The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 25th: Icy Shake Paid for This edition! · 7:53pm Apr 25th, 2019

Novel-Idea still needs help! You've given a lot already, but trying to get by in this country is not easy.

Scribbler's newest reading is Rinnaul's Fate!

Speaking of readings, I just found out ScarlettBlade's channel was shut down some time ago. D: But he's back, with a new channel and new readings! Which means all the old ones are long gone. :( And there's a whole bunch I never got to listen to...

And literally as I'm posting this blog, Midnight29 over on Pony&Wolf Productions has put out David Silver's Fallout Equestria: TV-Y!

So yes, anyway, here we are. Icy Shake approached me and was like, "Here's some bux to go back and read one story of your choosing from every author you've Troll Recommended before." And I was like "'k". Now, this isn't every author, mind you; some had no more than one complete story. More interestingly, hardly any of these are trollfics, though there are a lot of random comedies. (Also, quite a few are here because they participated in a collaboration with horizon.) Mostly though, this just ended up being "read the shortest story by this list of authors because oh god, there's so many" and even then, one person literally had 30k as their shortest. @_@ So I apologize if you got a review of a story you don't think was the best, I had a quota.

And of course, every review comes tagged as Paid Review for Icy Shake.

Pinkie Pie Legalizes Marijuana by S A D B O I
Mature: Gore
Genre: Trollfic
Pinkie Pie is going to legalize marijuana! That's a thing she can totally do herself!
To write a good political shitfic, one must take the piss out of both sides of the issue. This does precisely that. I mean, you know you're in for a good time when Applejack "overdoses" on marijuana in the first scene. Didn't need the Mature rating, the gore is all offscreen.

Look What You Made Me Do by Petrichord
Genre: Intense
New look, new attitude: Rarity's gonna fuck this Grand Galloping Gala all right.
I honestly don't know how to classify this. At first, it seems like a crackfic, with Rarity's punk style getting to her head. Everything "fuck" this and "bitch" that, very out of character, but not without cause. And then the story starts to come out. And it's just sort of dropped on us, rapid-fire, but it gets darker and darker and darker, until by the end, you're questioning everything you just read. This was an experience!

I could not believe I hadn't reviewed this already! It's a story where everyone is a blimp! Doesn't everyone love that? If you've read The Art of Friendship or My Little Lobster, this is more of the same, but it's also undoubtedly the best of Blueshift's "what if everyone was X and also Twixie?" fics. (And I realize now, it's just low-key Transformers porn…) I hope everyone has the ability to appreciate this story like I do. Because if not, I will be a very lonely boy. :'D

I must be digging way back into the soul sorrow catalogue, because the first sentence of this story is actually pretty good? Things go quickly downhill from there, though. Mostly, it was a treat watching this turn from a recap of Cadence's life and appearances in the show to something completely not that. Quite the treat.

Sequel to Lyra Visits Bon Bon in Jail
Genre: Romance/Comedy
Bon Bon has a few other secrets to divulge…
Despite the classic Super Trampoline title, this is actually one of his less wacky stories? I mean, the constant barrage of confessions format is goofy, but also a neat technique. Moreover, most of the confessions are entirely reasonable things one might expect to come from a changeling living in Ponyville who happens to be Bon Bon. It is still funny, and you get the sense that Lyra is just holding on to sanity afterward. A good, short read.

The best joke is right at the end, but there wasn't really anything else that made me laugh, and reading the whole thing pretty much isn't worth it to get to that joke. Pinkie Meets a Monster in Her Closet by Doom Trot
Review #5600!
Genre: Random
Pinkie is certain the monster in her closet wants to eat her.
I wish this had had more of a point, more sweetness, and/or less fourth-wall breaking. It starts off looking like it could be either horror or something extremely cute, then gets really goofy in a big hurry. Then it just sort of meanders to an ending, dropping a bunch of weird twists along the way. Not bad, but not great either.

I have many questions. Foremost, surprisingly, is, "Why is this anthro?" It serves nearly no purpose. I have to imagine it's part of the "X Masturbates" trend this parodies, which I honestly do not remember ever being a Thing. I must therefore assume this was the best story produced by it and all other writers gave up the trope existential despair. So, this is almost a sexual horror story, as if that were a thing, given its focus on the various urges and anatomy Tom does not have. It's really a something.

