"Earth pony magic. We aren't just ponies without wings and hooves. We got our own magic and it ain't all about growin' things, though that's a big part."
*horns
Also, damn, just when I thought that the situation couldn't get worse...
"Here are your orders. You may not let anyone destroy your collar. You must use lethal force to stop them if needed. You may not let anyone destroy the chains that hold you, nor may you unlatch them, nor allow anyone else to unlatch them. You must use lethal force to stop them if needed. You are forbidden to go out that door for the rest of your life." She pointed at the exit to her workroom. "You are forbidden to allow anyone else to drag you or carry you through the door. You must use lethal force to stop them if needed."
There wasn't an order for teleporting out of there, so if one of the Harmony team were to order him to do so without him knowing it was one of them, as it was mentioned earlier that it worked for changelings, it seems like that would be a way out of there, because she didn't forbid him to leave the room itself.
That could make sense, as whenever Discord is turned into stone in a way that binds his magic, so he can't just escape in a minute or two, the stone itself resists magic, so assuming that the theory is true, the stone, while it didn't protect Discord from being killed, it resisted at least some of the soul-shattering effect from the Godslayer Hammer/Hammer of Celestia, so he isn't completely gone. This would be the same reason that Discord's memories weren't overwritten by Anon's reality warping in Not The Hero, namely that the stone resists magic.
7753883 That's a solid theory. Or maybe, his soul was shattered, but not not necessarily destroyed completely, so fragments of his soul was pieced together enough for them to be sentient, and seeks to be reconstructed into a whole again. And released. Or since Discord is the Chaos Avartar, and I don't think the title was transferred to anyone else, his magic still keeps him alive somehow? Maybe the chaos going on attracted him? I Guess and hope we'll find out soon! So hyped...
"BrOKe. yOu. nOT yOu bUt Him bUT useless. sO YoU. FrEE tHeM, reVerSe ENd, uNPiN Me. lET me GO. Let iT eND." The voice was openly sobbing now. "bROkEn. pIEcEs. hUrTS iT HuRTs wANt STop. eNd It. ENd. UNpIn. FReE mE."
Wait... "You, not you but him". Then he says, "broken pieces. It hurts. End it now". I'm guessing this is the other universe's Discord, the one where Spike broke the statue, and Discord's mind is still intact, only fractured between the pieces. Or maybe his soul. I wonder if I'm going to be right...
I don't like thinking like that, but my pity for Discord is evaporating quickly. Because Spike has a point about him not caring about dragging a whole world to its doom.
7753855 Teleporting is definitely still fair game. As is knocking a hole in the wall, tunneling out, or shooting through the ceiling. With some quick means of rendering him unconscious, the collar could be cut. That leaves the necessity of some very fast acting laxatives to deal with those crystals. Now I'm wondering how feasible it would be to simply bisect Discord somewhere above his intestines, and have him do his quick flicker to restored state healing trick before he dies. Of course, that would require some quick timing with cutting the collar, as you'd presumably want him awake to heal himself.
And good to know everyone is still completely dismissing Spike as a threat. Here's still hoping we see a team up between Harmony and Opposition Spike at some point and one or both of them go snag that tree cutting do the re-harmonization thing while nobody is paying attention to them.
You may not let anyone destroy the chains that hold you, nor may you unlatch them, nor allow anyone else to unlatch them.
Notice the problem here? The fatal flaw of that order is that if someone got the idea to dig through the wall and had the means of doing so, they could dig around the parts holding the chains in place, and since it’s not actually destroying or unlatching the chains, it wouldn’t be ruled out by the order.
And yep, it's good to see that they're failing to see how Spike could possibly be a threat; after all, what could a baby dragon possibly do? This is the same trap that Anon from Not The Hero would fall into, namely that he doesn't care about "side characters".
Lastly, in Not The Hero, Discord says that dragons see those that they love as their possessions, and he actually does trigger greed growth that way in the story, so it's theoretically possible for Spike to have his greed growth triggered by a threat to his loved ones. The fact that the Opposition team underestimates him could partially be explained by the fact that Secret of My Excess (the episode in which Spike undergoes greed growth) didn't happen in their universe, because Discord didn't get turned to stone at the end of his first appearance, and that's a Season 2 episode, so it likely didn't happen.
