debating the meaning of life and whether we should try and get some sleep or power through till dawn.

Anyway, liked the story, if not quite as much as I did "Best Night Ever"

:rainbowlaugh: Hey, it was a simpler time.

...I miss those times.

4759589 That's actually crazy though, it's almost like you knew what was going to happen...

I tend to be suspiciously good at guessing the outcomes of fiction I digest, since I've digested so many.

It is both a blessing and a curse. :twilightsheepish:

I'll be honest. i thought for a second that this was all Rarity's dream with the Mane 6 all thanking her for making thier dresses and those dresses somewhat made thier dreams come true

That sounds like a nightmare. For Rarity, anyway.

Rarity held back a mild blush. "Thank you. But I'm hardly the Princess--especially here."

"You're Ponyville's Princess. And really, who's going to challenge you for that title? Just be careful you don't show up Celestia with your fashion sense tonight. Even I can see it's off the scale."

Soooo....Rarity. About that whole "Princess of Ponyville" thing? I might just have some news for you. Don't mind me, just teasing the writer.

RARITY WILL ALWAYS BE THE REAL PRINCESS NO U

Well, didn't see that Charming/Twilight thing coming. o_O

YOUR MOM. I actually haven't seen that episode yet.

majestic indigo unicorn pegasus

You've quite the knack for atmosphere and acting, Sparkle--not to mention dance! Read up on some techniques before tonight, did we?"

Well that dates this. :pinkiehappy:

...

I can't help but laugh over how far removed the first half is from what wound up happening. :twilightsheepish:

For what FiM was and was about, I wish we'd gotten more season finales like the first one. I said in an earlier comment that part of what made the show work was its regard for the mundane realities of life, and that applies to the plotting as much as the setting. Magical mayhem is fun and all, but gimme stories about dealing with life's hard stuff. Some of the later finales managed to split the difference, some didn't, but The Best Night Ever remained one of a kind all the way to the end.

So it's fluffy and endearing seeing most of the girls achieve their goals for the evening and thank Rarity for her dresses helping them get there, but I'm glad the episode went the direction it did.

...and the then the back half of this winds up tackling the same theme, in a warmer, kissier, more individually special sort of way. :pinkiegasp: Surreptitiously playing a part to give a friend her dream night is the sort of sweet gesture I can absolutely see Twilight doing, and it's genuinely touching.

Rarity gasped as she saw something unexpected, but special nonetheless. She smiled, and closed her eyes, her heart part aflutter, and part at peace.

And for Rarity's part, these lines alone say it all. She knew, and immediately accepted the sentiment at work, even if she could've reasonably been bothered by the ruse.

You'd never see something like this in a fairy tale, but it's got that fairy tale sort of feeling. And that's the magic of friendship.