Genre: Shipping
Out of her house after the plunder vines incident, Moondancer is thrust unwittingly into a confrontation with her fillyhood friends and feelings she'd long forgotten.
I have two complaints about this story. The first is that the author — who wrote it in 24 hours for a charity drive — didn't do any editing before posting it. There are a lot of issues, some structural, some formal, and they could have been worked out. The second is that this is a love triangle story, the other point of the triangle is Rainbow Dash, and she's not treated particularly well, but the author at least acknowledges that. So what are we left with? A great premise in using the S4 premiere to move the timetable of Amending Fences up and have it resolve in Ponyville with a still-extant library. An excellent job capturing the quivering pile of tragic lesbian angst that is Moondancer. And about the only time I'll accept "I've always loved you" as a resolution to a ship. This is a romance fic for romance fans, and it is paced oddly, but if you like MoonLight, you'll like this.

The mountains dreamed so long they never knew time, but they also never expected a pink filly.
I'm going to start by giving away the reveal: this is a story about why Maud shows up as a filly in Pinkie Pride but wasn't actually present at Pinkie's first party in Cutie Mark Chronicles. The way it goes about accomplishing this explanation is nothing short of breathtaking. The language use doesn't always make sense, but watching it unfold is nevertheless stunning. The slightly off-kilter writing actually does more to convey just what 'timeless' means than I think anything more straightforward could. I feel like it's been a long time since I read a story this well written, and what I want to impress upon you is this: you may forget you're reading fanfiction for a little while at first. By the end, this is no mere fanfic.

Scootaloo is about to learn a harsh truth.
The one problem with this story is that the description sets you up to figure out one of the best Scootaparents jokes I've ever read, well ahead of its reveal. Otherwise, this is hilarious and fantastic. Y'all know I adore laughing at the bundle of needless tragedy that is Scootaloo, and this capitalizes on it in numerous layered ways. Foremost is the question of who her dad is, and I am not spoiling that, because it's great. The rest of the story is, all things considered, an explanation of that joke, but in the sense of "Wait, how?" This was really funny, and it doesn't get too dark, so consider it Highly Recommended If You Enjoy Laughing at Scootaloo's Pain.

I would like to remind everyone that I am being paid to read these stories and also this one was asked for specifically. It was the only one asked for specifically. <.< And really, I have no regrets, I was just waiting for it to finish but oh well I guess. Y'know, horizon is such a damned good writer, it's really not fair that he's even good at writing bad. Like, the bad writing in this is at least as good as I could do, certainly as good as others have done, but then there's a three-chapter section that's all in good writing, and it makes even less sense. Not to mention there's a second layer of metafiction to this, about the author and his struggles with his sister and possibly also an explanation for the oedipal complex saturating the story. A good badfic should always have a character for its author, and this is the greatest example of that I can conjure. It doesn't matter that it's incomplete; completing it would in fact ruin some of the majesty. The final chapter (chapter 17, in case any get added after I post this review) is a mind-bending black hole of literature, where the English in fact has gone to die. I hope everyone reads this and appreciates the fuck out of it, for poor Luther's sake. :( RIP

Living as a pony in Equestria presents some new issues. And some new solutions.
I don't know what to think about a story that uses the phrase "dark, exotic vagina". Well, okay, no, I know exactly what to think about this story. Basically, the author had an idea of "here's a thing that you'd have to deal with if you got turned into a pony" and wrote down that idea and nothing more. It's not written badly, far from it, there's just nothing here, and not even the description leaves anything to the imagination

Twilight's new invention will change Equestria, that's for sure.
I didn't use the "ponies discover X" tag, because really, Twilight invents lasers. The punchline of this story could really have only been one thing, given how the setup goes, so I'll start off by saying it's predictable for the most part. Still, it's amusing, especially Pinkie's scene; more interestingly, it ends up being 28 Pranks Later but with Twilight, years before that episode ever aired. So maybe not the most memorable fic, but enjoyable for what it is.

Without Kamina and Rainbow Dash to lead them, how can the Dai-Gurren Brigade hope to hold out against the Four Generals of the Beastmen?
If that description just looks like a bunch of maybe-they-could-be-words, then this is not a story for you. As a crossover, it's completely inaccessible, and I have to admit that, though it wasn't too long ago that I watched Gurren Lagann myself, I barely got half of this. But oh boy, I wish this was longer. Arcainum perfectly captured the grandiose epic ridiculousness of TTGL, and though I have more questions than anything, I would certainly read a full-length story that explained just what the hell was going on here. What a trip!

