Ponies can live to 300 or more? Seriously? I've seen this done in other HiE stories, and all it seems to do is complicate the relationship. There doesn't seem to be any legit reason for it happening either, and even though most authors say "There's a lot of magic in Equestria.", they forget that equines really only live for about 25-30 years on average, and you could have expanded their lived to 90-100 years because of magic.
And why should magic give someone a longer life anyways? If that is your attitude, then presumably, you have an entire system of how you want magic to work in this story's universe.

That's how long horses live on Earth perhaps but keep in mind how long humans were actually supposed to live. Way back in time if you lived to be 30 you were older than hell. Sentient races would generally live longer, the show has reason to support the theory in a couple cases and magic generally makes them a little more robust and sort of acts as a natural help. Also their doctors would likely be able to do things ours would only dream of (though both would probably be able to do a few things the other couldn't.)

The reason forty is written as the average age of death is because of statistical imbalance. The sheer amount of young deaths due to starvation, mortal accident, murder, disease, war, birth defects, etc. caused the stats to plummet. If someone lived to be sixteen, they were most likely going to live to be seventy.