BRAIN CELLS FIRING! I can't remember the bloody story but I remember that Matrisse had her crystals which could cancel out the chaos and they wired crystals to Discord horn and therefore making him a vegetable but I remember Discord saying that his blood can cancel out Matrisse. If what I am remembering is true Matrisse will burn off canceling the Harmony between the six as Twilight no longer has the opposites therefore nullifying the spells on Discord therefore meaning that his magic will have the restrictions lifted of it.
I just realized that could potentially just kill Discord because that means the crystals could activate as the collar cannot stop them
7754711 If Twilight soaked the Diadem of Order in Discord's blood, that might work, but she's not planning on it. That's not part of the ritual.
Perhaps Discord should have suggested that as the ritual, but there's no guarantee he'd be alive or conscious by the time the Diadem stopped working, and besides, Twilight's obsession with cleanliness and order means that if she had to soak her precious Order gem in the blood of Chaos, she'd balk at it and probably wouldn't do it.
7755105 Confounded again by the brilliant author! I will find something to try and work it out!
that's a curiosity I had not considered. Dain the King of the Caribous may still be on this planet. We have not heard of him being defeated amounting to the possibility that he may want to prevent order because that would go against his amulet of Disorder or Winnie for that instance. I can see the whole universe that you have created to affect this.
It might be that the hammer shatters souls, but while Discord is bounded in stone then so is his soul and he can't die. So Discord suffers with a broken soul and want it to end.
7755381 It has been stated that the Element Bearers in this world have been very, very aggressive about threats -- they apparently killed Tirek and Ahuizotl. It's also been stated that Equestria in general was seriously weakened. Therefore it is entirely possible that Dainn tried to invade, thinking that after Discord's being turned to stone, Equestria's weakness would make it easy prey... and most likely the Opposition Elements either wiped out the caribou or mind-wiped them all, since they seem to favor ironic punishments (Tirek, who gains youth and strength from stealing magic, was aged to death; Ahuizotl, who wanted to condemn the southern portions of Equestria and the lands directly below it to sweltering heat, gets heated up to the point where he explodes), so mind-wiping them after they've lobotomized so many of their females might be one of those ironically fitting punishments.
Winaypaqori has no interest in doing anything other than sitting on his hoard and adding to it from time to time.
Dainn would never have been motivated by the desire to prevent order; he's not an actual Disharmony Bearer. In fact he rules over a very orderly, though evil, society. He would have been motivated by the desire to spread his ideology and increase caribou power, though. Which is also a thing Chrysalis would have freely and gladly worked with the Bearers to stop; there is no real love that Changelings can use in the caribou society, or at least so little that Chrysalis would have seen the caribou as a threat to her food source and would have mobilized her changelings. In fact the bearers might not even have been involved, because changelings are uniquely suited to destroying the caribou. Replace many, many red collared slaves with changelings. Caribou won't notice the difference because all red collars act pretty similar and the caribou see them as interchangeable. When the signal from Chrysalis comes through, the changelings transform and murder their caribou "owners", decimating the society and making them easy prey for the reindeer to come in and mop up. Chrysalis wouldn't bother with this in the regular time stream, or in Not the Hero, because as long as the caribou aren't expanding into Equestria they're no threat, but if they tried...
You know, I love Chrysalis, really. She's a completely unrepentant villain who is totally driven by her own interests and the interests of her followers, but because one of her interests is keeping ponies alive and capable of feeling love, there are so many situations where she could be drawn in to ally with the good guys while still being a completely unrepentant villain. There are not many characters like that. I don't care how you whitewash or woobify him, Sombra was never going to ally with Equestria for anything less than a world-destroying threat. Tirek is an entirely self-serving asshole, the Sirens are stuck in another world and everyone else reformed. But I'm so glad they didn't reform Chrysalis at the end of season 6 because damn, we really do need an actual villain villain to stay a villain for once, and she's quite possibly the best one for story possibilities.
`Dayum that's a big chunk of writing. Keep it up! I'm hoping the story is near the end (In a good way!) but I'm here for whatever the haul is. You've got me pretty hooked.
This is an absolutely horrifying story but it's breathtaking by all the detail and care you put into it. All of yours are. Oh, I wish I wrote as well as you. My wording is always so awkward and clunky and yours are so crystal clear. Your stories always completely captivate me.
I hope one day I become half the writer you are.
I mean, even the littlest of details that you include, and all of it in character...
And this one in particular...You write scenes as haunting and enchanting as Dean Koontz, perhaps even more so. And even as dark as it is, there's still that gleam of hope...that somehow, friendship will prevail and Discord and his friends will save the day...
