The Griffin Kingdom was devastated during the recent and failed war with Equestira. Left on their own, the griffins must find their way as they struggle to rebuild their home. With the nation divided between practitioners of the new parliament system and loyalists to the old monarchy, Eriviara Orn Vorastrix, finds herself in a prime position to take advantage of the growing tensions. She's determined to bring the Kingdom to heel, even if she's 'only' a female and, according to many, unfit for anything besides being a 'nest tender.'

This is a tale of the Griffins from the world of Dusk Quill. The events of this story take place directly after the events of The Griffon War: A Soldier's Memoirs.

Distance can drive us apart. It can also bring us closer together.

After all is said and done, and the ponies have gone their separate ways, the only way they have to keep in touch is through letters.

After insisting to join her, little Apple Bloom gets lost in the woods after chasing a mysterious mare hiding amongst the poison joak. She stumbles upon a town completely isolated within the Ever Free Forest, but something about this town just doesn't feel right...

On a cloudy day, four friends find refuge at Rarity's Boutique over a barrel of cider. But when Twilight Sparkle flies home from Canterlot to see her friends early, can she understand what's really going on?

As the townsponies grieve, the mysterious Special Agent Bentgrass from Their Majesties' Royal Investigative Service arrives at the Books and Branches library and drags Twilight into a world she's only read about: lies, corruption, suspicion, and murder.

Faced with an indifferent police force, and Agent Bentgrass's infuriating methods, Twilight must put the pieces together and catch the killer. But as blood continues to spill and questions pile up, one thing is terrifyingly clear: in the dark of the Everfree, much more is at play than mere murder.

War comes to Equestria: with despair, with starvation, with suffering and with sacrifice. And the ponies must learn how to keep true to their values while surviving not just the rigors of battle, but the desolation of total war.