Oddly, this is a prequel to King of the Stingers, which I read a while back and apparently never noticed was a sequel to anything? How strange. So if there's one thing I like about this, it's how it explains Derpy's appearance at the top of the Friendship Express in the third? season title sequence. But that's not what you're here for; this sets out not to absolve Spitfire of being a jerk, but to forgive her, something we have too little of, all told. It does an excellent job, and even rolls in a season five episode to boot. There's something really special about Derpy and Spitfire having a conversation in the first place, this meeting of the 'high' and the 'low' on equal footing. Good characterization, good job lending weight to everything that's said.

I'll say the story-within-the-story is rather brutal, and it is so in the ways of real-world fables and myths, not so much pony ones, which is why it's so jarring. It's another busy, pony-filled day in Ponyville.
I was impressed by this. It's kind of a half-poem, consisting of one line of prose followed by a line that starts "Clop, clop, clop" (because of course it does, the 'clop fic' joke is obvious and I started but never finished something similar long, long ago) and rhymes with the previous "Clop, clop, clop" line. Meter is not enforced, but obviously it's not supposed to be; the end effect is whimsical, befitting the slice of life story and setting in Ponyville. And yeah, it's maybe a little silly, with the plot often dictated by what could be rhymed, but goshdarn, I wasn't expecting anything like this, and I loved it.

If you've not read Mike Resnick's Will the Last Person to Leave the Planet Please Shut Off the Sun?, I recommend it, it's a great collection of short stories. And the title story, the one this fic references, is, as I recall, rather bittersweet, dealing with the last people leaving Earth and going off to space colonies. This fic starts us in a similar position, but the author has decided to go with something a good bit more heartwarming. I'm really pleased they did. This is feel-good to its core, basically the opposite of immortality angst, and I think everyone will feel as I did when they're done with it.

Dear Journal, I had the same dream again…
I want to unpack this, because I don't quite get it. At first, it seemed like it might be similar to that Screwloose fic where we never have any indicator of whether what she's experiencing is real or not. On top of that, there are these grey intrusions into the fic that really put the lie to the whole 'journal' thing… but that actually turns out to be the point. The font size of those intrusions grows, while the main narrative shrinks, which I guess is meant to show the crossing over of reality and fantasy, but I'm not sure to what end. In fact, we find out that what's happening isn't real, so it kind of undercuts the horror and leaves me wondering just what the point was. I guess that's the danger in experimental fiction, though I won't say this wasn't a worthy experiment.

Unfortunately, the problem with this story is that it kind of set up the whole 'coltfriend' thing to be a big reveal, but it's not. In fact, the whole point was the journey, and looking back on it, I can't fault it too much. This is really old, after all, which is why it felt the need to remind us just who Pinkie is and what she's like right at the start. Also I like how I’m the standard bearer for randomness.

Of course you are.

Thanks for the review!

I spent a nervous few days thinking 'PresentPerfect left a comment, but he didn't upvote it, so maybe he didn't like it...' :twilightsheepish:

Oddly, this is a prequel to King of the Stingers, which I read a while back and apparently never noticed was a sequel to anything? How strange.

Ooh, yeah, when you read KotS, a couple of years ago (almost to the day, actually - I totally don't keep a copy of the reviews I've had :twilightblush:), it wasn't listed as being a sequel or prequel to anything.

Whereas Best Pegasus was always set up as the prequel to Haunted Wasteland, which is my longest story and only 2/3 done. There's a 2.5-year gap between BP and HW, though, and I figured that a certain event took place between the two. I wondered about writing a scene of that event, as a bonus chapter or something, and then realised that King of the Stingers was pretty much exactly that scene already, so I tied the older story into the continuity.

BP and KotS don't have any common characters or threads, but they do both serve as prequels to HW.

There's something really special about Derpy and Spitfire having a conversation in the first place, this meeting of the 'high' and the 'low' on equal footing.

Thanks, I completely agree, and that's exactly what I was aiming for

Sorry you got stuck with a more serious story here, as you'd already read all my shorter trollfics! I think this is the only troll-esque one you haven't read (if you happen to ever have another trollfic special), but it's definitely nearly twice as long as Best Pegasus.