This chapter had absolutely EVERYTHING! Pinks traveling through the in-between (I like to think of it as the 4th wall). Spike takes time to talk to tenacious terrors. Oh and freaking changelings lots and lots of freaking changelings.
If I knew how, I'd censor my own theory on our little mystery chaos, but I don't but will press on regardless.
It's Opposition Discord, quite obviously, his soul shattered and held together by the magic he used to corrupt the elements. Opposition Discord seems to think ahead more then our fun loving Draconequus, so when he tainted the Elements he added a tiny safeguard JUST IN CASE they still manage to stone him. Discord does not like being stone....at all. So by putting a seed of his actual essence inside the elements, hidden within the flaws already corrupting them, he could work to undo the spell holding him while still in stone. Then Spike smashes him and those portions of his essence act as a link to keep his shattered soul from falling utterly apart and in extreme agony. Unpin them means that you need to remove the corruption from the elements for him to finally sink into oblivion. It's also worth noting that this....fractured state OppDisc is in is what is likely keeping Chaos from choosing another Avatar. Akin to how Order has not chosen one despite Maltrisse being fractured in a disturbingly similar way. He OppDis knows who the candidate is for his power, and is trying to reach them through that connection to finally be put to rest.
7754396 We don't actually know at this point if a new Avatar has been chosen.
Discord was very little when Mayhem died, but did not ascend to be the Chaos Avatar until he was an adult. He had already been chosen by Chaos by virtue of being the previous avatar's child, but he wasn't offered the position until he was an adult. And he was offered it at a point where almost anyone would have taken it -- you're dead, your lover and your little sister have also been murdered, do you want to stay dead or come back to life as a god? Very few people would say no to that, and most who would have no affinity with Chaos.
So it is possible that Chaos has already chosen Spike, but will wait to ascend him until he's in a position where he has overwhelming motivation to say yes. The lack of a currently active Avatar doesn't itself suggest that Opposition Discord still exists in any real sense.
7765517 Torture, rape, imprisonment, mind breaking,... and the list goes on. If you can't handle anything like that I would recommend skipping this fic. It gets pretty intense in some parts.
This is getting waaaay too good. As much as I was happy this new chapter came out (plus was around 30k words in size no less), I am oh so frustrated that it's once again, waiting time for me. Longing, waiting and hoping.
I'm not very tenacious regarding patience.
Now that this is getting to the main event(s), I'm going to suffer even more.
The whole escape thing with AJ and Rarity was brilliant, but unfortunately for naught in the end, which was a bit sad I admit, would have liked it more if they actually escaped to Ponyville. But since Shy and Rainbow were caught anyway, I suppose it's better that they didn't manage to flee.
At least the group is together again, sans Twilight.
But good heavens, that Celestia... grrrr. She is so far gone, and became even more stupid over time, after killing Luna.
She is hurting and longing so much to bring Luna back that she is actually READY TO KILL TWILIGHT? Even taking her friends hostage, with the actual intend to hurt them, should she not cooperate?
Letting the opposites break Fluttershy's wings if they deem it necessary, what the hell?!
How on earth does she believe Luna would even remotely react positive about that? Luna would slap her black and blue in utter disgust and hate, no question.
But then again, Celestia is so dead set on getting Luna back, since the 'opportunity' was presented to her, that she'd do anything it seems. Her regret and suffering was strong enough, so that this dim hope of getting Luna back made her blind to what Luna's reaction would be.
She doesn't even think about how Luna would react, she just wants to get her back so badly, all she can dream about is a happy reunion with her.
Outright delusional of course.
What makes this even worse though, is that fact that she is willing to kill Twilight, or torture her friends should they become uncooperative, without being corrupted herself. Sure, I hate how the opposites act like cat poop. But hell even if we hate their guts, at least you can always excuse them for it, since Discord had seriously jinxed them.
Celestia though? She was never even turned or flipped by him. That's why I hate her even more for it.
For all the Opposites of the mane 6 have done to innocent Discord, Celestia is the one who deserves the greatest punishment.
