I hate to say it but...they save Discord, save Princess Twilight...then what? The Elements are corrupted, with Evil!Twi looking to kill the world through order one way or another, their Celestia is a nutjob who'll probably try to bring Luna back with or without another alicorn, and it's implied Chrysalis has practically taken over. And if they somehow depose all three...who keeps the Sun/Moon cycle going? Maybe Cadance, but that assumes she's in any condition to if she's even alive.
Okay, lungs, you may resume breathing. Much appreciated author. I can wait for the next chapter.

Though if I might nitpick... (apologies)
the conversing between fluttershy and discord was great, but... it seems like he caught on quite early that it was H fluttershy and not O fluttershy. That's not a problem, but I kind of thought he would break down as soon as he figured it out. The whole conversation would honestly have been a bit better if it was placed towards the end of the story, in a "why did you bother saving me" segment. All I know is that if this happened to me, I wouldn't care who rescued me, so long as they did it fast.
6898227 Oh, he caught on immediately that it was Fluttershy and not Fluttercruel. Even exhausted, starved and despairing, Discord is quick to notice details and use them to size up a situation. Spike had told him that they had come over. Discord didn't believe him, but when he saw a Fluttershy with purple hair, claiming to be his Fluttershy, he believed her. The thing is, Fluttercruel had convinced him that his Fluttershy wasn't his friend, and had only been using him -- so his reaction wasn't to break down or to be grateful that he's being rescued. He'd decided to destroy this planet in a grandiose suicide plan because he'd given up on even wanting to be rescued -- he thought he had no friends, would never have any friends, and even if he escaped, he'd be alone for the rest of his life, and after having experienced friendship (and being generally in despair, and having used his belief in his friendship with Fluttershy as the only thing that kept him going in his hellish situation), he didn't want to live that way.
His immediate reaction was rage, because he thought that Fluttershy had lied to him to control him, secretly hated him, and was responsible for his current state of anguish, both because if he hadn't believed he had a friend it wouldn't hurt to find out he didn't, and because he came to this world to keep Fluttershy from being upset with him. He didn't break down until Fluttershy managed to convince him again that she really is his friend, at which point his general levels of despair kept interfering with his ability to believe that anything good could possibly be happening (which is why, as soon as he's convinced Fluttershy is his friend, he jumps to the conclusion that this isn't real, and shortly after that gets onto the whole "don't rescue me, save yourself" thing.)
6898281 ok gotcha. Btw, the proper term for "planetcide" is actually ' "xenocide", or at least it is in most sci -fi stuff. Admittedly it generally classifies to alien planets, but I think this qualifies.
6898586 I didn't want to use it because "xenocide" very specifically means destroying an alien species -- it comes from roots that mean "killing of the strange". Killing an alien planet or killing an alien species could both count as xenocide, but killing your own planet (even if it's an exact copy) doesn't really seem to fit. "Omnicide" would make more sense in this context, but Fluttershy, while smart, doesn't read the sort of books that would lead her to know that word.
Called it! Celly's as nuts as the rest if she thinks that Lulu will be happy somebody died for her to pulled out of her rest. And even worse she doesn't seem to care what will happen to H-Twilight's home without her or her friends.
To bad H-Rainbow rushed instead of meeting up with Fluttershy; She was doing so well in the planing until then. And go O-Spike, you might be able to save your world.
Out of all of your stories, this is the one that I am following with the most anticipation, so you won't catch me complaining about these unusually frequent updates. I got some major catharsis out of Fluttershy finally, finally finding Discord. It hardly makes everything "all better" but it's certainly a step in the right direction.
Very excited, as always, to see where this goes! There isn't enough hyperbole out there that allows me to express how much I enjoy your writing. ^_^
6898616 I just hate how much of a derp harmony RD was at the end here again, it's just so typical for her. Due to her stupid behaviour, Fluttershy is in extreme danger now.
Rainbow is still much too full of herself, instead of just thinking about taking out Twilight, she should have also considered that ALL the others are with her, including evil PINKI PIE.
Then she spiels down her evil friend's capabilities to take her on, understimating them as always.
From her experiences with her own Pinkie for example, this means her evil counterpart would be more much more then just a little bit 'scary and crazy', explicitly to be labeled a serious threat among them all. Did she forget all the impossible feats her own Pinkie does and did to her? What about the time she couldn't even get away from Pinkie with her birthday present in her bag? Pinkie had no problems to be one step ahead of her or gain in on her. In addition she had a really hard time to even drag her to the barn, speaking of Pinkie's physical strenght.
Did she really expect, even if she takes out Twilight, she'd have an easy game with the freakin' evil counterparts of ALL her 'friends'? That was already the first inane planning she went through with while shadowing them, tough it did feel like something Rainbow would think so we can facepalm. The second worst came then, when she consiedered and finally opted to help put out that fire, leaving her safe cover behind, just because she didn't want Shy to be mad at her for starting a forest fire.
