Yay hugs!
this is just a minor complaint… but, your story doesn't really have any ponies interaction with the group. Yeah I know it's kind of stupid to ask, but I'm just curious about it. Is there a reason why?
6614342
Iiiiii should change that, shouldn't I?
(Makes a note - Add more pony.)
6614368 well how about a constant character, or a character that just pops out every so often.
6614380
I actually just came up with the perfect idea for one.
They'll show up once Vincent, Lucy, and Christine are back in Las Pegasus.
Not only will there be some pony tenants, but there will even be somepony that interacts with a member of the family on a regular basis.
6614409 Ah, I'm happy that I help you in that regard. oh by any chance can you help me out with something? you know avatar the legend of korra, the name of that eccentric inventor?
I am happy to see that you are pumping out new chapters for this story. For sum time there was no new chapters to this story but now you are doing well, so Keep up the good work.
Now Don't git me wrong, I am all so enjoying Shifting Melodies as well and look forward to seeing the next chapter to that story as well so keep them going as fast as you can, If you can find the time for them.
Dragonfox
Time for magitech to come about for the sake of Bit's studies! A multimedia recording crystal would probably be easiest to create or adapt, followed by a player, then magical batteries of some kind, a recorder of some kind, and finally, making it mass producible and selling it to fund research on a magically based vacuum tube computer, then sell the designs for that, then adapt improvements into it, until finally, he can make a backup of himself. The long game of technological advancement is his only real way to keep his sanity.
6614368 - Midnight Song - You rang~?
6614848
Ah. We could do that. We could very well do that.
I actually came up with a different plan as well~
So in case you don't want to give her over, I have a plan B.
6614704 If they have golems (even basic ones) a computer would not be that difficult for Bit to make. Just have a small, immobile golem who's soul purpose is to hold data temporarily and BAM! Magical RAM unit! Or even a small golem that just does two things, can flip between two states and can communicate it's current state to some other golem. That's the basics of a computer right there! On/off, 1/0.
A crystal could store data (hardrive), some enchanted material for the wires (between/within the componants), etc.
Is anyone else getting a forboding sense of forshadowing here? Or is it just me?
6615112 A massive repeating and alternating chain of golems... Theoretically they would be small and very easy to make... Then again, the problem becomes space. How much between each golem, how many golems for each operation, and so on. It is actually the exact opposite problem as the rocks and sand XKCD strips.
6615453 The golems would replace transistors. "What I've Done" is the fanfic where I got the idea from.
6615363
No way man she's my favorite character
6615485
Maybe not death, but injury perhaps?
6615469 So, skip the first step of vacuum tubes and go for the large room sized computers rather than the building sized ones? Of course, this is assuming that they would mirror us as far as tech goes. They could substitute an illusion spell for a monitor and a movement mirror space to interpret commands. Of course, teaching it the relevant commands would be initially easy, basic math usually is, but teaching it division and multiplication is where it gets complicated. Then there is language, though by then, theoretically you could start networking them. Then some one could start miniaturizing the whole thing, automating the simple commands and so on so you just hit a button...
6615453 A GOOD 3 ounce quality quartz crystal with the correct latis structure could possibly hold over 4 tera bytes of information. Or around there.
As I understand it, on of the Crystal Skulls could hold all information on the internet and NOT be half filled, could be wrong by this time though! Been some time since I bothered with any of that
6615588
No not really. I haven't planned ahead any farther than about a week after this.
6615806 Multiplication isn't that hard. It's just repetitive addition.
6616927 Tell every step to a computer. For example, 10 times 36. You would have to tell it to add 10, 36 times. Now, I don't know about you, but 12 by 12 is one of the more odd multiplication based problems. Because of simple repitition. Humans, and ponies, make mistakes when they have to repeat something without a break. Hence why the position of mathematician used to be respected, and their used to be a more valued position called calculator. Then we made computers common, and suddenly they were redundant because the machine was consistently accurate.
6616980 Exactly, it's not hard at all from programing perspective!
6617899 Humans make errors. Hence why the record for pi's digits is at a million places last I heard. So, good luck calculating for every last possible number to put in the computer that actually predates the flip phone by at least five years. Hell, even if you just plugged Bit into it, he would only be able to shove the entire addition and subtraction tables on it before it started melting parts or simply overloading the golems and crystals with information due to simple physical limitations.
6617926 Bit's a program. I'm sure he could just copy the part of him that translates binary into higher level code into the computer... The rest is just regular computer programing. My Major is computer science. I think we're talking about slightly different things...
6618611 I am a server trained network specialist thanks to my high school, we probably are. But hey, it's fun to bounce ideas around right?
6618655 True... Also my old Highschool is going down the drain in terms of the tech department. The servers are so old they could literally fail tomorrow and no one (except maybe the head of the IT department/Network admin.) would be surprised. All because the head of the IT department and the Network admin are the same person.
Aren't conflict of interests fun?
Anywho... I was basically saying that making a computer with tiny golems replacing the tiny transistors (the on/off part of the computer) wouldn't change to much. Also, loops. For multiplication all you would have to do is program in a loop.
Example:
while(x>1){
y=y+y;
x=x-1;
}
This would basically multiply y by x for any value of x or y (within reason, int type variables can only go so high, same goes for double and long... Even though realistically you probably won't ever fill an int under normal circumstances...)
6618691 Wait, seriously? It is that simple? I took a game programming course and the first assignment was making a straight line walking program by reinventing the atom. The book for that class was also less than helpful. Then again, no one can use my colleges unified site for registration, including the faculty checking off stuff to confirm we can take the classes.
6618808 Did you do it in Java or in something like Game Maker? Cause there's a BIG difference.
6618831 Did it in Unity, a professional level game program creator with a viewing screen to display what we created. The most annoying part was teaching it what I wanted to be the ground. Though, there is something to be said for switching to Python.
6618908 The hardest part in CS (computer science) for me is getting the GUI up and running...
In Highschool, we learned in GameMaker but we had a section for Java.
6618935 I want to laugh because that is a funny acronym when you say it quickly, but I have no clue what all is involved in making one work beyond at some point there is binary involved.
6618979 A GUI (Graphical User Interface) is what is displayed to the monitor. Even Eclipse's (Which is basically Java (It even saves the programs as Java files)) Console is technically a GUI. The order of code from lowest level is Binary, low-level, high-level (Java, C, C++, etc.), then other things like GameMaker and such.
Without GUI's we would still basically be using punch-cards and printers for all our computer use...
Most of the things in programs are actually calculated on the spot, as you can't predict every possibility.
6619001 Well, technically you could, but it would be a complete resource hog, or so limited as to be a dedicated tool for one job. Like the control board for a CNC mill.
6619111 "CNC mill"
A what mill?
6622150 A cut and carve mill, or a computer guided carving tool for cutting shapes out of steel for use. Or, possibly more familiar to you, a plastic dowel carving machine that follows a pattern you put in that can also be used on wood.
6622173 Ah
Yeah, machines like that (same exact motion again and again) are simple to program.