Also, Airshipping is Magic and My Harshwhinnial are rightly considered classics, they're both amazing. But this was the first I'd heard of MLP The fate Crash, and it is perfect. I don't think a single word (or spelling) of it could be improved. I mean, it's just...

Everone shook there cheer at the pony and she went bow in "thankyou".

What can I say to that? It's the most beautiful reinvention of the English language. Thank you so much for recommending it here! :pinkiehappy:

Oh, I forgot to updoot, thanks for reminding me. :B

BP and KotS don't have any common characters or threads, but they do both serve as prequels to HW.

Oh, that makes sense. Now I don't have to worry about reading them out of order. Not that I really did...

And I think I actually prefer MLP:FIM CRISIS IN TIMESAPCE when it comes to mariofan's fics.

I would like to remind everyone that I am being paid to read these stories and also [My Harshwhinnial] was asked for specifically. It was the only one asked for specifically. <.<

Icy Shake's got the best kind of brain damage.

I was wondering when you'd get around to my Masterpiece.

Phoenix Dust is probably my favorite stupid thing I have ever written.

It's great! XD

Alsalso

completing it would in fact ruin some of the majesty

You have inspired me to finish My Harshwhinnial.

I hope everyone reads this and appreciates the fuck out of it, for poor Luther's sake. :( RIP

Damn you, that's too perfect. I have finished it the only way I possibly could have: by killing Luther.

And I have topped the consummate incoherence of Chapter 17 the only way I possibly could have: by not even being the one to write the final chapter.

The story is now marked Complete, which I'm pretty sure opens one of the Seven Seals heralding the apocalypse.

May Princesscorn Princess Celestia have mercy on our souls.

The only problem with this story is if you try and imagine it read in a high-pitched Swedish accent; it loses something then.

Loses? Or gains? :duck:

Speaking of readings, I just found out ScarlettBlade's channel was shut down some time ago. D: But he's back, with a new channel and new readings! Which means all the old ones are long gone. :( And there's a whole bunch I never got to listen to...

Yeah, that sucked big time, that's why I always download any and all readings as soon as they pop up on Youtube nowadays. But good news! I've found out recently that the whole channel is archived, surprisingly, over at Pornhub of all places. Credit goes to this comment and user. Alternatively there is an mp3 archive over here:

Enjoy! :pinkiehappy:

Dude, T-T-T-Tia! was one of the first fics I ever reviewed, and my first exposure to Dash, who used to have a different username 6 years ago but I honestly don't remember it. You won't find the review either, sadly, because it was only posted on an old extinct blog I used to be part of called the Las Pegasus Tribune, along with about 30-odd other stories and various author interviews with people such as Dash, GrandMoffPony, and others. I regret not cross posting them to fimfic but I didn't even have an account here back then iirc and then the LPT just collapsed.
edit: turns out I did and my comment is dated from 2013. I was still a noob internet user back then for the most part and I had no idea that webpages could expire :rainbowlaugh:

And yes, it's funny, good for a quick chuckle, but has a fond place in my heart because that's how I met Dash. She's not around much anymore but to be fair, neither am I.

You're right, Dash did have a different nick once upon a time, and I can't remember it either. c.c

Sugar Tonight would have almost worked better as a second-person anon fic.

Now that I've typed that, I thank God that 2012 me didn't do it.

I just wanna know who he was D:

So excited to see this, and there are a bunch of things I'd like to check out (sorry for late response, been kinda busy D: ). A nice side effect is that they're mostly short! :V

5049454
Aw, thanks!

5049700
:pinkiegasp: I was not expecting that! Guess that's top of the list of things to check out.

Boys, boys, no need to worry, your girl Dashie is on the case!

My old starter name was stupid. Dashie_Rising, it was. And damned stupid it was. Much better in the world of Trigun.

It's kinda nuts to pop in randomly and see a conversation about me in a review thread so I wanted to show my appreciation (:

Thanks for the love, Ceru, I fondly remember having you eviscerating my drafts, at least the precious few I decided to have edited rather than shitposted. I miss writing with everyone here but it's just been so looong.. At least I know people can still appreciate the silly goodness I've graced this site with. Miss you guys :rainbowwild:
