The Starship Enterprise and her crew must deal with a scientist haunted by his past, armed with a tool that could either revive his lost world in a new form or bring untold destruction. Meanwhile, the last two members of a dying race have made their way into the Enterprise's holodeck and have started up a simulated world to live in, populated by colorful talking ponies that seem to transcend the limitations of normal holodeck characters.
From another perspective, Twilight Sparkle and her friends must deal with strangers from another world who make claims that shake the very foundations of Equestrian history, science and philosophy. Can even the Magic of Friendship stand up to the possibility that the world is a simulation? Or do the ponies have what it take to prove to the strangers the truth of their existence?

My favorite episodes of Star Trek were the ones that dealt with philosophical issues, like when Data had to go on trial to prove he was a person. In this story the crew of the Enterprise have to deal with how they treat an entire civilization of colorful ponies living in their holodeck while they also have to deal with a crisis.
347300 I agree completely. That is the primary reason why my favorite was ST Voyager. They had to make the hard choices on their own with no backup, no resupply, and no allies to turn to.

It is a tricky thing. By the year 2394, Holograms are considered true lifeforms. A number even serve on starships as crew with rights of their own. I'm guessing that the Enterprise in this story is the Enterprise D, and it is a few decades too early. More please.

547445 Well, it would also have to be the first couple seasons as well, since Professor Moriarty was also accepted as a 'living' hologram, and it stands to reason that they would have tests after that to determine sentience if any holodeck characters displayed unusually self-aware traits.

Moriarty was accepted as a curiousity, but if he was genuinely thought of as being alive I think they would have treated him better then leaving him to effectively rot in the holodeck memory. Sure, they had no idea that he was aware in there but you'd still think Picard would have moved his program somewhere. Ship in a Bottle was the episode that featured him making trouble for the Enterprise after his program was reactivated.
Fun fact, Ship in a Bottle is around when this fic is set. So this is season 6 TNG.

As I recall Moriarty was said flat out in his first appearance as having consciousness/sapience. And that Starfleet was asked to find a way to make it possible for him to leave the holodeck. Unfortunately, by the time season six rolled around no progress had been made though to the best of my knowledge they were still trying. And of course the EMH program also became sentient on Voyager and certain other hologrophic life forms came to exist by the time of Voyager's series finale, so it seems to be a case where the circumstances are what determines whether or not a holographic individual can come to be a living being.

So far this is hitting on the high notes of any good Star Trek: TNG episode, Talky and techy, but with that unique MLP aspect thrown in to make things all the more satisfying and enjoyable. I don't know what your plans are but i will be watching.