7782859 Well it only occurred to me in the chapter where Discord wanted to kill himself. His reasons reminded me of how Q wanted that too; He was tired of how tormenting his immortality had been. Once he'd realized everything and tried to live with it, he had finally given up. They both have people who want him saved and not convinced on killing himself, Fluttershy in Discords case. Like Discord, he was captured and couldn't use his powers for 300 years and wanted to just commit suicide. Granted, they where not captured/imprisoned for the same things but had something involving with it. For both of them it was torture, but Discord's was literal of course. Oh, and with either of theit suicides, it would have dier consequences. Im sure you know what i mean. It just reminded me of the episode, really. But that is basically all . After that it's not too similar, I know, but I just like to think of it that way. Gives me the 'Trek Nostalgia', I guess.
Thanks for the reply, btw! You are one of my favourite authors on this site, all your stories get me so addicted (in a good way) to waking up an hour early before school to read more xD I can't wait for the next chapter comes out! There are so many loose things that are begging to be connected!
If he had been in his right mind I would agree with you, but he wasn't thinking straight. (Not that thinking straight was ever something Discord excelled at.) He was desperate, had been raped and tortured over and over and felt there was no way out. Being the spirit of rebellion he did the only thing he could think of doing--get revenge.
Also it's possible that part of him doesn't consider this world as real, despite the horrible torture he's enduring. And by that I mean that he's visited so many worlds and knows there are so many universes, that destroying one world wouldn't really matter to him, especially if the inhabitants of that world are out to kill him. It's only until Harmony Fluttershy arrives and tells him why it's a bad idea that the penny drops.
Creepy voice that spike heard is what I will be talking about here. Quite simply I think it was was opposition Discord. Discord mentions that the Godhammer will shatter the soul along with the body with corresponds with the section where the voice states broken pieces and it continues to call Spike a killer and the only being that Spike has killed is Spike. I presume Discord used his own essence in altering the elements and therefore is entirely shattered but is now trapped to this plane of existence.
Ouch. Hitting that cliffhanger so hard physically hurt. Time to play the waiting game.
Anyways, the single greatest part so far has been that segment of null space with Discord. I'm not totally sure how he's still alive, but it's honestly terrifying and raised goosebumps. I honestly kinda hope Discord gets free, rebuilds(?) his other side and they go on a rampage and destroy the opposition world, but I would guess it's more likely that Opposition Spike is going to become the Chaos Avatar.
I honestly don't see this ending well for the opposition world. Even in the best case scenario where Discord and the ponies escape and fix the opposition ponies Celestia is still nuts, Chrysalis probably has enough power to conquer Equestria, and the elements of opposition are probably going to be haunted by what they did.
I imagine Fluttercruel learning about Twilight's plan is going to deharmonize the elements of opposition. This can give Discord a changed to get away, but the crystals would still kill him eventually. Hopefully the two spikes can do something.
The creepy voice harmony spike heard was probably the shattered pieces of opposition discord...wasn't it?
Chuckfinley's "A Persimmon Spring" isn't canon to this universe, but I took inspiration from it to flesh out my version of this universe' Chrysalis.
Huh. I was trying to add this as a story note and instead it came out as a comment. Weird.

EDIT:
Well then, it is Discord. Looking back at all the evidence supports this. Even if it is too predictable.
Or perhaps it's the Tree of Harmony. With all it has been through, perhaps it has been affected like the Elements of Opposition?
Although the theory that it is that world's Discord might be true. Seeing that no new Chaos Avatar has been chosen.
7753855

What makes this even worse though, is that fact that she is willing to kill Twilight, or torture her friends should they become uncooperative, without being corrupted herself.
Sure, I hate how the opposites act like cat poop. But hell even if we hate their guts, at least you can always excuse them for it, since Discord had seriously jinxed them.
Celestia though? She was never even turned or flipped by him. That's why I hate her even more for it.
For all the Opposites of the mane 6 have done to innocent Discord, Celestia is the one who deserves the greatest punishment.
GOD I JUST CAN'T WAIT!...
Easy now... take a breath.
Great job on this chapter, anyway!
Now for the conclusion...

In what way? I'm a big fan of "Death Wish" but I don't really see the connection.
You are one of my favourite authors on this site, all your stories get me so addicted (in a good way) to waking up an hour early before school to read more xD
I can't wait for the next chapter comes out! There are so many loose things that are begging to be connected!
7776471 pretty intense is an understatement haha
but I LOVE IT *.*

Everyone's like "ah yes, the disembodied voice of opposition discord" and here I was thinking we'd finally heard from Matrisse.
100/10 writing bc this ties back to big macs philosophy 👍🏻