Really? They are in life and death situations, time and security is of the outmost essence, yet still she went out of her cover, exposing herself to the world and risking a ton of 'go wrongs', just to stop a fire that was set by Fluttershy anyway? ... And then of course justice was served by a flying frying pan hitting her in the face, served by pinkie who is just 'a little scary' to her, making this an absolute epic fail action. ... Sometimes I really wonder if she doesn't deserve to be turned into pastry by the mad evil Pinkie, there seems to be lot of that in her head anyway.
Gotta love those character flaws, live and in the flesh. I mean, come on! Didn't she realize if she fails knocking them out, which had a much higher chance then she anticipated, Fluttershy would be left all on her own if she had any issues freeing Discord (something she didn't think of as well)?.
Great, now Fluttershy will be tricked, and then Discord can enjoy another round of torture by Fluttercruel, Mad Pie, and Twitlight Spunkle.
*head meets desk*
WHY DASH? WHY YOU SO STUPID?! *groans*
The only party left now is the Canterlot group, which Wacky Celestia also underestimates, fortunately. Wacky C. can suck some stallion's phallus for all I care, at least Twilight wasn't swayed, had realized she went down the drain, and is now using that agreement to buy time.
On the other hand, I would really like to see Luna coming back to life, only so I can see how she smashes Celestia's face in, with a quick hard right hoof that catapults Wacky C. around the room, for her betrayal on sacrificing an innocent other princess, just to get her back. And since they have long faces, that ought to hurt Celestia a lot, even as she wonders 'Why so mad at me Luna?'.
I am so insanely pleased with this chapter and dang, RD just had to screw things over. Blergh. Also, glad those letter-analyzing skillz came in handy. Twilight is so in a bind, it is not even funny...I wonder how things will get fixed in this world eventually. The Harmony tree branch to the Rescue!
On the one claw, The Harmony gang escape with Discord (and hopefully the other spike), but he dies from the crystals. On the other claw, The Harmony gang can't win and every living thing is devoured by creatures from another dimension.
6904443 Yeah, technically I probably should have one there, because even in the best case scenario -- say they reharmonize the Opposition Team, get the crystals out of Discord and get him home -- Discord's going to be an emotional wreck for quite some time, Celestia's going to have to deal with the knowledge that all it will take is her sister's death to send her into madness and despair, and the Opposition world will still be pretty hosed. Celestia will still be in despair, maybe worse after her hope was snatched from her. Luna will still be dead, Chrysalis will still have inordinate amounts of power, and if Cadance turns out to be alive it would be a politically terrible idea to rescue her, because Equestria is relying on Changelings to hold things together -- but a reharmonized Twilight would go and rescue Cadance, thus starting a shitstorm that Opposition Equestria might not survive. And all of the Opposition team will have to live with the memories of what they did when they were corrupted.
But if I put a tragedy tag on a story this dark everyone's going to assume they know how it ends. I already have to deal with endless "No! You're going to kill Discord, aren't you!" and "No! The Mane 6 are going to get tortured and killed!" and all sorts of similar wild horrible speculations, and if I put a tragedy tag on it many people would automatically assume that that means rocks fall, everyone dies, and nope out of the rest of the story. So I went with sad instead, because everything that's going on is pretty damn sad.
I feel like many problems could have been solved here if Fluttershy had had the fairly simple foresight to bring some bolt cutters with her in the first place. I understand she probably thought she could restore Discord's powers so it didn't matter, but given that it was possible she wouldn't be able to, and the obvious likelihood he'd be tied up somehow, having something to spring him seems pretty basic to me.
My friend told me about this when it barely was even started, and now I'm glad. Now I cannot stop telling my friends about how well written it is, and then they mock that I'm praising a fanfic as though it were a novel by any well known author. Then I remind them how works like Fifty Shades of Grey got their starting. That usually shuts them up. Though thanks to reading Breaking Chaos right before getting sick with a fever, my fever induced dreams were haunted by an evil Applejack, and she's my favorite pony. I've gotten off course a tad, but that's because I love this story. Keep up the good work!
6898131 They do still have that cutting from their Tree of Harmony that could theoretically re-harmonize opposition verse's tree, which might fix up their elements too. We'll have to see if anything comes of that. If they do get around to that, I imagine it would be the fitting ironic punishment for opposition-6. Have them restored to their original selves, but with full memories of all the horrible shit they did.
7234027 My problem is that, I feel the corruption goes much deeper then their elements. I am doubtful re harmonizing their elements will instantly make Opposition 6 turn good. With all the years they lived like that and all the horrible things they have done, it is more likely that the one part of them that still wanted to be good, is long gone, their have been many occasions where they were told how their actions were wrong, and they simply did not care, so fixing their elements at this point likely wont do much other than take away the suppose lie that Opposition Twilight is using to keep Discord. Its obvious Twilight wants power and to control Discord, fixed elements or not, I am doubtful Opposition Twilight is giving him up without a fight.
