Twilight Sparkle is the master of her own mind. She is the Princess of Friendship. She is the fourth piece of the Alicorn Tetrarchy. She has incredible power, and she has always asserted it in a necessary and compassionate way. She has a charmed life—a wonderful set of friends, a beautiful castle in a lovely little town, and is constantly busy with her life, stretching her wings upward and outward to new horizons as often as possible.

There can be nothing wrong with her.

After attempting to recover a significant amount of lost matter in a teleportation mishap, Twilight Sparkle begins to exhibit strange symptoms.

As this goes on, a strange droning emanates from the newly discovered caverns underneath her Crystal Castle.

The worst part is, nopony in the town seems to believe her.

Twilight Sparkle understands that change is essential for life just as well as anypony.

But is it always for the best?

Twilight is awoken one morning by Pinkie Pie, who brings urgent news of a disaster. Knowing Pinkie Pie, Twilight assumes that it's nothing horribly serious, but knows better than to ignore Pinkie when she says something's up.

However, not everything is as it is let on by the boisterous party pony.

Every winter, Applejack heads off into the apple orchard after a heavy snowfall. This year is no different. She can't describe why she does it—to feel the wind chill, to test her endurance, to get some time alone with her thoughts...

One never chooses their fears. Luna soon learns this when she ventures to seek the Door of Nightmares located deep within the Crystal Empire Palace. Believing she's ready to see what lies within her own mind, she takes the tentative journey to the door...

Scootaloo and Rumble head out from town one night, and head north. To the north, there are hills nopony every goes to. They'll be alone, in the dark stretch of land no one bothered to explore.
