Princess Luna's daughter, Dawn, has one simple wish for her birthday that is anything but simple to grant. She wants to see her father. Problem is, he was banished for 1,000 years and despite her insisting he is not a bad pony and that there is still good in him, she may never get the chance to find out. How can a mother who is also a demi-Goddess and Princess of Equestria bear the weight of refusing her child's deepest, most fervent wish, especially when she was the one who had to destroy him in the first place?

He is a shadow. And soon, perhaps, he's not even that.

Luna give birth to the first of the next generation of ponies. Her daughter, Moonbeam, is a very powerful Alicorn filly. However, she cannot harvest nor control her powers. Luna seeks help from one of the last ponies she ever wanted to talk to only to find out that her daughter is in danger. With Moonbeam being so young and so power, it will be really easy for anypony to use her powers to their advantage...Anypony.

Sombra loves the night. It's calm and peaceful, and helps him relax from the stress of the day. He knows that somepony out there controls it, and wishes he could find him or them and thank her, but he dares not leave the empire to it's own devices.

A prequel story to "The Birthday Wish"

A millenium in exile on the Moon took its toll on Princess Luna's memory. When she was restored by the Elements of Harmony, not every single memory was returned perfectly intact to her. A select few - the most guarded - were left where she had placed them centuries ago, locked away deep within the realms of her mind, while others returned in tattered shards, too incomprehensible to understand. On one very specific night, Luna discovers the fragment of a peculiar unicorn horn impaled in the snow. When she makes contact with the faded being residing within, the last remnants of the unicorn known as Sombra, these guarded and errant memories from a thousand and one winters ago suddenly return to her.

Everything becomes clear again. An Empire on the brink of destruction, peril, moments of great joy and sadness, love, betrayal, sinister Nightmare forces, and a would-be king whose fall help set yet another of equal tragedy in motion.

A first person, dual-narrative account of the final weeks leading up to the Crystal Empire's fateful disappearance, the coronation and downfall of Sombra, and the rise of Nightmare Moon.

Nopony knows King Sombra's past, the vows he made, the promises he broke. We know that he turned to dark magic, but not why.

This is my take on his story.

Slightly upset with Celestia's plan, Princess Luna decides to visit the Crystal Empire herself and aid the others in protecting it. This is just a short story, of what it could have been like if Luna had a larger role in the Season 3 opener.

Demons are such single-minded creatures. Make a deal with one, and you might just get more than you bargained for. All Sombra wanted to do was save Luna, but the bargain has been made, the pact signed in blood, and in the end, it shall be completed no matter what.