7243271 I thought it was explained that the elements and their associated bearers were only "half-corrupted", as in their true selves are meshed in with their opposites, the conflict and and contradiction being what drove them varying degrees of insane. Fluttershy still wants to be kind and care for animals, but also has a compulsion to be cruel and abusive, and hates herself for what she has become.
Granted, even if purging the elements did remove the conflicting drives that are the source of the problem, there's no guarantee it would fix any of the psychological damage they've accumulated, so they still might be pretty messed up. Pinkie might have just developed a lasting taste for pony flesh now. And there's a good chance it wouldn't do anything for Twilight, since opposition verse Discord never messed with her element, and she fused in a shard of Matrice by herself. I don't know if re-harmonizing would push out Order as well as Chaos.
7245044 If that was the case then the half of them that was good would be struggling to break free and we would see signs of this, like when our Fluttershy was talking down Opposition Fluttershy, surely if anything Op. Fluttershy would show some sign of our Fluttershy being right and that she can't help it, yet this corrupted side of them seems to flow to naturally to be something influencing them. As you said fix the element might take away the corruption but it would not fix the damage already done, also if you think of it, it would be too easy of a scapegoat, if they just instantly became good, I would say once they are fixed of their problem, our Mane 6 would have to remind them of all the good things they did in the past as well as try to reveal Chrysalis as the liar she is. Before we could see some progress. But even then they might not ever get their opposites to full go back to the way they were, at best they could hope that removing the corruption would make their opposites easier to compromise with, as in they would let Discord and the other go, but would warn them if they ever catch any of them their again they won't be so nice, giving indication that they are still messed up, they can just be compassionate now.
... *slow measured inhale* ... GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH ... And that, Mrs. Rogers, is how your Discord, this story, everything your characters do and say makes me feel. Dear lord, I've cried so much reading this. I hope things go a little more smooth for everyone's favorite draconequus.
Now, I'm going to go to sleep, have some (hopefully good) dreams and pray to a god I don't believe in for the safety of a fictional character. Looking forward to an update.
Being a huge fan of both Not the Hero and Elements of Opposition i read read both multiple times, trying to break down the lore, but there has been something driving me nuts and I tried to determine what it is in my free time. I worked out what it was. The mane 6 are worried the if Discord dies then the title of Avatar of Chaos will pass onto someone else considering the overwhelming evidence supporting this it makes sense. Everybody is also mentioning in the comments that the opposition world is basically screwed with the changelings and the fact that the opposition elements will be forced to deal with what they have done but they have not taken into consideration is that The Avatar of Chaos for the opposition world is now open since Op.Discord was smashed. I don't know whether Chaos considers H.Discord to be a temporary one
7698568 Yes. The Avatar position will absolutely pass on to someone else. Opposition Twilight doesn't know this, because Opposition Zecora is dead and will have no chance to tell her. And our team don't consider it particularly relevant -- they just want to rescue their Discord. But it is a certainty that within a few decades, someone will be offered the position. (It isn't an instantaneous thing. Discord was about 30 or so before he became the official Chaos Avatar, though he was using chaos magic and he was on the short list of options before that; Mayhem died when he was about 4 or so. So the world went a few decades without one.)
7698811 I would love to see Opposition Twilight's reaction to this information. To know that a being whom is powerful as Discord and probably doesn't care about killing in this destroyed world is going to come and cause even more chaos.
Honestly taking out opposition Twilight wasn't a bad idea. Without her the opposition team would fall apart. Rainbow just didn't think oh Pinkie being Pinkie.
Now we gotta hope Fluttershy is able to tell RD is not her RD and find a way to fight her off. Or at least hold her off until the others come and help.
I'm a bit worried about Rainbow though. As far as Opposition Twilight knows the others are dead so she won't have much of a reason to keep her alive. The only thing I can think of is holding her hostage for Fluttershy.
Step 1. Save Discord. Step 2. Save Mane 4 Step 3. Save Twilight. Step 4. Save Rainbow Dash. Step 5. Save Discord TO save Twilight. Step 6. Save Twilight to save the Mane 4 and RD. Step 7. Get the hell outta Dodge.
Why does Luna, after everyone is done fighting and gone home, not simply travel to their world for a little while and help them out? It’s said in the story itself that she’s not doing much. Luna would be able to completely salvage Equestria, and then return to her own universe.
Ah, the thrill that flows through me when this updates is indescribable. Pretty much the same feeling when any of your fics update, really.
This Equestria is pretty much screwed.
Okay, lungs, you may resume breathing. Much appreciated author. I can wait for the next chapter.

