It's not so much that I thought it was meant as a joke really. But rape is a very, touchy subject. VERY touchy.[1] It's something I would recommend not using even in a dramatic story, unless you have some SERIOUS writing chops. That and something that serious popping up in a light-hearted comedy about ponies with tree fetishes getting it on while their friends watch is kind of jarring. It's not a deal breaker exactly, just out of place.
Everything else was funny as shit.

Oh, I would never, ever, write a rape scene. I couldn't. I really try to put myself in my characters' heads to write them as well as possible, and that would just be too emotionally scarring for me.
But I do think that the intensity I was trying to convey was only possible through the introduction of that harsh topic. I had pretty much already said 'heat makes mares really want to screw', and I needed to push way past that to get my full point across.
If you like that, you might want to check out my other stories. It's a recurring theme in my fics; the primary focus of 'Pants' (which takes place not long after this) and takes up a good bit of a chapter in 'A Brief Window' (alternate timeline, not really my 'canon').
Oh, for sure. Whereas 'Pants' covers Rainbow's repressed longing for Twilight, my upcoming fic will explore Twilight's poorly hidden obsession with Rainbow. Unexpected sexy-tiems ensue.

I have a big issue with the idea that estrus is so intense that a member of a thinking species can get a rape charge thrown out because of it. One of the hallmarks of a fully sentient individual is the ability to control your base biological functions. Now, it is safe to assume that there are "aids" for a mare in heat, especially if it's intense, and I can certainly see a mare who lost control being put in therapy and counseling, while being placed in a mental hospital instead of prison under the right circumstances, but that wouldn't be throwing the charge out. Especially considering what throwing the charge out would mean for the victim.

My point was that, in extreme cases, the sentience you mention is all but completely lost, the mares will acquire what they want by any means necessary, and they lack the self-control needed not to, in a manner akin to a drug addict going through early stages of withdraw. Just like drug rehabilitation, there are options available to reduce the severity, but it's not always enough. Basically, it's an insanity plea backed up by demonstrably high levels of hormones known to make mares lose control.
The result in the narrative is that Fluttershy appears calm, cool, collected, and kind in comparison, even though she's screaming poor Mac's head off and demanding he rut her.

I'm mostly kidding, of course, but we spent an awful lot of time in that little room with them—watching hot, pervy, arboreal action—and nothing much happened with them. They even shook off the Celestia visit. I suppose all of Dash's character growth is tied up in Pants, and AJ doesn't have a storyline going, but it left things here feeling unresolved.

The reason I put them there in the first place was so that they could help me narrate the story and add in details and jokes that it would be awkward for me to add in as the non-subjective bodiless voice. So the last thing I would want is for them to steal the show from Fluttershy and Big Mac. That's probably why I didn't take them in that direction.