Love how this isn't a tragic fic, while the far more light hearted "Not The Hero" is.
Thank god.

Yeah, technically I probably should have one there, because even in the best case scenario -- say they reharmonize the Opposition Team, get the crystals out of Discord and get him home -- Discord's going to be an emotional wreck for quite some time, Celestia's going to have to deal with the knowledge that all it will take is her sister's death to send her into madness and despair, and the Opposition world will still be pretty hosed. 6904494 I was thinking best case scenario might involve harmony Luna taking over for opposition Celestia, for at least a few years.
Opposition Celestia seems like she'd step down, if she thought she could, and harmony world ran for 1.000 years without Luna.
But yeah, Chrysalis complicates everything.
6904494
And I'm the easter bunny SURPRISE!
Reeeeaaaallllyyyy? ... Think again, fan who wrote this assumption!

I thought it was explained that the elements and their associated bearers were only "half-corrupted", as in their true selves are meshed in with their opposites, the conflict and and contradiction being what drove them varying degrees of insane. Fluttershy still wants to be kind and care for animals, but also has a compulsion to be cruel and abusive, and hates herself for what she has become.

So.....this story keeps getting more disturbing. I hope for an update soon, it's so good!
This is the only my little pony fanfiction I found truly captivating and enjoyable. In fact, it is the only fanfiction of any kind to entertain me.
Being a huge fan of both Not the Hero and Elements of Opposition i read read both multiple times, trying to break down the lore, but there has been something driving me nuts and I tried to determine what it is in my free time.

Yes.
Man nothing can ever be easy can it.
Step 2. Save Mane 4
Step 3. Save Twilight.
Step 4. Save Rainbow Dash.
Step 5. Save Discord TO save Twilight.
Step 6. Save Twilight to save the Mane 4 and RD.
Step 7. Get the hell outta Dodge.
I think I figured out a good ending for the fic.
Why does Luna, after everyone is done fighting and gone home, not simply travel to their world for a little while and help them out? It’s said in the story itself that she’s not doing much. Luna would be able to completely salvage Equestria, and then return to her own universe.

You assume Opposition Celestia would allow Harmony Luna to leave.
